Rashidun
The Rashidun caliphs , often simply called the Rashidun, are the first four caliphs (lit.: 'successors') who led the Muslim community following the death of the prophet Muhammad: Abu Bakr (r. 632–634), Umar (r. 634–644), Uthman (r. 644–656), and Ali (r. 656–661). The reign of these caliphs, called the Rashidun Caliphate (632–661), is considered in Sunni Islam to have been 'rightly guided' (Arabic: rāshid), meaning that it constitutes a model (sunna) to be followed and emulated from a religious point of view.

As a Salafi scholar who called for the revival of hadith studies and a theoretician of an Islamic state, Riḍā condemned the rising currents of secularism and nationalism across the Islamic world following the abolition of the Ottoman sultanate, and called for a global Islamic Renaissance program to re-establish an Islamic caliphate.As a young hadith student who studied al-Ghazali and ibn Taymiyyah, Riḍā believed reform was necessary to save the Muslim communities, eliminate Sufist practices he considered heretical, and initiate an Islamic renewal.
