Bukayo Saka struck the first after Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu were involved in the build up, before Martin Odegaard doubled our lead after more one-touch wizardry from Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah both hit the post and Wolves ensured a tense finale when they pulled one back through Matheus Cunha, but we held on to complete an excellent week. Coming into the game on a real high after last weekendâs late win over Brentford, and the dismantling of Lens in midweek, we started as you might expect - with a spring in our step. The game was just six minutes old when we took the lead. Saka started and finished the move, with some wonderful work on the right flank. Faced up by two defenders, he fed a pass through to Jesus, who in turn laid it off for Tomiyasu outside the box. Meanwhile Saka had continued his run into the danger area, received Tomiyasuâs first time pass, beat his man before sliding home right-footed. On Wednesday our early goal opened the floodgates against Lens, and we threatened to do the same here when we added a second seven minutes later. It was another excellent move to carve out the second goal, this time on the left flank. Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus and played a quick one-two to get behind the Wolves defence, and the Ukrainian pulled his pass back to where Odegaard crisply found the net with a first-time shot low into the corner. It was a rampant start by Mikel Artetaâs team, and Leandro Trossard was next to go close. He just about got a toe to Odegaardâs clipped throughball, but he shot was smothered by Jose Sa in the Wolves goal. It was Saâs last involvement, as he had to go off injured, to be replaced by Dan Bentley midway through the half. From our position of strength, we continued playing with plenty of aggressive and attacking purpose. Trossard had a shot blocked in the box and Rice saw an effort deflected wide as we racked up the shot count. Gabriel Martinelli was denied a wonderful goal by the upright, after Saka found him at the end of a counter-attack. Just moments earlier he had ran back the length of the pitch to stop a promising Wolves attack. During the seven minutes injury-time at the end of the first half, Gabriel Jesus shot tamely at Bentley when free in the box, and Trossard scuffed a shot wide after yet more geometric artistry in the build up. The last act of the opening 45 minutes though was David Raya â a virtual spectator so far â standing firm to deny Hwang Hee-Chan when he suddenly picked up possession on the edge of the box. At the start of the second-half we had a penalty appeal turned down, when Max Kilman appeared to have hold of Jesus, preventing him from getting on the end of a Tomiyasu whipped cross. Despite a VAR review though, the refereeâs decision not to award the spot kick stood. The pace of the game had dropped though, and Wolves sensed a way back in. Matheus Cunha drew a smart save from Raya at the near post, and we responded with another long spell of possession. But the build-up play was patient rather than explosive. Rice dragged a shot wide and Saka saw a dipping effort from 20 yards fly over before Trossard had a real chance for the third. A wonderful flick by Odegaard set him through on goal, but Bentley was out well to deny the Belgian, and then save from Sakaâs follow up shot. Without that third goal, Wolves were always alive, and they capitalised on some sloppy defensive play to pull one back. Zinchenko and Rice failed to clear the ball inside the box, and Cunha thrashed home superbly, with five minutes of the 90 left. Eddie Nketiah so nearly restored the two-goal cushion instantly. Again Odegaard was the creator, this time Nketiah slid the ball past the keeper, but his shot hit the inside of the post and bounced away to safety. Wolves piled more pressure on in injury-time, but we stood firm to record three more Premier League points. #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Gabriel Jesus, Alex Zinchenko, Leah Williamson, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White and more.
We qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League with a convincing, confident, classy 6-0 win at home to RC Lens on Wednesday night. Kai Havertz got his second goal in as many games to give us an early lead, before Gabriel Jesus made it two, Bukayo Saka got a third, and Gabriel Martinelli then got his name on the scoresheet with 28 minutes played in a dominant first-half display. Martin Odegaard scored for 5-0 on the brink of half-time, and Jorginho became our sixth different goalscorer of the night from the penalty spot late on. It took just seven minutes for us to have our first sight of goal as Oleksandr Zinchenko crossed for Jesus, who could only cushion the ball into the side netting past the near post. Five minutes later, Saka found Takehiro Tomiyasu overlapping on the right wing. He delivered a cross for Havertz who headed the ball back across goal and just wide of the post. Then we took the lead, Tomiyasuâs cross not cleared and Jesus heading the ball into the path of Havertz, who simply tucked it past the onrushing Brice Samba for 1-0. Jesus was the man who slotted home into the bottom left corner for our second goal of the night, but it wouldnât have happened without the lung-busting run of Saka, wriggling his way through the middle of the pitch exactly five years on from his senior debut before laying it off for our Brazilian forward. âWeâve got super Mik Artetaâ rung around Emirates Stadium, inviting a third from our glorious Gunners, and Saka duly obliged. Martinelli cut in from the left and his shot was pushed kindly into Sakaâs path, and he simply couldnât miss. In the 27th minute, Martinelli drifted in from the left wing again and curled the ball into the far corner on his right foot as we went 4-0 up inside the first half-hour - a ruthless performance. Elye Wahi forced a save from David Raya from a narrow angle at the other end for Lensâ first real chance of the game in the 37th minute, before Facundo Madina smashed the post from distance. Angelo Fulgini then struck straight into Rayaâs gloves. Martinelli hit the side netting with half-time approaching before Odegaard got in on the act, volleying into the bottom right corner from Tomiyasuâs cross after our full-back had flown past Saka again on the overlap. Tomiyasu was replaced by Ben White at half-time while Zinchenko made way for Jakub Kiwior. We made another change with 25 minutes to go as Reiss Nelson came on for Saka. Unsurprisingly, the second half was nowhere near as eventful and it took until the 67th minute for the first notable chance, Havertz performing some excellent trickery by the corner flag and pulling it back for Odegaard, whose deflected shot was spilled before Lens cleared the danger. Jorginho came on for Declan Rice, who had looked typically comfortable on the ball throughout, with 15 minutes remaining. White headed over from an Odegaard corner before Eddie Nketiah became our final substitution of then game when he came on for Jesus with eight minutes to go. With five minutes remaining, we were awarded a penalty, courtesy of a VAR check, due to a handball from Abdukodir Lhusanov. Odegaard gave it to Jorginho, who calmly slotted into the bottom right for 6-0. Weâre back in Premier League action this weekend with a trip to Brentford following the international break. Take a look at how our lads got on in the latest session at London Colney as we get ready to face the Bees. Weâll be looking to pick up where we left off after a 3-1 win against Burnley that left us third in the Premier League prior to the international break. Thomas Frankâs side will be hoping to show a response to their 3-0 loss at Liverpool in early November. Leandro Trossard scored our 1,000th goal at Emirates Stadium, before William Saliba and Alex Zinchenko added second-half to earn all three points against Burnley. Trossard went in bravely at the far post to break the deadlock at the end of the first half, and although the visitors briefly drew level through a deflected Josh Brownhill effort, we deservedly wrapped up the points thanks to our prowess at set-pieces. Saliba headed home Trossardâs corner, before Zinchenko acrobatically scored our third, when another dangerous corner wasnât fully cleared. We finished the game with ten men after Fabio Vieira was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Brownhill, but we saw out time comfortably to extend our unbeaten home run and move up to second place. After a moving rendition of The Last Post, and reading of Ode of Remembrance, we got play under way on a sunny, autumnal afternoon in north London. Gabriel headed over a corner early on, but the first effort on target came from the hosts â Zeki Amdouniâs long range effort was turned behind by David Raya. We first made James Trafford work when Bukayo Saka was alive to a loose ball in the box, and lashed a right-footed shot first time towards the top corner, but the young Burnley keeper pushed the shot onto the bar and away. We were beginning to warm to our task, and create more chances. The twinkle-toed Alex Zinchenko set up Saka inside the area and his low cross was scrambled away, before Saka was penalised for a shove in the box when Jordan Beyerâs header looked to be lopping into his own goal. Burnley were soaking up the pressure, but served warning of their goal threat when Johann Gudmundsson drew a good low save from Raya when he broke through centrally. Trossard was next to try his luck for us. Declan Rice snapped into a challenge in midfield to win the ball and release Kai Havertz. He found the Belgian on the edge of the box, and his dipping effort was tipped over. As the seconds ticked away to half-time, we finally made the breakthrough. Saka won another dangerous cross into the box from Zinchenko, and headed towards Trossard at the far post. The Belgian kept his eye on the ball despite being challenged by Trafford, to nod home from close range. As he received treatment on the floor, the Emirates faithful celebrated the 1,000th goal weâve scored at the stadium since moving here in 2006. More significantly, it put us ahead after a patient first-half performance. But the lead was erased early in the second half. The lively Luca Koleosho got the better of Takehiro Tomiyasu on the left, caused confusion with his cross, and Josh Brownhill saw his shot beat Raya with the aid of a deflection from Gabriel. We responded instantly. Gabriel Martinelli streaked away on the left and fired his shot at Trafford at the near post. From the resulting corner from Trossard, Saliba got in front of the keeper to thud home a header at close range. Rice fired just wide from 25 yards before we finally secured a two-goal cushion. Trossardâs corners had been coughing problems all afternoon, and another delivered into a dangerous area bounced against the bar off a Burnley defender, before falling to Zinchenko, who improvised brilliantly to volley into the top corner. It was a lovely finish. Just like Salibaâs, it was the Ukrainianâs first goal at the Emirates. It gave us some breathing room, but our task was made more difficult again when substitute Vieira was sent off for a studs high challenge on Brownhill. Down to ten men, we had more defending to do in the closing stages, but we saw out the remaining ten minutes or so with little cause for alarm, and in fact finished with nine, when Jorginho was taken off with a head injury deep into stoppage time.
