A volte maledetto – pensate a Moacir Barbosa, passato alla storia come l'unico responsabile del Maracanazo – a volte pittoresco, estroso, fuori dagli schemi. “Per fare il portiere bisogna essere un po' matti”, si dice, o quantomeno non soffrire troppo il peso della solitudine. C'è anche una poesia di Umberto Saba, si intitola “Goal”, la descrizione di un gol dal punto di vista dei due portieri: quello che l'ha subito è disperato, distrutto, “contro terra cela la faccia a non vedere l'amara luce”. L'altro esulta sì, ma da lontano, cerca invano di imbucarsi alla festa degli altri: “La sua gioia si fa una capriola/si fa baci che manda di lontano/della festa – egli dice – anch'io son parte”. In Russia, invece, è tutto diverso: in Russia il portiere è un eroe nazionale, letteralmente “l'estremo difensore”, il capitano morale, l'esempio da portare ai bambini. Ladifesa della porta si sovrappone alla difesa della Patria: sarà retorico?, sì, lo è, ma ovunque il calcio è retorica, spirito di squadra, senso di appartenenza. Se da noi il portiere è un escluso, in Russia il portiere include tutti gli altri, tutto il popolo. C'è un articolo del 2006 del Guardian, scritto dal grande Jonathan Wilson, che s'intitola: “Perché tutti i russi vogliono essere portieri?”. La risposta sta in un nome, poi in un secondo nome patronimico, infine in un cognome: Lev Ivanovic Jascin. Il giovane Lev Jascin abbraccia davvero la vocazione del portiere ben oltre i vent'anni. Fino al 1949 non va oltre la squadra B della Dinamo Mosca. È stato notato da Arkady Chernyshov, allenatore delle giovanili della Dinamo, la squadra del Ministero dell'Interno, dove però tra i pali vige la logica del posto fisso: una delle poche tracce di proprietà privata nell'Unione Sovietica, proprietà di Aleksei Khomich, “la Tigre”. Khomich era il biglietto da visita della prima squadra di calcio sovietica che abbia messo il naso oltre-cortina dopo la guerra: nel novembre del 1945 la Dinamo si è esibita in alcune amichevoli a scopo puramente promozionale in Inghilterra, contro il Chelsea e il Tottenham, e lui ha rubato la scena. Una leggenda vivente. Ti puoi affacciare in campo solo nelle rare volte in cui Khomich è infortunato, o casomai per un'amichevole: come quella contro il Traktor Stalingrado, primavera del 1949, il debutto di Lev Jascin in prima squadra. Un debutto da sogno, un debutto da incubo: a un certo punto, sul rinvio del portiere avversario, prolungato dal vento, fa per andare in presa alta ma si scontra con un difensore e la palla finisce in rete, tra le risate generali. Seconda chance: 2 luglio 1950, derby sentitissimo tra Dinamo e Spartak, Khomich si fa male e dalla panchina l'allenatore Dubinin ordina a Jascin di entrare in campo. I suoi sono avanti 1-0, mancano pochi minuti alla fine, ma arriva un'altra uscita a vuoto. Leggenda vuole che dopo la partita un dirigente della Dinamo faccia irruzione in spogliatoio con parole piuttosto nette: “Sbattete questo cretino fuori dalla squadra”. Terza chance, quattro giorni dopo, 6 luglio 1950: e questa finalmente la vince, sì, ma la vince 5-4, perché il giovane Jascin ha preso 4 gol dalla Dinamo Tbilisi. Ok ragazzo, gli dice l'allenatore, sarà per un'altra volta. Come da manuale del giovane calciatore anni Quaranta e Cinquanta, Lev Jascin ha avuto un'infanzia difficile. Sua madre è morta di tubercolosi quando lui aveva sei anni. Poi, a undici anni, è arrivata la guerra: insieme a suo padre Ivan è stato evacuato da Mosca nell'ottobre 1941, trovando riparo a Ulyanovsk, 900 chilometri più a Est. Poi è tornato a casa e ha subito iniziato a lavorare nell'industria bellica a Tuscino, periferia Nord di Mosca. Non avendo ancora l'età per venire trascinato al fronte, fa l'aggiustatore: insieme a suo padre ripara componenti per aerei. Si alza alle cinque del mattino e torna a casa ben oltre il tramonto, spesso dopo una partita di calcio: lo sport è l'unica valvola di sfogo per gli operai, sottoposti a turni massacranti. Uno di loro, l'ex atleta Vladimir Cecerov, s'inventa una squadra di calcio aziendale, che nei mesi invernali cambia attrezzatura ed equipaggiamento e diventa di hockey su ghiaccio.
