Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo wants more home wins in 2019
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo wants more home wins in 2019

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo wants more home wins in 2019. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo wants Wolves to build on a memorable win over Spurs by improving their home form. Nuno's men produced a superb display to win 3-1 at Wembley on Saturday - and will bid to follow it up when Crystal Palace visit Molineux on Wednesday night. Wolves' win over Tottenham lifted them to seventh but Nuno is aware that, while his team have the sixth-best record in the top flight on their travels, they have only won four of their 10 home fixtures. "We were able to achieve a fantastic victory (at Spurs) but the home factor of the competition is very important," said Nuno. "We must improve at home. "The schedule is so tight that anything can happen. We have to be ready and prepare ourselves for Wednesday." Wolves are not far behind sixth-placed Manchester United but, when asked what his team could achieve over the remainder of the season, their manager was focused on the short term. "We can achieve a good training session, knowing that Palace is Wednesday," he said. "Every game, the approach is the same. The opponent does not mean anything regarding our approach. "We have to go game by game. All the opponents, we take the same care and try to do the same things." Helder Costa and Joao Moutinho made a big impact off the bench at Tottenham - and Nuno is pleased with the way his squad is coping with the intense festive schedule. "We have a short squad and we have to manage," he said. "But managing the squad and getting everybody involved is the best thing a manager can have." He fired home past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 58th minute to seal a 1-0 win for Leicester against Everton on New Year's Day. As he wheeled away to celebrate the first goal of 2019, he showed off his gymnastic prowess with a cartwheel and a back-flip before being mobbed by his team-mates. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, he said: "I've had it in the locker for a while, I just saved it for a special occasion and what better than New Year's Day. New year, new me." He always wanted to be a gymnast 🤸‍♂️😂 His wife Rebekah also tweeted: "He always wanted to be a gymnast." Predict 6 correct scores for your chance to win £250K.

Wolves vs Crystal Palace preview Diogo Jota still doubtful, Connor Wickham pushing to start
Wolves vs Crystal Palace preview Diogo Jota still doubtful, Connor Wickham pushing to start

Wolves vs Crystal Palace preview: Diogo Jota still doubtful, Connor Wickham pushing to start. Diogo Jota remains an injury doubt for Wolves ahead of the visit of Crystal Palace on Wednesday. The Portuguese forward has missed the last three matches with a hamstring problem and will be assessed in the run-up to kick-off. Wolves head into the fixture on the back of a striking 3-1 win at Tottenham and have also taken points off Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal this season, but Nuno Espirito Santo insists their mindset will be no different when they take on bottom-half opponents in Palace. "What we try to do is make the approach the same for every game," he said. "The opponent doesn't mean anything regarding our approach. We have to go game by game. We take the same care for all our opponents. "It doesn't matter which team come up in front of you, we have to be ready for it." Palace forward Wilfried Zaha is expecting a tough test but has called on his team-mates to produce the sort of performance that shocked Manchester City last month. "Wolves are very good, they've got a lot of good players, are a good passing team and have got a good shape that they stick to," he said. "They've got good wingers and midfielders that are very creative. "That (City) game just proves that if we're all on it, that's what we can do. I feel like we should do that a lot more. If we just manage to pull it all together, we can get big results like that." Like Jota, winger Adama Traore will be assessed after going off with a minor knock during Saturday's win at Wembley. Palace boss Roy Hodgson could consider rotating his starting XI after watching them struggle to create in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea. Vicente Guaita is expected to retain his place in goal ahead of the fit-again Wayne Hennessey but striker Connor Wickham is pushing to start after successive substitute appearances. Christian Benteke remains Palace's only injury absentee because of a knee injury. Palace away might be a little bit better. At home, teams sit back a lot more, but they can have a go at Wolves. Both teams have got enough about them with pace up front to hurt either team. Wolves had a great result the other day, I called that game 4-1 - my mate text me who's a Wolves fan, he said they were singing Merson, what's the score! Fair play to them, I didn't see that coming but they were outstanding in the second half. They've been a credit this season, and I think it'll be another open game. But Palace, with Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend and the pace of Jeffrey Schlupp will cause problems the other way too. Arsenal head coach Unai Emery fined £8,000 by FA for kicking a bottle tow ards a fan

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery fined £8,000 by FA for kicking a bottle towards a fan. Unai Emery has been fined £8,000 by the Football Association after he admitted improper conduct during Arsenal's game against Brighton for kicking a bottle towards a fan. The Arsenal head coach was charged last week over the incident which happened late on in their Boxing Day draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium and was not included in the officials' match report. Emery immediately apologised to the supporter after seeing the bottle had gone into the stands and subsequently repeated his regret at a pre-match news conference last week. An FA statement read: "Arsenal Manager Unai Emery has been fined £8,000 after he admitted an FA improper conduct charge and accepted the standard penalty. "It concerned his conduct during the game against Brighton on 26 December 2018." Emery said after the match he was hopeful an apology would be the end of the matter but later added he would respect any decision the FA made. He said: "I repeat my apologies for my individual action but I kick the bottle because it is near me, not because it is my intention. "But I have to respect the decision because it is a circumstance of my action but not another intention from me with the supporter. I say to them my apology." FA seeks observations from Charlie Austin over Man City gesture
FA seeks observations from Charlie Austin over Man City gesture

FA seeks observations from Charlie Austin over Man City gesture. The FA is seeking observations from Charlie Austin after he appeared to make a gesture towards Manchester City fans during Southampton's 3-1 defeat on Sunday. Austin has been asked to explain the gesture he made as he was leaving the field of play after being substituted for Shane Long. The 29-year-old was booked in the second half and then booed as he walked off the pitch ten minutes later, where there was some suggestion that he made an offensive sign to fans. In 2013, Jack Wilshere - who played for Arsenal at the time - was banned for two games after he made an offensive gesture to Manchester City fans. However, there's nothing to suggest that Austin will face a similar punishment, with the FA simply saying they're "seeking observations" at this stage. Hibernian fan arrested after 'racist' abuse towards Clevid Dikamona. Hibernian have arrested a 65-year-old fan who allegedly directed racist abuse towards Hearts' Clevid Dikamona during the Edinburgh derby. Television coverage showed the supporter appearing to aim racist comments at the 28-year-old Congo international. Hibs condemned the "unacceptable" incident following the 1-0 defeat at Easter Road, and said they would do "everything possible to identify the individual concerned and take the appropriate action". Six arrests were made at the Edinburgh derby on Saturday in total. The previous meeting between the sides was marred when Hibernian manager Neil Lennon was struck with a coin at Tynecastle. A punch was also aimed at Hearts goalkeeper Zdenek Zlamal, while a man was later charged with assaulting an assistant referee.

Pep Guardiola defends Manchester City's Premier League title credentials. Pep Guardiola has defended Manchester City's title credentials despite back-to-back defeats handing Liverpool the initiative at the top of the Premier League. Guardiola's champions endured a miserable Christmas as they were shocked by Crystal Palace and Leicester, surrendering the lead in both matches to make it three defeats in four following a loss to Chelsea earlier in December. Unbeaten Liverpool took full advantage to make Thursday's meeting between the two clubs, live on Sky Sports, in Manchester a must-win game for Guardiola's side. December 30, 2018, 2:00pm Live on Before then City head to Southampton on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, needing to get themselves back on track, having slipped to third place behind Tottenham in the table. During a poor run which has coincided with an injury to key midfielder Fernandinho, City have looked well short of the side that earned a record 100 points last season, but Guardiola sees a team still capable of defending their title. "We did well so far," he said. "We got 44 points in the first round. If you get the same number of points in the second round, that's 88 points. With 88 points, you are champions. You have the numbers to be champions. "Most of the Premier League champions in the past 20 years won it with less points. We did quite well. We did really well. "But of course you have the past two games, against Crystal Palace and Leicester, and you have that sense, because there are two teams there now who are better than us in the last month. January 3, 2019, 7:00pm Live on "What can we say when Liverpool keep nine clean sheets and score a lot of goals? We cannot compete with that in terms of comparing with them. "So we look at ourselves, and tomorrow against Southampton, we have to do what we do, and try to win, and when that happens, everything comes back to a normal position." Guardiola is well known for refusing to budge from his tactical approach and laughed when he was asked if he thought he might need to now. "Oh, I was waiting for that question," he said. "I was waiting for it later. That is not going to happen. It did not happen in the first year, it is not going to happen. "Why should I? Because I lost two games? No way. It is definitely not going to happen." Predict 6 correct scores for your chance to win £250K.

Bristol City 1 0 Rotherham Adam Webster hits winner against nine man Millers
Bristol City 1 0 Rotherham Adam Webster hits winner against nine man Millers

Bristol City 1-0 Rotherham: Adam Webster hits winner against nine-man Millers. Adam Webster headed an 86th-minute winner to give Bristol City a 1-0 Championship win over a Rotherham side who finished with nine men. The centre-back was on hand to nod home Jack Hunt's cross from the right, with goalkeeper Marek Rodak just failing to keep the ball out with a desperate dive. Rotherham were reduced to 10 men in the 64th minute when full-back Billy Jones, booked 12 minutes earlier, was shown a second yellow card for pulling back Famara Diedhiou. That became nine men eight minutes later as Richie Towell leapt into a late challenge on Josh Brownhill in the centre of the pitch, earning a straight red from referee Scott Duncan. The visitors showed tremendous resistance with their two-man disadvantage, but could not deny Lee Johnson's team extending their unbeaten run to seven games, with the Millers slipping into the relegation zone as a result. Both sides squandered good chances in an open, entertaining first half. Rodak made the first save of note after 10 minutes, reacting smartly to keep out Diedhiou's near-post header from a Callum O'Dowda corner. Jamie Paterson should have done better with a 13th-minute header that brought a comfortable save from Rodak, but soon Rotherham were showing attacking intent of their own. Striker Michael Smith had a low 20th-minute shot saved by Niki Maenpaa, but the main threat from the visitors came in the shape of Jon Taylor, operating on the right. He robbed Jay Dasilva only to shoot into the side-netting and in the 26th minute forced a low save from Maenpaa. Taylor had two other opportunities before the half-time whistle, having a fierce shot parried by Maenpaa and volleying just wide after a weak punch from the City keeper. At the other end, Paterson had a volley blocked and claims for a penalty when Diedhiou's header appeared to strike the arm of a Rotherham defender were waved aside by referee Duncan. The second half soon followed the pattern of the first, with both teams hungry to attack, while lacking the finishing power to break the deadlock. Then came the two dismissals and, with home fans roaring them on, City mounted wave after wave of attacks, only to be frustrated by some committed last-ditch defending. Webster finally broke Rotherham's resistance and after the goal the home side went close to extending their advantage on several occasions. Brownhill hit the crossbar, Rodak made a fine save to deny Paterson and substitute Andreas Weimann fired over when he should have scored. Predict 6 correct scores for your chance to win £250K.
