Everton were somehow left empty-handed after a dominant performance ended in a 1-0 defeat to Fulham at Goodison Park in the opening game of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. The Blues controlled proceedings throughout the opening period but were unable to find a way past an on-form Bernd Leno in the Fulham goal. The visitors struck the decisive blow 17 minutes from the end, when substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid turned in Andreas Pereira's low cross from close range. Everton, who registered nine of their 19 shots on target to Fulham's two from nine efforts, continued to play on the front foot after the setback but were ultimately unable to find a way through a stubborn Cottagers' defence. A desperately unlucky Conor Coady own goal and injury-time penalty was the difference as Everton were edged 3-1 by Manchester United in the FA Cup third round despite a spirited and encouraging display at Old Trafford. Frank Lampard’s resolute Blues responded to an early opener from Antony to level on 14 minutes when Coady made the most of a David De Gea error to finish from close range. But the England international could do little about the hosts’ second shortly after half-time as he turned in Marcus Rashford’s low cross. Everton never gave up against a strong and in-form United team, however, being denied a Dominic Calvert-Lewin equaliser 17 minutes time when Demarai Gray was ruled offside by inches in the build-up to the striker’s close-range finish. United then ensured their progress with virtually the last kick of the game, Rashford scoring from the penalty spot after Ben Godfrey brought down Alejandro Garnacho. A performance full of promise was soured, though, following an injury to Alex Iwobi early into the second half which saw the Nigerian taken off on a stretcher. Alex Iwobi gave Everton a dream start but the Blues’ unbeaten run came to an end after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Goodison Park. Buoyed by two straight Premier League victories and without tasting defeat in seven matches in all competitions, Frank Lampard’s men looked to be on their way to more success when Iwobi stroked home a sweet 25-yard finish past David de Gea with just five minutes on the clock. That proved to be the peak moment, however, with Everton the makers of their own downfall as mistakes in possession enabled Anthony to level on 14 minutes before substitute Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 700th club goal just before the break. The Toffees were much improved in the second half – with the welcome return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin off the bench – but they could not find a leveller despite a spirited response.
