John Delaney rose to prominence in Ireland during the Saipan Incident, when Roy Keane was sent home from the Republic of Ireland's 2002 FIFA World Cup squad following a bust-up with manager Mick McCarthy. Over the next 20 years, Delaney went on a journey of being heralded as the great moderniser and saviour of Irish football, to being perceived as the architect of its demise.
