Este jogo foi marcado pelo trágico acidente no varandim de Alvalade que vitimou dois jovens ultras, Zé e Paulo. Incompreensivelmente o jogo foi realizado e o Porto festejou o título nacional graças ao golo apontado por Domingos Paciência na marcação de uma grande penalidade. O FC Porto foi o campeão nacional, com 7 pontos de avanço sobre o Sporting. O FC Porto regressou ao estatuto de campeão nacional, 2 anos depois, muito graças a um domínio total, tomando as rédeas da liderança desde do início e, com alguma facilidade, foi-se limitando a gerir distâncias sobre os seus rivais. A única derrota em 34 jogos dos "azuis e brancos" demonstra o grande poderio dos novos campeões nacionais. O Sporting, depois de uma época 1993/1994 frustrante, foi o único clube capaz de dar alguma luta ao FC Porto, apesar de, nunca ter, de facto, ameaçado o domínio dos portistas. Apesar disso, o 2.º lugar pode-se considerar como positivo, visto que, desde 1984/1985, que os leões ficaram, sempre, do 3.º lugar para baixo. O Benfica foi a grande desilusão da época. Após o título de 1993/1994, as águias, com o novo presidente Manuel Damásio, decidiram despedir o treinador campeão Toni, e, no seu lugar, contratar Artur Jorge. O novo técnico operou uma "revolução" no plantel campeão, mudando, quase, na totalidade com os jogadores campeões do ano anterior. Esta revolução, nada de bom trouxe, visto que, o Benfica, desde cedo, se afastou do título e, sofreu, para garantir o 3.º lugar, lugar mais baixo desde 1984/1985. O Vitória de Guimarães, depois de 3 épocas afastados das competições europeias, voltou a conquistar em tais competições, muito graças a um fantástico 4.º lugar, chegando, inclusivamente, a ameaçar o 3.º lugar do Benfica. Com um futebol vistoso e ofensivo, os vitorianos, regressaram aos patamares mais alto da tabela. Por fim, destacar o espetacular 5.º lugar do Farense, melhor classificação de sempre do clube algarvio, o que, permitiu aos algarvios participar, pela primeira vez, nas competições europeias. Essa edição da Primeira Divisão foi a última à adotar o sistema onde que o vencedor da partida ganhasse 2 pontos ao invés de 3 pontos, conforme recomendado pela FIFA.

Slavia Prague inflicted Rangers' first defeat at Ibrox in just over a year to knock the nine-man Scottish champions out of the Europa League. Peter Olayinka's first-half header gave the Czech champions the lead following a 1-1 draw in Prague, and Nicolae Stanciu doubled the advantage after Leon Balogun was shown a second yellow. Rangers were already down to 10 by then, Kemar Roofe having been sent off within six minutes of coming on for catching goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar in the face with his boot. There was still time for further tumult in the closing minutes. A strong challenge by Connor Goldson precipitated a melee, and Ondrej Kudela uttered something to Glen Kamara while covering his mouth with a hand. That enraged Rangers' players, with Kamara, Goldson and Bongani Zungu particularly incensed, and manager Steven Gerrard confirmed afterwards that Kamara told him he was racially abused, with other players also having heard the comments. While Rangers will feel they could have shown more of themselves over the two legs of this last-16 tie, Slavia proved themselves the more accomplished side as they backed up their win over Leicester City in the previous round. Having been rocked in the opening 45 minutes of the first leg - which came just four days after their Scottish Premiership title win - Rangers improved in the second half in Prague and carried that in to the opening exchanges at Ibrox. However, it was the visitors who struck the away goal they craved after 14 minutes as their captain Jan Boril took advantage of the space afforded to him on the left to whip a cross to the near post, which Olayinka headed down and into the net. Despite good long-range attempts by Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, Rangers were largely kept at arm's length and Balogun was fortunate not to give away a penalty right before half-time after he gifted away possession to the impressive Abdallah Sima. It was symptomatic of the centre-back's sloppy display, and Gerrard will wonder if the result might have been any different had the composed Filip Helander not had a groin niggle and been fit enough to start. As it was, both sides continued to play with intent but little composure in the opposition half as possession was regularly traded, and in the end the fate of the tie swung on the red cards. Roofe was clearly just trying to win the ball, but his foot was so high as to be reckless, and Kolar's injury looked serious. The goalkeeper had to be replaced, but he returned to the bench for the closing moments after receiving treatment. Rangers actually improved after the first sending off, keeping the ball far better, but Balogun's rash challenge added to their strife, and Stanciu's second stunning intervention of the tie ended things with 15 minutes left. This was Rangers first defeat in the Europa League this season, but unfortunately it came at a critical time. For the second season in a row, they have proved themselves an impressive side at this level, but have fallen at the last-16 stage again. While last term they came up against a Bayer Leverkusen side who were clearly a class above, the frustration will be that Slavia - while a very well-coached team with plenty of talent - were beatable. Despite a strong start, Rangers never got going with the two changes to the team from the first leg not paying off. Scott Arfield could not get across fast enough to shut down the cross for the opener and was careless in possession, while Balogun had a night to forget. Overall, there are plenty of positives for Gerrard to take from this campaign. But he will also have plenty to ponder as they enter the Champions League third qualifying round in July, where they will have to overcome opponents such as Slavia if they are to reach the group stage. O FC Porto era um dos grandes candidatos ao título, se não o maior, pois vinha duma vitória no campeonato passado. O Benfica era o clube com mais dificuldades financeiras e seus jogadores queriam sair para outro clube. Ora esse clube era o arquirrival Sporting que, apesar de já não ganhar há 11 anos, estava com vontade de ganhar títulos, e nada melhor do que as duas contratações sonantes de Paulo Pousa e Pacheco, dois jogadores do Benfica que faziam vibrar os sócios e os adeptos leoninos. Então iniciou o campeonato e o Benfica começava mal, enquanto Porto e Sporting adiantavam-se. As jornadas passavam e os sportinguistas começavam acreditar seriamente na tão desejada conquista do título, mas a chegada do Natal foi fatal - o Sporting perde a eliminatória da taça UEFA ao Casino de Salzburgo e Bobby Robson treinador do Sporting é demitido (curioso o facto do Sporting estar no 1º lugar naquela altura). No seu lugar foi posto o treinador que tinha feito maravilhas ao serviço das camadas jovens da Selecção Nacional, dos quais muitos desses miúdos estavam agora no Sporting. Carlos Queirós era o seu nome. O Sporting atingiu níveis altíssimos e a 3 jornadas do fim estava a 1 ponto do Benfica, que conseguiu recuperar a sua má fase inicial. Então, à 30ª Jornada estava marcado o derby de Lisboa: Sporting vs Benfica, o maior derby de Portugal. Lisboa parou para ver o jogo onde o Sporting era o grande favorito pois jogava em casa e estava a jogar melhor que o Benfica. Começa o jogo, o Sporting começa "à leão" e logo aos 8 minutos Cadete marca de canto, fazia-se a festa, mas aos 30 minutos João Vieira Pinto finta dois homens do Sporting, faz um grande remate e golo do Benfica, estava feito o empate. Volvidos 5 minutos marcava golo Figo, 2-1 para o Sporting, mas outra vez João Pinto finta dois homens, desta vez à entrada da área, remata e marca golo 2-2. João Pinto outra vez marca golo, desta vez Isaías cabeceia para João Pinto e este também de cabeça marca o golo, 2-3 para o Benfica, isto aos 44 minutos da 1ª parte. Começa a 2ª parte e o Sporting tenta a todo o custo empatar mas Isaías marcava golo com assistência de Paneira, 2-4. O pesadelo começa em Alvalade e Isaías marca outro golo como assistência de João Pinto, 2-5. Começavam os sportinguistas a abandonar Alvalade mas ainda o Benfica marcou o 6º por Hélder. O Sporting ainda reduziu por penalti, marcou Balakov, 3-6. Final dum Jogo histórico e a atribuir o título ao Benfica que só se confirmaria com nova derrota do Sporting por 3-0 ao Marítimo no Funchal e a confirmação com vitória por 3-0 sobre o Gil Vicente.
