Woe, Canada: Germany stuns Canada 4-3 in Olympic semis
Woe, Canada: Germany stuns Canada 4-3 in Olympic semis

GANGNEUNG, South Korea (AP) — First curling, now this.It has been a rough few days for Canada at its best Winter Olympics ever because of struggles in the two sports that are most tightly woven into its national identity. In perhaps the biggest blow of all, the men's hockey team didn't even make it to the final courtesy of a stunning 4-3 loss to Germany on Friday night in the semifinals. For a nation already in despair over no men's or women's curling medals and the women's hockey team losing to the rival Americans in a shootout in the gold-medal game, this one won't be easy to swallow as Canada's bid to win three consecutive Olympic golds fell horribly short.Through 14 days, 10 of Canada's best-ever 27 medals are gold.Losing to Germany guaranteed none will be in hockey."They came out ready to play," Canada forward Rob Klinkhammer said."We didn't.They were the better team." Without NHL stars Sidney Crosby and Drew Doughty, elite goaltender Carey Price — and no Stanley Cup-winning coach Mike Babcock, either — Canada was skated out of the building by coach Marco Sturm's team that now faces an even stiffer test in the favored Russians in Sunday's final. After winning back-to-back gold medals in Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, and three of the past four dating to 2002, Canada's self-described band of journeymen will play the Czech Republic for bronze on Saturday."We did not match their work ethic," Canada forward Derek Roy said."It stings a lot.It is not a good feeling to lose a game like that." Canada has only settled for a bronze medal twice in 21 previous Olympic men's hockey tournaments and took home gold or silver in each of the six games with women's hockey."Disappointed, for sure," coach Willie Desjardins said."Everybody's disappointed. We knew what we wanted and we worked hard to get here and we came up a little bit short." Canada will likely play for bronze without top-liner Gilbert Brule, who was ejected for a brutal hit to the head of David Wolf at center ice, one of several bad penalties by an uncharacteristically undisciplined team.Desjardins and his staff made some adjustments at the first intermission, but never called a timeout when Germany went up 3-0 or 4-1.Kevin Poulin was starting in net because No.1 goalie Ben Scrivens injured his shoulder/collarbone area in a collision in the quarterfinal against Finland, and he allowed goals scored by Brooks Macek, Matthias Plachta, Frank Mauer and Patrick Hager on 15 shots.Poulin refused to speak to reporters afterward. There weren't many answers for what happened to the team that had looked dominant against Finland."I don't know," forward Andrew Ebbett said."Just a couple penalties there early on.We were in the box the whole second period. It's tough to win a hockey game when you're killing penalties that whole time.We maybe needed two, three, five more minutes there at the end maybe to tie it up, but it was too late." Canada outshot Germany 15-1 in the third period but couldn't climb all the

Russians get 1st gold, Germany tops Canada in Olympic hockey
Russians get 1st gold, Germany tops Canada in Olympic hockey

The Russians finally won a gold medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics. The Canadian men's hockey team won't even get the chance after losing to Germany.Alina Zagitova edged training partner Evgenia Medvedeva on Friday in figure skating, giving the Russians a reason to celebrate a 1-2 finish."I haven't fully realized yet that I've won," the 15-year-old Zagitova said."I think I need some time to understand that I won the Olympic Games." She and Medvedeva tied in the free skate with 156.65 points, but Zagitova had won the short program Wednesday — giving her the edge by only 1.31 points."I can't believe I am the champion," Zagitova said. The Russians' gold drought had been one of the ongoing story lines of the games, and they were running out of time to get one — although those concerns were eased a bit by Zagitova and Medvedeva coming into the day in prime position to win. Now, the Russians should have a great shot at another gold medal with the men's hockey team advancing to the final after a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic. They'll face the Germans, who shocked two-time defending champion Canada 4-3 to advance to Sunday's title game.Germany jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 4-1 before Canada rallied to get back in the game during the third period. They came close, but will do no better than bronze when they face the Czech Republic on Saturday."We deserve to be there and the best team will win," Russian forward Ilya Kovalchuk said."We will be ready for the game, for sure." Switzerland topped Canada to win the bronze medal in men's curling. The gold-medal game between the U.S.and Sweden is Saturday.Kelsey Serwa of Canada won the gold in women's skicross, adding to the silver she won four years ago in Sochi.Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands took the men's 1,000 meters in speedskating, edging Havard Lorentzen of Norway by 0.04 seconds.Nuis also won the 1,500 last week.Martin Fourcade fell short in his bid for his fourth Olympic gold medal in South Korea as France finished fifth in the men's 4x7.5-kilometer biathlon relay, won by Sweden. In Gangneung, Zagitova skated first and she nailed everything during her program to "Don Quixote."The 18-year-old Medvedeva matched Zagitova — but that wasn't good enough to bring home the gold."I put everything out there that I had," Medvedeva said."I left everything on the ice.I have no regrets." Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada, who had considered retirement, won the bronze.A few hours later, Vasily Koshechkin stopped all 31 shots he faced to help the Russians advance in men's hockey.Nikita Gusev and Vladislav Gavrikov scored goals 27 seconds apart in the second period, and Kovalchuk added an empty-netter with 20.9seconds left to seal the Russians' first trip to the final since 1998."It is huge for us and the players and for the country," Russian forward Mikhail Grigorenko said of playing for the gold."It would mean everything to us." Switzerland's men's team clinched the bronze in curling when Benoit Schwarz took out two Canadian stone

USA men's hockey's Olympic medal dreams end in shootout loss to Czech Republic
USA men's hockey's Olympic medal dreams end in shootout loss to Czech Republic

Looking back on the 2018 Winter Olympics, the legacy for this iteration of the U.S.men's hockey team will be remembered in two words: Missed opportunities.A 3-2 shootout loss to the Czech Republic in Tuesday's quarterfinals sealed the fate of the Americans, who failed to reach the medal round at the Olympics for the first time since 2008.And although U.S.medal aspirations were fuzzy without NHL players on the roster, a tournament marred by inconsistency qualifies as an abject disappointment, if only because Team USA was capable of delivering much more.Their final game in Pyeongchang was emblematic of that.Riding the high of a five-goal outburst 24 hours earlier, the U.S.set the tone against the Czechs when Ryan Donato continued his storybook tournament with the game's first goal 6:20 in — his Olympic-leading fifth goal. But Team USA squandered what should have been easy momentum, falling into penalty trouble and taking their foot off the gas.The Czech Republic, a perfect 3-0 in group play, is a mature and even-keeled group.Adept at playing together and on larger international ice, they baited the Americans into a trap and dominated possession during the second period and parts of the third.A Tomas Kundratek goal, the second by a Czechs defenseman, made it 2-1 in the second. And if not for Jim Slater's unlikely goal with the U.S.shorthanded for a third time in the period, the Czechs might've run away with the game. The U.S.also failed to capitalize on their five power plays, including a slashing penalty called with 1:20 left in regulation, giving them 40 seconds of 4-on-3 power play in overtime."We couldn't put it together. We looked scrambled in that key moment," captain Brian Gionta said on NBC.If not for starting goalie Ryan Zapolski, the U.S.surely would have lost in regulation. He kept them in it most of the game, stopping 26 of 28 shots, and was equally stellar in the shootout. The lone slip-up came in the second round, when Petr Koukal beat him, joining Czech shootout lore. The American shooters couldn't muster a single goal on Pavel Francouz, who saw minimal work in regulation with just 20 shots against. The U.S.had averaged 32 for the tournament.MORE: Wishful thinking: How the 2018 Olympics might've looked with NHL players The Czechs advance to face either Norway or the Olympic Athletes from Russia in the semifinals, guaranteeing they'll at least have a shot at bronze. That should have been the Americans' fate. The 23-man roster, composed by the late general manager Jim Johansson, was inherently flawed but still included 15 players with NHL experience that should have challenged other nations missing their best players, too.In the end, a premature elimination for the Americans is about what could be expected. They managed only two wins in Pyeongchang — both against Slovakia. It turned out the three collegiates on the team were Team USA's greatest asset.

Slovenia tops Slovakia 3-2 in shootout at Olympics
Slovenia tops Slovakia 3-2 in shootout at Olympics

Gasper Kroselj stopped four of the five shots he faced in a shootout and Ziga Jeglic's slap shot high into the net was the difference Saturday night as Slovenia beat Slovakia 3-2 in preliminary-round play at the Olympics.Slovenia opened the scoring when Blaz Gregorc whistled a shot from the blue line past Branislav Konrad just one minute into the second period.Anze Kuralt added another at 15:44, tipping in a pass from Jan Mursak as he was surrounded by three Slovakia players.Slovakia answered at 4:17 when Milos Bubela tipped a slap shot past Kroselj as he stood in the crease.Marcel Hascak tied things up at 14:04 of the third period, ripped a slap shot over the glove of Kroselj, who then had to scramble late in the game to turn away several scoring chances during a Slovakia power play with only a few minutes left. After the scoreless overtime, Rok Ticar feinted left and slid a slow shot past Konrad to give Slovenia a 1-0 lead in the shootout.Ladislav Nagy evened things up, but Andrej Kudrna, Peter Olvecky, Martin Bakos and Hascak all missed or were stopped by Kroselj before Jeglic's winner.

No. 2 Virginia basketball upset by Virginia Tech in OT
No. 2 Virginia basketball upset by Virginia Tech in OT

Virginia’s quest for perfection in the ACC came to a jarring end on Saturday night. All the more dispiriting for the second-ranked Cavaliers was the loss came against contentious in-state rival Virginia Tech, which rallied in overtime, 61-60, at raucous John Paul Jones Arena.Virginia had its 15-game wining streak snapped and likely lost a chance to ascend to No.1 in the rankings for the first time since December 1982.The Cavaliers (23-2, 12-1) still hold a two-game lead in the ACC over second-place Clemson, which they beat in the teams’ only meeting, with five games left in the regular season but failed to sweep the season series in the Commonwealth Clash. The Hokies, meanwhile, secured a signature victory in front of an announced crowd of 14,623 that’s certain to boost their NCAA tournament profile. And the accomplished it by overcoming a five-point deficit in the final 39 seconds of overtime.Kerry Blackshear Jr.’s putback with 5.8seconds to play produced the final margin in the Hokies’ fifth win in six games.Virginia Tech (17-8, 7-6) was able to celebrate officially when Ty Jerome’s deep three-pointer missed, dealing the Cavaliers their first loss since Dec.5 at West Virginia.“I say it with 100 percent sincerity. It’s just who our kids are,” Coach Buzz Williams said of the Hokes’ first road victory over a ranked opponent this season.“There’s multiple [games] where we could have just stopped or quit or splintered apart. It’s the togetherness of those kids.” The first momentum swing in overtime tilted toward Virginia, which took a 54-51 lead with a 5-0 burst that included De’Andre Hunter’s three-point play. But the Hokies came right back to tie when senior guard Justin Bibbs swished a three-pointer from the left wing with 2:27 to go.Devon Hall’s three-pointer put Virginia ahead, 57-54, and the margin grew to 59-54 when Isaiah Wilkins made both ends of a one-and-one.The Hokies then clawed to 60-59 with 20 seconds remaining on Blackshear’s layup and a three-pointer from Justin Robinson. With 13 seconds to go, Hall missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Blackshear collected the rebound off Robinson’s missed layup before scoring on the follow while drawing a foul.“I shoot tons of free throws every day, so it’s frustrating,” said Hall, who had a team-high 16 points but made only 1 of 3 from the foul line.He entered shooting 93.4percent from the line. Also troubling was the Cavaliers’ wayward shooting from three-point range, where they went 11 for 38, including 1 for 5 in overtime.Jerome and guard Kyle Guy, Virginia’s third starting guard, combined to go 4 for 24 (17 percent) from beyond the arc.In a game of steep momentum swings, Virginia erased a four-point deficit in the final 1:19 of the second half to force overtime.Jerome made both baskets for the Cavaliers, and the sophomore had a chance at the game-winner with a three-pointer from NBA distance — well within his range — but the shot bounced off the front iron as the buzzer sounded in regulation.

Derrick Rose buyout rumors: Wizards join Timberwolves as interested teams
Derrick Rose buyout rumors: Wizards join Timberwolves as interested teams

As expected, the Utah Jazz waived Derrick Rose on Saturday, paving the way for him to join another team in the near future.Rose was traded to the Jazz from the Cleveland Cavaliers last week as part of the three-team deal that sent Rodney Hood and George Hill to Cleveland, but reports indicated that Utah never had any interest in keeping Rose. The Minnesota Timberwolves have already reportedly shown interest in adding Rose, and now ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Washington Wizards have also emerged as possible suitors. The Wizards will be without All-Star point guard John Wall for at least another month while he recovers from knee surgery, so Rose could conceivably join the point guard rotation currently featuring Tomas Satoransky and Tim Frazier.Generally with buyouts, teams wait until the player clears waivers and becomes an unrestricted free agent to sign him.But in Rose's case, since he's already on a minimum contract, a team could also choose to simply claim him off waivers.Either way, Rose will not be suiting up for the Jazz, and we'll have to wait and see if any team sees value in adding the former MVP who averaged 9.8points and 1.6assists in 16 games for the Cavs this season. We also have to consider the possibility that, at 29 years old, Rose may have already played his last game in the NBA.

North Carolina defeats NC State 96-89 in what may or may not have been a rivalry game
North Carolina defeats NC State 96-89 in what may or may not have been a rivalry game

North Carolina wrapped up its most impressive week of the season thus far with a 96-89 triumph over NC State Saturday afternoon in Raleigh.Luke Maye scored 33 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the 21st-ranked Tar Heels, who were coming off an emotional 82-78 triumph over No.9 Duke on Thursday night.Torin Dorn scored 21 in a losing effort for the Wolfpack. There’s no debate that this is “rivalry week” on Tobacco Road. The only question over the past seven days has been which games involving the state of North Carolina’s three most recognizable college basketball programs fall under the umbrella of the unofficial event. Before the week even really got going, North Carolina senior guard Joel Berry ruffled more than a few feathers by stating definitively that UNC-NC State was not a true rivalry game.“Honestly, there’s only one rivalry game, and it’s with Duke,” Berry said on Tuesday.“I don’t count NC State as being a rivalry. We just don’t like them, but it’s not a rivalry.” The comments were especially ill-received due to the fact that they came just two weeks after NC State had upset North Carolina in Chapel Hill.First-year Wolfpack head coach Kevin Keatts downplayed the comments when he was informed of them.“Listen, he’s been in the league a lot longer than I have,” Keatts said.“You can’t make guys say it’s a rivalry game if they don’t think it is.I respect it.We’re just excited about playing the game.I’m not even sure that our guys know about it.Our guys are locked into the moment.” His guys knew about it.“It would only be insulting if you valued their opinion or if you put them on your level,” said NC State senior forward Abdul-Malik Abu said of Berry’s comments.“You just have to look past that and let your game speak.I don’t know what to consider it, I just know this game is important to our fans.Me personally, I just don’t like anything blue.” For his part, Berry scored 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the UNC win.He also improved to 6-2 against NC State over his college career. If that career record is going to be altered one more time, it’ll have to come next month at the ACC tournament in Brooklyn.

Baylor upsets No. 10 Kansas – CollegeBasketballTalk
Baylor upsets No. 10 Kansas – CollegeBasketballTalk

Baylor maintained its recent winning streak by earning a 76-62 Big 12 home win over No.10 Kansas on Saturday afternoon. The Bears (15-10, 5-7) have now won three consecutive games as they earned their biggest win of the season in knocking off the Jayhawks.Jo Lual-Acuil Jr.paced Baylor with 19 points while Manu Lecomte had 18 points and Nuni Omot had 17 points. The win for Baylor snaps an 11-game losing streak against Kansas as they have now built a little bit of momentum entering the home stretch of conference play. It’s unlikely that Baylor gets into the Field of 68 in March given its early-season losing streaks, but a few more wins could certainly make things more interesting in a few weeks.Kansas (19-6, 8-4) struggled to find consistency on the offensive end in this one as they tinkered with some new lineups.Inserting Mitch Lightfoot and Marcus Garrett into the starting lineup didn’t do much to jumpstart the Jayhawks as they shot 6-for-31 from three-point range for the game.Devonte’ Graham paced Kansas with 23 points as he was the only consistent offensive threat for the Jayhawks on the afternoon.Malik Newman added 15 points for Kansas, as he came off the bench in this one.The Jayhawks are still going to be the favorites to win the Big 12 — especially given Saturday’s chaos with West Virginia and Oklahoma both losing to conference bottom feeders — but this might be their toughest race in quite some time. The lack of depth, specifically interior depth, is a glaring concern for Kansas as they don’t have much help for Udoka Azubuike. They’re now behind Texas Tech in the loss column after Saturday’s loss (before the Red Raiders play). The inconsistent offense on Saturday is a bit troubling since Kansas is trying to juggle some lineups to figure out a new rotation.Regardless of whether players like Newman and Lagerald Vick start or come off the bench, Kansas needs those guys to be consistent to alleviate some of the burden placed on Graham.Things aren’t going to get any easier for Kansas these next few games either as this will be the stretch that determines their status in the Big 12.The Jayhawks travel to Iowa State — who just knocked off Oklahoma at home — and then have to face three consecutive ranked opponents in West Virginia, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.Kansas needs to figure out its rotation quickly if they want to survive that four-game stretch and win the conference once again.Given its history, you have to give Bill Self and the Jayhawks the benefit of the doubt. But three losses in the last six games that includes falling to Baylor and Oklahoma State means that Kansas still has a lot of work to do.
