REGINA, Sask. – In a much hyped re-match of last season’s Canada West semi-final, the UBC Thunderbirds (0-1) couldn’t overcome a barrage of penalties in dropping their season opener 36-20 to the Regina Rams (1-0) at Mosaic Stadium on Friday night. UBC saw 23 yellow flags thrown against them, pushing them 210 yards backwards and wiping out two touchdowns in the process. Regina was not much better, getting called for 18 infractions for 118 yards, but the Ram penalties seemed to come at less critical moments throughout the contest. “That amount of penalties is just unacceptable,” said UBC head coach Blake Nill after the game. “We told the players in the locker room they need to be disciplined. This is the referee’s first game of the season as well, so they’re going to call it tight. Everyone needs to better than that, all through the coaching staff and right up to the head coach.” Regina’s Noah Picton won the battle of the quarterbacks over UBC’s Michael O’Connor. Picton, 2016’s Hec Crighton Award winner as U SPORTS, threw for 335 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while O’Connor managed just 155 yards with one interception.
VANCOUVER – UBC’s training camp has an international flare this year as recruit Diego Alatorre fights for a stating spot on the T-Bird offensive line. Alatorre is a native of Guadalajara, Mexico and will go down as the very first Mexican national to play for UBC when the regular season begins. Alatorre started playing football seven years ago in Mexico, where the North American version of the game has quickly skyrocketed to the second most popular sport in that country over the last decade, trailing only soccer. “The sport is just getting bigger in Mexico. There are NFL games coming now,” said Alatorre, referring to Mexico City’s sold out NFL game in 2016 and scheduled game for the 2017 season between the Oakland Raiders and the New England Patriots at Estadio Azteca. The 6’2” 300 pound Alatorre is decisive in explaining the goals for his freshman year at UBC. “I just want to get my starting spot locked in and to work hard to get that Vanier Cup.” T-Bird All-Canadian and Grey Cup champion, Jason Riley has been brought in as a guest offensive line coach for UBC’s training camp. He is impressed with Alatorre’s progression thus far. “With the language barrier and the cultural differences, you take all that into consideration and he has just been fantastic,” explained Riley. “He’s been a pleasant surprise every single day.” “Obviously I miss home,” said Alatorre. “But the weather is perfect, it’s a beautiful university and I’m just happy to be here.” UBC's 2017 training camp continues until August 23, when the 'Birds will travel to Kamloops for a Canada West non-conference game against the Alberta Golden Bears.
TORONTO (U SPORTS) – The UBC Thunderbirds earned their 11th national title in program history on Sunday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, defeating their Canada West rivals from Alberta by a score of 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 13-25, 25-20) in the U SPORTS championship final.
VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (1-0) shutout the Saskatchewan Huskies (0-1) 4-0 in the 2016-17 CIS women's hockey season opener for both squads on Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Cassandra Vilgrain and Nicole Saxvik led the 'Birds with a goal and two assists, while Alexa Ranahan and Madison Patrick scored one goal apiece. A banner-raising ceremony preceded Friday night's action, with several T-Birds alumni on the ice to honour the 2015-16 Canada West women's hockey champions.
VANCOUVER - UBC was held scoreless for their second straight game in a tightly contested 0-0 draw with the undefeated University of Alberta Golden Bears. At a rainy Thunderbird Stadium, UBC was forced to play a man down when Karn Phagura was ejected after his second yellow card at the 60 minute mark. The draw puts UBC at 4-0-3, one point behind the division lead. Alberta earned its first tie of the season as their 6 wins are tops in the CIS.
UBC Head Coach Blake Nill and UBC QB Michael O'Connor talk about UBC's 39-24 victory over Alberta. A loud crowd of more than 5600 took in the game at Thunderbird Stadium.
