This was probably the most painful game of the weekend. It was a defensive game from start to finish and two costly turnovers by the Seahawks helped the Rams win this one. The storyline from this game wasn’t about a single play or single moment. What really stood out to me was the utter and complete collapse of the Seahawks offense. Was it on Russell Wilson? Was the Rams’ defense just that good? What about Brian Schottenheimer? Was his offense just that easy to defend? In this video, I discussed this game and I gave my answers to the following questions. First, the Rams’ defense, with their pass rushers like Aaron Donald and Leonard Floyd and having a guy like Jalen Ramsey really does make them good. They can create pressure from a four-man rush while playing sound technique in coverage. The other thing the Rams’ defense did well was that they game-planned to eliminate the Seahawks’ main formation: Shotgun trips to the field side. This completely eliminated certain players like D.K. Metcalf and on plays when they didn’t bracket cover him, Ramsey would shadow him one-on-one. The final thing I’ll say is that Russell Wilson was also to blame for this loss, but it wasn’t entirely on him. Anybody that says that is 100% wrong. He was given little time, his wide receivers couldn’t separate, his tight ends dropped passes, and he was under pressure on more than 50% of his pass attempts. This is a ridiculous percentage. Without some of his big plays, the Seahawks would have been shut out. Overall, the person I blame the most is Brian Schottenheimer. I think his game plan was awful. No tempo. No half time adjustments. And the constant use of that shotgun trips formation that the Rams completely figured out. It was painful to watch. He never adjusted to what the Rams did and this showed up all over the second half of the season. This video is over 12 minutes long. I hope you (begrudingly) enjoy it! We saw multiple games go back-and-forth and we saw our final game of the weekend end in a crazy fashion finishing in over-time. I’m of course referring to the Bills-Chiefs game that went 42 to 36 in favor of Kansas City. Now normally I wouldn’t waste my time with a 13 second drive that led to a field goal; however, this week is different. This drive was SO terrible for such a good defense that I really needed to talk about it. Honestly, it was one of the dumbest drives I saw all year. The kicker, and sorry for the pun, is that it all happened in a matter of three plays. In this video breakdown, I discussed how the Chiefs so easily drove down the field to set up the game-tying field to send them to overtime against the Buffalo Bills. This was a very important drive that the Buffalo Bills thoroughly screwed up. Over the past couple of weeks, the Seattle Seahawks offense has been near the bottom in the entire NFL. They were shut out against the Green Bay Packers. They only managed 13 points against the Arizona Cardinals even though they made a couple of redzone trips, and while Russell Wilson was out, they only played one consistent offensive game while Geno Smith was the quarterback. That game was against the Jacksonville Jaguars so it’s not exactly impressive. Now we’ve made excuses for their lack of performance so far. We said that since Russell Wilson has been injured, it’s reasonable that they were bad. We also said that sometimes they were just unlucky in terms of drops and non-calls that should have gone their way; however, I think we’re at this point where we just need to say that they just aren’t that good. Their scheme, play-calling, and overall execution has all been lacking. In my latest video breakdown, I looked at Russell Wilson, Shane Waldron’s scheme and play-calling, and how the players are executing in the Seahawks offense. I also made suggestions on how to improve the various aspects of the game planning in order to make this a constructive conversation. When the New England Patriots took on the Cleveland Browns this past weekend, they looked absolutely unstoppable. Their defense shut down any semblance of an offense from the Browns, while Mac Jones and the Patriots offense also looked amazing as well. It was one of the most complete dominations I’ve seen this season. In this video, I wanted to look closely at how Mac Jones played. We’ll look at some examples, talk about his general play, and then to wrap it up we’ll briefly go over what I saw from the Patriots’ defense as well. This video is almost 8 minutes long. In my latest video breakdown, I wanted to look at how the Baltimore Ravens shut down Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers' offense. In this game, Herbert ended up throwing for 5.0 yards per attempt, while his running backs - Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley - ran for a total of 14 yards on 10 carries. This game was a one-sided domination by the Ravens' defense. Through my film study, their use of blitzes, excellent downfield coverage starting with man coverage, then ending in zone, and the amazing play by Patrick Queen, Calais Campbell, and Marlon Humphrey all contributed to this victory. This video is roughly 8 minutes long. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! He made his preseason debut against the Washington Football Team. Spoiler alert: I was REALLY impressed. Mac Jones looked like a veteran the moment he stepped on the field. In this video, I wanted to talk about his performance. We’ll go over a few key plays and some general takeaways I had while going through his film. From my film study, the game plan for the Patriots while Mac Jones was on the field was pretty simple. They gave me some quick game from under center. They gave him a couple of one-on-one deep shots down the field. And they also used play-action to draw the linebackers in before Mac Jones threw a pass over the middle of the defense. Outside of this, I saw a few screens and some other underneath passes. In what promised to be one of the best quarterback duels of the postseason, the Saints-Bucs game in the divisional round of the playoffs was a complete defensive match. Both teams have top tier defenses so this isn’t exactly shocking, but in the modern NFL we have come to expect more from our quarterbacks. Neither Tom Brady nor Drew Brees passed for more than 200 yards in this game. The main storyline I saw from this week was how well the Bucs defense played. They were lights out creating multiple turnovers. Carlton Davis and Sean Murphy-Bunting completely erased Michael Thomas from the field. He ended this match catching 0 passes on his four targets. Now this isn’t a small feat considering that he’s objectively a Top 3 receiver, so in this video, I wanted to focus on how exactly did the Bucs do that. Was it poor throws by Drew Brees? Was it bad routes by Thomas? Or was it just classic good coverage by the defense? In this video I started by looking at his targets first. Then I went over some of my other observations from Michael Thomas' game after tracking all of his routes and the coverages that the Bucs' defense played. For as bad as people think Drew Brees was in this game, Thomas had a pretty bad game too. He barely created any separation on his own. Carlton Davis straight up dominated him all over the field. He was extremely impressive in this one. The thing is that the Saints actually did try to get him the ball. They moved him around a bunch. They sent him on motions. They gave him reduced splits to get easier leverage. They put him in the slot to get match-ups against linebackers and zone droppers. They put on the sides of bunches to give him free releases. And frankly speaking, they pretty much did everything they could but the Bucs simply had his number. On his underneath routes, Davis and the other cornerbacks were patient waiting for his release and any time he ran anything deeper than eight yards down the field, the Bucs were ready and they clamped down on his routes. His backside routes also had no real opportunities either. Just simply put, the Bucs shut him out in this one. Now I do understand that Michael Thomas was injured, but he recently had good performances against the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Atlanta Falcons. To say that the injury was the sole reason why he had a poor performance would be a discredit to the game that Carlton Davis played. After having a franchise quarterback, there’s a strong argument that the second most important position on a team is having an elite shutdown cornerback on defense. Having a cornerback that can singlehandedly eliminate an offense’s main threat is absolutely critical in today’s NFL. When you look around the league, one team that I think has that already is the Green Bay Packers. They have a cornerback by the name of Jaire Alexander. In Alexander’s three short seasons in the NFL, he’s developed into one of the premiere players at this position. His ability to shadow and cover some of the league’s best receivers and eliminate them from the game plan is what makes him extremely valuable. In three back-to-back-to back weeks he did just that. When he was in coverage in week 4, he completely blanketed Calvin Ridley. In Week 6 he took out Mike Evans and in Week 7 he also eliminated Will Fuller as well. He didn’t allow a single reception in those three games when he lined up against those top receivers. Even in his most recent game against the Vikings, he allowed just a single reception for 12 yards against the emerging rookie Justin Jefferson. In this video, I breakdown how exactly he does that. This video is just about 7 minutes. Sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy it!
