This was the first match up between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs since Babe Ruth pitched for the Red Sox who defeated the Cubs 4 games to 2 in the 1918 World Series. It was the first ever Cubs-Red Sox game to be played at Wrigley Field. This was due to the Chicago home games being played at Comiskey Park in the 1918 World Series, which had a greater seating capacity than the Cubs' Weeghman Park. Between the 1918 World Series and 2005, both the Cubs and Red Sox endured an endless saga of countless heartbreaking defeats with very little to celebrate. While the Red Sox had just ended their 86-year World Series Championship drought by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 0 in 2004, the Cubs were still suffering through 96 full seasons since their last World Series Championship over the Detroit Tigers 4 games to 1 in the year 1908. It was a drought that would continue through the 2005 season, and through the next ten seasons in 2015, before it finally ended after 108 years in 2016 with a 4 games to 3 victory over the Cleveland Indians. While the Cubs would go on to win the World Series 11 years later in 2016, the Red Sox followed their 2004 championship with two more in 2007 (4-0 over Rockies), and in 2013 (4-2 over Cardinals). This game is most likely considered to be the signature game for the Chicago Cubs from their 2008 Division Championship season. The Cubs entered this game against the Colorado Rockies a game and a half up on the second place St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs were riding a 4-game winning streak, and were attempting to remain perfect in the fifth game of a seven-game home stand. Cubs southpaw Ted Lilly took the mound after a 20-minute rain delay, and proceeded to give up a total of 7 runs on 8 hits. Only 4 of the 7 runs were earned and Lilly also allowed 2 home runs, which cut his day short after only 3 innings pitched. After the Rockies tacked on another run in the 4th, they led by a score of 8-0. The Cubs manufactured a run in the bottom of the 4th, only to give it right back to the Rockies in the top of the 5th, making it a score of Rockies-9, Cubs-1 midway through the 5th. After the Cubs failed to score in the 5th and still down by 8 runs, Cubs manager Lou Piniella had seemingly given up hope on the chances of a comeback victory. Piniella replaced all-star first baseman Derrek Lee with the rookie first baseman / corner outfielder Micah Hoffpauir, and replaced rookie catcher Geovany Soto with the veteran backup catcher Henry Blanco. With the score still 9-1 in the bottom of the 6th, Micah Hoffpauir led off with a ground-rule double to left-center field. First year Cubs outfielder Kosuke Fukudome followed Hoffpauir's double with a home run, making the score 9-3. Jim Edmonds made it back-to-back home runs by planting a shot into the center field juniper bushes in front of the batter's eye. Mark DeRosa, Ronny Cedeno, and Jon Lieber were then retired in order to end the inning with a score of Rockies-9, Cubs-4. Cubs pitchers Jon Lieber and Scott Eyre kept the Rockies at 9 runs heading into the 7th inning stretch, led by Blackhawks legends Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, and Tony Esposito. In the Cubs half of the 7th, Soto's replacement Henry Blanco hit a 2-run home run to make the score 9-6. Micah Hoffpauir and Kosuke Fukudome proceeded with back-to-back singles, then Jim Edmonds drove them in on a double to the right-center field alley to make the score 9-8. Mark DeRosa was due up next as the potential go-ahead run. DeRosa worked a full count on Rockies pitcher Manny Corpas, then delivered on the sixth pitch by looping a Corpas breaking ball into the left-center field bleachers, giving the Cubs a 10-9 lead. Cubs pitcher Carlos Marmol was brought in to hold the 10-9 lead, and he struck out the side in order, with all three Rockies batters striking out looking. In the 9th inning, Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood was summoned to save the 10-9 lead. Wood walked Ryan Spilborghs, pitched Garrett Atkins into a line-out double play, and pitched Todd Helton into a game-ending fly out to right field, thus completing the 8-run comeback for a Cubs win by a score of 10-9.
