Alexandropolis Maedica
Not to be confused with Alexandroupolis, the modern Greek city of ThraceAlexandropolis in the Thracian region of Maedians, was the first town founded in 340 BCE by Alexander the Great, after defeating a local Thracian tribe, as a regent of Macedon. Its name was chosen by analogy with Philippopolis, the town of Thrace founded by Alexander's father, Philip II. He expelled the locals and settled a mixed population.
Alexandroupoli–Svilengrad railway
The Alexandroupoli–Svilengrad railway is a 178.5 km long railway connecting Alexandroupoli in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece with Svilengrad in Bulgaria, via the village of Ormenio. Despite its name, as of 2020 there is only passenger service on the section on Greek territory, between Alexandroupoli and Ormenio, as the international services to Sofia and Istanbul ("Friendship Express") have been suspended as of 2011.
