Calgary Flames Worst Trade: Doug Gilmour Traded To Toronto Maple Leafs

Decided it was time to do another trade retrospect video where at or on the date. I talk about a significant trade in Calgary Flames history. With January 2nd upon us. I felt it was time to talk about what I think was the worst trade that the Calgary Flames made to date. On January 2nd, 1992 which was the time when Doug Gilmour was traded from the Calgary Flames to the Toronto Maple Leafs. I give a back story of Doug Gilmour when he started his NHL career and what he meant to the Calgary Flames including being a big part of the 1989 Stanley Cup team before why this trade happened. This trade did happen at the time when player salaries we're starting to rise and smaller market teams like the Calgary Flames couldn't afford to keep their best players like Doug Gilmour. Doug Gilmour was one of the undisputed leaders from the 1989 Stanley Cup team and did score the cup winning goal in Game 6 against the Montreal Canadiens. Fast forward to two and a half years later where Doug Gilmour was in a contract dispute with the Calgary Flames actually left the team after the New Years Eve game on January 1st, 1992. Fittingly Doug Gimour scored another big goal against the Montreal Canadiens which was the overtime winner before he left the Calgary Flames as he knew he could get more money elsewhere. The whole trade is listed below which at the time was one of the biggest ever in NHL history with 10 players involved and now looking about one of the most lopsided trades as well. Worst Calgary Flames Trade - Doug Gilmour To Toronto Maple Leafs To Toronto Maple Leafs: F Doug Gilmour F Kent Mandeville D Jamie Mackin D Ric Nattress G Rick Walmsley To Calgary Flames: F Gary Leeman F Craig Berube D Alexander Godynyuk D Michel Petit G Jeff Reese The Toronto Maple Leafs instantly got a new hero in Doug Gilmour where he elevated his game as one of the best two way centres of all time. What he showed in St. Louis and Calgary and eventually Toronto made Doug Gilmour a hall of famer and got inducted in 2011. Plus his number 93 got retired with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his first full season with the Toronto Maple Leafs he led the team in scoring including setting franchise records in assists and points in a season that led him to winning the Selke Trophy as best defensive forward and runner up to the Hart Trophy as the leagues most valuable player. Doug Gilmour was also instrumental in leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to back-to-back conference finals in 1993 and 1994 at his peak with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Defenseman Jamie Macoun was also a great player of the defense for the Toronto Maple Leafs that made this trade even more a win for Toronto. The other pieces played a much smaller role but Doug Gilmour being the best player in the trade made it a steal. Calgary Flames really got shafted in this deal when it's all said and done. Gary Leeman who was suppose to be the key piece coming to the Calgary Flames didn't find his scoring ability as the season before he scored over 50 goals. Also had back-to-back 30+ goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Gary Leeman and all the other pieces in the trade didn't last more than 2 or 3 seasons with the Calgary Flames for various reasons as mentioned in the video. While this trade reduced the salaries spent for the Calgary Flames. They didn't get full value in return for what Doug Gilmour provided to the Calgary Flames and what he provided in his NHL career. Toronto Maple Leafs we're familiar with all the assets as Cliff Fletcher who was the general manager worked for the Calgary Flames including building the 1989 Stanley Cup team. Tom Watt the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs before Pat Burns worked with Doug Risebrough and Terry Crisp on the coaching staff during the 1989 Stanley Cup team. Doug Risebrough took over as Calgary Flames general manager and head coach after Cliff Fletcher left for Toronto and Terry Crisp was fired made this trade which I say was the worst trade the Calgary Flames ever made. This started the dismantling from the 1989 Stanley Cup team and the franchise was set back for many years until 2003-04. There was lots to say about this trade but it was big for both teams that needed a shake up and 10 players we're involved in the transaction. What are your thoughts on this trade over 28 years later of this video? Was there a worse trade the Calgary Flames made? You're very welcome Toronto Maple Leafs and Don Cherry had Doug Gilmour as his man crush during that era.
