Am 13.09.2009 hatten die ETB Wohnbau Baskets dagegen für eine faustdicke Überraschung sorgen können. Nachdem die Essener im Halbfinale noch gegen Paderborn den Kürzeren gezogen hatten, setzte sich das Team von Trainer Igor Krizanovic im Spiel um Platz Drei mit 96:92 nach Verlängerung gegen BBL-Aufsteiger Phönix Hagen durch. Überragend dabei vor allem die beiden US-Amerikaner Keonta Howell und Kellen McCoy, die gemeinsam auf 49 (!) Zähler kamen.
