It's an easy question to ask, and a really hard one to answer. Is Russell Westbrook playing well for the Lakers this season? Ask 100 Lakers fans and you'll get 100 different answers, in part because even before the trade that brought Westbrook to Los Angeles, even before his genuinely disastrous first season in a Lakers uniform, Westbrook already was already a polarizing figure in the NBA community. Like Kobe, Westbrook for many is an avatar for larger conversations about how basketball should be played, and what ought to be valued. He's often been at the center of the divide between "old school" and "new school" analysts, or folks who just kinda don't like the guy and find him abrasive. So there's no question he's not worth $47 million. There's no question the trade was a horrible idea, and could haunt the Lakers for years. But none of that is really related to answering the question of how well Westbrook is playing. For starters, well compared to who? Compared to what? What's the right measuring stick? Is it stars? Is it other bench players? And while many of his numbers (turnovers, true shooting percentage) are alarming, other metrics (net rating, particularly as the season has gone on) indicate he's having a positive impact when he plays. And then there's the question of trades. Will the Lakers be able to pull the trigger? Is there even a trigger to pull? And how does the fact the Lakers may be stuck with Westbrook influence people's opinions of how well he's playing? There's much to unpack. Plus, more second half predictions! How many games for LeBron over the final 41? For A.D.? Do the Lakers make a trade? Will Russ be involved? Do the Lakers make the playoffs? If so, what seed? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Setting the table: Answering the question about Westbrook's play requires a defining of terms. SEGMENT 2: So in context, is Westbrook playing well? SEGMENT 3: How the Westbrook trade market impacts feelings about him, plus playoff predictions! The Lakers needed a win in Charlotte to finish out the road trip, and they got it. 121-115 over the (very, very bad) Hornets, behind ...
The Lakers had a busy weekend. LeBron James celebrated his 38th birthday in Atlanta by burying the Hawks in an avalanche of high end, classic James performance. 47 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, on 18-27 from the floor. LeBron, who had a slow-by-his-standards start to the season, is now putting up numbers eerily similar to his career stats. He is, in short, balling at a very high level, particularly over the last 10 games. But can he continue at that level in a January where the Lakers need to start making moves in the Western Conference to insert themselves back into the playoff race out West? Particularly when, as we learned before the game, Anthony Davis is still a giant question mark. Davis spoke to the media in Atlanta, and broke down his breakdown. There's a stress injury in the foot and a bone spur in the ankle. The pain is starting to dissipate, but hasn't gone away completely. He wasn't willing/able to put any sort of timetable on a return to play. It seems unlikely anyone will let him near the court until the pain is gone, at which point there needs to be a ramp up with checkpoints to make sure the problem doesn't recur. That's not going to happen in, like, a week. What will things look like for the Lakers at the end of January, after they survived (or survived, enough) a challenging December (one filled with squandered chances, for what it's worth)? Finally, LeBron may be pouring it on right now, but there are signs that a little more help would be welcome and necessary. The clues come in the percentage of his buckets generated from an assist. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis explains it all... but what do we really know? SEGMENT 2: Can the Lakers survive another month, one with more home games, but that needs to bring a lot more wins? SEGMENT 3: LeBron is doing incredible stuff, but the numbers indicate more help helps. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
