In his second start of the season, Carey Price made 28 saves. The Wild opened the scoring on the power play at 6:57 of the first period. Fiala one-timed Mats Zuccarello’s pass in the slot to net his 30th goal of the season and seventh in his last six games. The Canadiens (20-46-11) threatened in the second period but couldn’t find the back of the net. Rem Pitlick had a great chance on a breakaway but was denied by Talbot. Frédérick Gaudreau Tyler Pitlick thought he scored his first goal in a Habs uniform by shooting a loose puck in an open net. However, Minnesota used its coach’s challenge for goaltender interference and the goal was called off. Canadiens put up a good fight, but succumb 8-4 to Capitals' onslaught Montreal battled back to within a goal two times, but goaltender Sam Montembeault was peppered with 41 shots and only stopped 33. Canadiens goalie Sam Montembeault makes a pad save against Washington Capitals' Tom Wilson (43) at the Bell Centre on Saturday, April 16, 2022, in Montreal. The plucky Canadiens tried to keep the game close, but the Washington Capitals had too much firepower Saturday as they cruised to an 8-4 win at the Bell Centre. Ryan Poehling’s second goal of the game early in the third period brought Montreal to within a goal for the second time in the game, but Garnet Hathaway scored 46 seconds later. The Capitals got insurance goals from Dmitry Orlov, Justin Schultz and T.J. Oshie with the last two goals coming on the power play. With the win, the Capitals all but wrapped up the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. They opened a 15-point edge over the ninth-place New York Islanders, whose only hope is to win their eight remaining games, while the Capitals lose their last seven. Montreal, which lost its fifth consecutive game, remains in 31st place overall. Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault was beaten eight times on 41 shots. The Canadiens did a good job of killing a holding penalty to David Savard midway through the first period. They held the Capitals to one shot on goal and created a scoring chance when Poehling had a short-handed breakaway. But Savard was back on the ice for only a dozen seconds when Nic Dowd deflected Orlov’s shot from the blue line for his 10th goal of the season. The Canadiens thought they had a power-play goal a few minutes later when Rem Pitlick was in front to field the rebound of Corey Schueneman’s shot from the blue line. The apparent goal was waved off when officials ruled Pitlick kicked the loose puck into the net and that ruling was confirmed by the situation room in Toronto after a video review. Montreal scored a goal that counted early in the second period. Savard cleared the puck and Christian Dvorak passed behind his back as he crossed the blue line and found Jakes Evans in full flight on the right wing. Evans beat Vitek Vanecek with a shot to the far post for his 11th goal. The game opened up after Josh Anderson and Nicklas Backstrom went off with coincidental minor penalties at 7:47. With the teams playing four-on-four, they combined for three goals in a 49-second span. Longueuil native Anthony Mantha opened a two-goal lead for the Capitals when he followed his own rebound and scored at 8:03 and then scored off the rush at 8:37. Mantha, the grandson of four-time Stanley Cup winner André Pronovost, has been working his way back into a prominent role with the Capitals after missing four months with a shoulder injury that required surgery. Former Canadien Lars Eller assisted on both of Mantha’s goals. Poehling completed the mid-period scoring spree when he beat Vanecek at 8:51. Alex Ovechkin, who is chasing a record-tying ninth 50-goal season, restored Washington’s two-goal lead late in the second period. Evgeny Kuznetsov set him up in the slot for his 47th of the season. Nick Suzuki scored his 20th goal late in the game. The Canadiens killed three penalties in the second period, including a 5-on-3 Washington advantage for 1:14. Montreal wraps up a four-game homestand with games Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild and Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers, before finishing the week with a road game against the Ottawa Senators. Last time the Toronto Maple Leafs rolled through Montreal, the last-place Canadiens rolled over them. The lowly Habs exploded for the game’s first five goals, and a half-full Bell Centre was on its feet chanting, “Olé! Olé! Olé!” midway through Period 2. To be frank, it was arguably the flattest performance turned in by these Cup-dreaming Maple Leafs in 2022. "Those are always games you keep in the back of your head," Auston Matthews said before Saturday’s rematch. "We didn't come out with much of a purpose that game, and they had a lot of fun. We get another crack at them here." While Toronto’s crack was much more forceful this time around, the result was the same: two points left unclaimed, as the grossly outshot Canadiens squeezed out a 4-2 win. Again, Toronto failed to stash points in meeting against the 32nd-ranked club. The Maple Leafs asserted their dominance early in the rematch, delaying Montreal’s first shot on Erik Källgren until the evening’s nine-minute mark and jumping on the scoreboard on their very first shift. Matthews kept his pursuit of 50 humming, wiring his NHL-best 47th goal of the season, past Jake Allen. Wingmen Mitch Marner (70 points) and Michael Bunting (50 points) collected benchmark stats with assists on the sequence. “I didn't come in this year thinking I'd be producing like this. I just really wanted to help this team. Individual success is a good thing, too. So, I'm happy with my season. I just kinda hope I can keep it rolling,” said Bunting before the game, unsure why the bulk of his points have arrived away from Scotiabank Arena. “It's funny. My dad actually texted me, saying, ‘Oh, you're going back on the road. That's good.’ He just laughed. ... I love playing in front of the fans, but right now I'm just scoring more on the road.” In the second frame, David Savard activated from the blue line, beat William Nylander on a drive to the net and converted a beautiful cross-ice feed from Laurent Dauphin to tie a game that had no business being so. “They are a team that's playing with a lot of confidence," Jason Spezza said beforehand. "Marty (St. Louis) has got them playing free hockey. They check hard now. Those are dangerous teams to play against." Cole Caufield sniped his 14th of his rookie season on the power play, giving the home side the lead. And the barn erupted about as loud as one can when it houses the first team to be mathematically eliminated from the postseason. That’s not a dig. That’s a compliment to a city smart enough to recognize a reset and still turn out in rowdy droves to appreciate a strong effort on a Saturday night. The Leafs stuck with it, and Nylander knotted the game 2-2 with a power-play strike. Halfway through the third, as tensions swelled and the Leafs controlled play, the Bell Centre did The Wave. Partying like they already knew what was coming. Paul Byron played the role of hero, looking pass but sniping the winner on an odd-man rush. Christian Dvorak tacked on an empty-netter. Sometimes, winning the night can be satisfaction enough. “It's one of the best places to play the NHL,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “If you're on the road, it's an incredible environment, great atmosphere. Coming in with the Leafs, even more so.” Indeed, the atmosphere was incredible. The Leafs should hope for the same Sunday as they host the mighty Florida Panthers in the second half of this back-to-back. Petr Mrazek will start in net for Toronto. #Habs #Canadiens #NHL

The Montreal Canadiens avenged last week's crushing loss to the Buffalo Sabres by improving their winning streak to four games. After falling 5-2 to Buffalo on Super Bowl Sunday, Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield combined to give the Habs a 4-0 win Wednesday night. Suzuki scored twice while Caufield notched one goal and one assist. Jake Evans added the empty-netter. Samuel Montembeault recorded his first NHL shutout blocking all 32 shots sent his way. Montembeault talks 'amazing' first career shutout for hometown Canadiens Craig Anderson allowed three goals but kept his team in the game with 25 saves. With the loss, the Sabres slump to a four-game losing skid. The Canadiens scored the first goal for a fourth straight game following a treacherous giveaway by Cody Eakin in his own zone. Montreal tried to respond with a shot with Suzuki pouncing on a loose puck in the slot and tapping in his 10th of the season. Suzuki was awarded a penalty shot at 5:57 of the second period after the centreman intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and was hooked by Dylan Cousins. Suzuki started his attempt far on the right side, then patiently cut inside and beat Anderson with an upper right-hand corner shot. Josh Anderson left the game late in the second when he was hit in the head while trying to block a shot from Casey Mittelstadt. Paul Byron also didn't return to the game after suffering a hit in the first period. Caufield gave the Habs a 3-0 lead when he pounced on Suzuki's faceoff and shocked Anderson with a wrist shot. Under Martin St. Louis' seven-game tenure as interim head coach, Caufield has picked up six goals and 10 total points. Late in the third, Evans slotted in the empty-netter from the neutral zone to confirm Montreal's 4-0 win. #Habs #Canadiens #NHL
