Stage 19 will see the riders leave the Po Valley behind and head deep into the Italian Alps for the penultimate mountain stage of this year’s race. The fifth and final act of the 2021 Giro d’Italia starts here, with a leg-breaking summit finish on the unknown Alpe di Mera. For the protagonist, Egan Bernal, this stage is all about avoiding catastrophe and ensuring that this three-week play ends with pink resolution. Giro d'Italia Stage 16 Highlights
The Queen stage of this year’s race falls the day before the final rest day - a cruel ploy from the organisers to wear down the GC contenders and ensure that none of them enter the third week with a fresh pair of legs. Due to extreme weather conditions the 212km slog from Sacile to Cortina d’Ampezzo that was due to feature almost 6,000m of climbing and three legendary mountain passes had to be shortened to 153km. The Passo Fedaia (14km at 7.5%) and the Passo Pordoi (11.8km at 6.6%) were removed, leaving the Passo Giau (9.8km at 9.3%) as today's major climb. This stage is going to make or break a lot of riders. Whoever ends the day in pink will take a massive leap, both physically and mentally, towards the overall title. The GC contenders will then be afforded some respite on stage 15, the first of the race’s two forays outside of Italy. The 147km-long stage from Grado to Gorizia is largely made up of three laps around a hilly circuit that takes the riders in and out of neighbouring Slovenia. There’s something for everyone on this circuit and we could see anyone, from a sprinter to a climber, emerge victorious in Gorizia. Giro d'Italia Stage 14 Highlights - 27% Gradients On The Monte Zoncolan!
From the easiest stage of this year’s race to one of the hardest, the riders will head deep into the Dolomites to tackle the mighty Monte Zoncolan on stage 14. This mythical climb will fall at the end of a 205km-long stage that features two more categorised climbs - the Castello di Caneva and Forcella Monte Rest. Both of these early climbs pale in comparison to the Zoncolan, one of Italy’s most feared mountain passes. The riders will approach the climb from the Sutrio side this year, rather than from Ovaro as they’ve often done in the past. The climb is still a brute however, averaging 8.5% for 14.1 grueling kilometres. The last 3km are the most excruciating and where the infamous 27% ramps rear their ugly heads. This is the stage that will separate the contenders from the pretenders and really highlight the select few who could go on to win this year’s race.
