"Es läuft zwar sehr gut im Training, aber letztendlich wissen wir noch nicht, wo wir stehen. Es ist extrem wichtig, jetzt diese Wettkampfsituation zu bekommen", sagte Gislason vor der Partie und kündigte an, viel auszuprobieren. Gleich mit der Startformation setzte der Isländer ein Zeichen. Sebastian Heymann statt Julius Kühn, Luca Witzke statt Philipp Weber und Djibril M'Bengue statt Kai Häfner: Gleich drei der neun Turnier-Debütanten bot Gislason von Beginn an auf und ließ die arrivierten Kräfte eine Halbzeit lang auf der Bank. Das neu formierte Team machte es zunächst gut und führte schnell mit 6:3 (10.), doch vor allem in der Abwehr offenbarte es einige Defizite. Die Absprache im Mittelblock klappte nicht, und auch vorne fehlte es an Durchschlagskraft. Vor der Pause war es vor allem Keeper Andreas Wolff zu verdanken, dass die deutsche Mannschaft trotz fast sechs Minuten ohne eigenen Treffer nie in Rückstand geriet. "Ich glaube, dass wir noch ein bisschen zulegen können. Vor allem in der Abwehr sind wir noch nicht da, wo wir hin wollen", sagte Oliver Roggisch zur Pause in der ARD und forderte "mehr Emotionen" und ein "besseres Umschaltspiel". Im zweiten Durchgang brachte Gislason im Rückraum dann seine Routiniers - und das deutsche Team wirkte nun konzentrierter. Auch weil der nun eingewechselte Till Klimpke wie Wolff einige Paraden zeigte, setzte sich das DHB-Team schnell auf 22:17 ab (39.) und konnte die Führung bis zum Abfiff verteidigen.
