Toledo Walleye vs Kalamazoo Wings Highlights 4.19.17 Game Four

WINGS TIE SERIES WITH EIGHT GOAL OUTBURST AGAINST WALLEYE April 19, 2017 For Immediate Release KALAMAZOO, MI— The Kalamazoo Wings were provided multi-point nights by seven skaters and tallied a season-high eight goals en route to an 8-5 victory over the Toledo Walleye in game four of the best-of-seven Central Division Semi-Finals series on Wednesday night at Wings Event Center. Not skipping a beat after their four-goal third period from the night before, the Wings roared out to the first goal of the game while working on a power play in the opening minutes. Lane Scheidl scooped the puck form behind the goal and centered to Josh Pitt, whose quick wrist shot trickled between the legs of Jake Paterson. Less than two minutes later, the Wings added to their advantage with some gritty play along the boards. Kyle Blaney battled at the wall, freeing Tyler Biggs to corral the puck and feed it out to the line for Michael Trebish, who hammered a slap shot that was tipped in front by Brian Hart and into the net. Toledo got on the scoresheet and cut the Wings’ lead in half after earning their first power play of the game during the middle stages of the first. A beautiful backdoor feed from Evan Rankin to Tyson Spink allowed the Walleye to get on board at the 10:04 mark of the period. Bouncing back in a hurry, Kalamazoo re-gained their two-goal lead at the 12:46 mark of the first period. After an aggressive forecheck from Peter Schneider helped steal the puck free, he was able to pinpoint Cam Darcy at the crease for a far-post wrist shot that slid past the leg of Paterson and in. Sixteen seconds later, Kalamazoo capped off a four-goal first frame with a blast from Scott Henegar from the left wing. Henegar gained the Toledo line and stepped into a slap shot that flew past the glove of Paterson and into the top corner. The goal from Henegar was the fourth on eleven shots for Kalamazoo through 13:02 of gameplay, and it was enough for the Walleye to pull Paterson in favor of Jeff Lerg. Minutes into the second period and on yet another power play, the Wings tacked on to their lead. After Darcy’s shot was knocked down before it got to the goal, Schneider crashed the loose puck and swept a backhand over the line to establish a 5-1 lead. Later on in the frame, the Walleye cashed in on an opportunity with Kalamazoo goalie Nick Riopel void of his stick. A long wrist shot by Alex Globke whizzed through a screen and over Riopel’s right leg for Toledo’s second of the contest. With under 30 seconds to go in the second period, the Wings again padded their lead to a game-high four goals as Eric Kattelus rifled a slap shot that ricocheted off a Walleye defender and into the net. The Wings cruised into the second intermission with a 6-2 advantage. The Walleye cranked up their pressure and attack in the third period and scored three goals in the first 11:02 to pull within a goal. Kyle Bonis, Tylor Spink, and Landon Oslanski highlighted the rapid-fire attack of the Walleye, as their markers cut the score to 6-5 in the final minutes of regulation. After handling the continued chances, the Wings used a scramble at the Walleye goal to regain control of the contest. Darcy gave the puck to Tanner Sorenson, whose low-slot slap shot hit a body, and laid flat for Pitt to bury his second of the night. With under two minutes to go and Lerg on the bench for an extra attacker, Kalamazoo knifed the puck out of their own zone and Pitt angled a shot towards the empty net to finish off his hat trick and seal the Wings’ 8-5 victory in game four. PITT’S PAIR LEADS WINGS TO SEVENTH WIN IN EIGHT OUTINGS March 10, 2017 For Immediate Release KALAMAZOO, MI—Nick Riopel made 30 saves and Josh Pitt scored twice as the Kalamazoo Wings cruised past the Toledo Walleye, 3-1, on Friday night at Wings Event Center. With an opening period that showcased endless energy and scoring chances, the Wings and Walleye each tested their opponent’s netminder in heaps during the first twenty minutes. Kalamazoo swung 15 shots towards Toledo goalie Jake Paterson, who was able to stop each effort, and the Walleye steered 11 shots towards Riopel, who denied each try. Midway through the second period and working on their third power play of the game, the Wings found the back of the goal for the game’s opening tally. As they held the puck along the outside, Tyler Biggs shoveled it along to Kyle Bushee, whose long-range slap shot was tipped in front by Pitt for his tenth goal of the season. Early in the third period and on yet another man-advantage try, Kalamazoo were able to capitalize with sustained pressure and space around the attacking zone. In nearly identical fashion to the first goal, Bushee walked the blue line and wired a waist-high wrist shot that was re-directed by Peter Schneider and bounced past Paterson. Kalamazoo’s special teams continued to play a factor in the third period, with Pitt adding his second goal of the night while shorthanded. Directly off a faceoff in the Walleye zone, Justin Taylor chopped the puck to Pitt on the wing, and he was able to slip it through the pads of Paterson. Riopel had his shutout spoiled with three minutes left in the contest after Shane Berschbach used a wall of screens to catch the Kalamazoo netminder off guard. Berschbach’s shot appeared to be a harmless wrist shot from the blue line, but Riopel lost sight of the puck and it trickled in. In a desperation effort, Toledo pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra attacker, but the Wings fought off the late attacks and tallied a 3-1 victory on home ice. Brampton Beast vs Kalamazoo Wings Highlights 3.3.17

WINGS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT BEHIND SCHNEIDER’S THREE-POINT EFFORT March 3, 2017 For Immediate Release KALAMAZOO, MI— Peter Schneider led the way offensively with three points (two goals, one assist), and Nick Riopel won his ninth game in his last ten starts, as the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Brampton Beast, 5-4, on Friday night at Wings Event Center. In a jam-packed first period, Brampton struck first after a well-executed setup on their second power play of the game. David Pacan settled the puck down on the right-wing side and fired it towards the middle of the ice, where Chris Auger re-directed it into the top corner of the net for his 18th goal of the season. The lead lasted less than three minutes, as the Wings equalized after creating an odd-man rush. Schneider paced a feed ahead of the play which was hauled in by Lane Scheidl. With a burst of speed, Scheidl tucked in behind the Beast defense and slipped a shot over the outstretched right leg of Brampton netminder Zach Fucale. Shortly after Scheidl tied the game for Kalamazoo, Brampton roared right back at the 11:23 mark of the period. Winning a faceoff in the attacking end, Pacan pulled the puck back to Jordan Henry, whose long shot snuck through a screen and past Riopel. Erasing their second deficit of the period, Kalamazoo pressured the Brampton defense in their own end and prevented the visitors from clearing the puck out. Holding the line at the left wing, Michael Trebish hammered a shot towards the goal which was deflected into the top corner of the net by Schneider. As the stalemate continued into the second period, the Wings took advantage of the increased space on the ice during a four-on-four. Tyler Biggs thieved the puck from a Beast skater and walked in on a two-on-one towards Fucale. Biggs sailed a wrist shot to the near side post and over the leg of Fucale, establishing a 3-2 lead for Kalamazoo. Seconds into the third period, Brampton moved into the Wings’ zone and established possession. Brandon Marino worked the puck to the middle of the ice where Pacan executed a pretty skate-to-stick maneuver and tallied his 33rd goal of the season. Minutes later in the third, Schneider gathered his second goal of the game in almost identical fashion to his first. Ben Wilson’s slap shot from the blue line was tipped in the high slot by Schneider and the puck trickled past Fucale. The Wings added some insurance after forcing a turnover in the Brampton zone and capitalizing on the counter attack. Justin Taylor stole the puck away and carried it over the line along the left wing, and uncorked a laser of a shot from the top of the circle that went over Fucale’s glove and into the roof of the goal. With less than a minute to go and Fucale on the bench for an extra attacker, Brandon Marino tapped the puck towards the goal during a net-mouth scramble and it rang off the post but ricocheted off the back leg of Riopel to bring Brampton to within a goal. It was as close as the Beast would get, as the Wings withstood the late attacks and earned a 5-4 victory on home ice. Fort Wayne Komets vs Kalamazoo Wings Highlights 2.12.17

WINGS BATTLE IN DIVISIONAL RUMBLE BUT FALL TO KOMETS February 12, 2017 KALAMAZOO, MI— It was a vintage edition of the Kalamazoo Wings and Fort Wayne Komets rivalry, but it was the visiting Komets that escaped with a 5-3 win on Sunday at Wings Event Center. In classic fashion between the Wings and Komets, it was a physical affair in the opening period, highlighted by up-tempo play and numerous chances. While on their second man advantage try of the game, Fort Wayne took the game’s first lead after Kyle Thomas smashed a trickling puck into the goal for his 23rd of the season. Five minutes later, the Komets added to their lead while carrying in on a two-on-one. Thomas lifted the puck along to Jamie Schaafsma, who was on the back door to chop the puck past Kalamazoo netminder Joel Martin. After earning their third power play of the game, the Wings finally broke through the Komets defense and lit the lamp. Kyle Blaney flung a backhand saucer pass to Kyle Bushee, who snapped a one-timer that carved through a web of bodies in front of the goal and beat a screened Garrett Bartus. Early in the second period and on yet another man advantage, Kalamazoo pressured but were answered by Bartus. After a stunning save by the Komets’ goalie, the long rebound was stretched ahead to Travis Ewanyk who, having just left the box, carried in on a breakaway. Ewanyk’s shot on the uncontested chance flew past Martin and gave the Komets a 3-1 lead. Less than a minute after Ewanyk’s tally, Kalamazoo drew back to within a goal. Josh Pitt floated a flawless pass to Justin Taylor, who held the puck patiently and saw a window above the glove of Bartus. Taylor roofed a backhander for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season. On their seventh power play try of the game, Kalamazoo tied the game at three after Lane Schiedl crashed through the traffic and to the front of the goal. Kyle Bushee’s shot was slowed down by the Komets’ defense, but Scheidl followed the play and one-touched a backhander into the top corner of the net for his 18th of the year. The third period was a bruising frame, as Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne traded punishing checks and scoring opportunities. Late in the period, the Komets were on the receiving end of a fortuitous bounce and earned what was the eventual game winner. Thomas slid the puck from an impossible angle, and it caromed off the skate of Martin into the goal, pushing the Komets ahead, 4-3. With time ticking away and Martin on the bench for an extra attacker, Thomas capped off his hat trick with an empty net goal, closing the door on a potential comeback for Kalamazoo. HENEGAR’S LATE WINNER SEALS WINGS’ FIFTH STRAIGHT VICTORY January 29, 2017 For Immediate Release KALAMAZOO, MI— Scott Henegar’s timely tally late in the third period helped the Kalamazoo Wings withstand a comeback bid by the Wheeling Nailers during a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Wings Event Center. Taking advantage of a tired Nailers team who were playing their fourth game in five days, Kalamazoo came storming out of the opening faceoff with an energy that couldn’t be matched. Seven minutes in, the Wings sped ahead on a two-on-one, where Peter Schneider fired a pass along to Lane Scheidl for a wide-open tap in. With time winding down in the first period and killing a penalty, Kalamazoo turned a blocked shot into another odd-man rush down the ice. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Justin Taylor fired a low shot that was kicked away by Wheeling’s Doug Carr and onto the tape of Tyler Biggs for an easy put back goal. Early in the second period, Wheeling came to life and took over the pace of play. Tyler Currier found a soft spot in the Wings defense and fired a one-time feed from Garrett Meurs past Nick Riopel. During the middle stages of the second and leading by a goal, Kalamazoo padded their advantage moments after the expiration of a power play. Taylor settled the puck behind the Nailers’ goal and slid it in front to Blake Kessel, who walked in to wire a one-timer into the net. Less than a minute later, Wheeling clawed back to within a goal of Kalamazoo. Gage Quinney corralled the puck and wrapped it around the net, tucking it inside the post and sending the game into the intermission with a 3-2 score. It took only 41 seconds in the third for Kalamazoo to get back on the board, as Scheidl netted his second of the game and gave Kalamazoo their third two-goal lead of the night. Kyle Blaney shielded the puck from a defender and pushed a tape-to-tape feed along for Scheidl, who found the top corner of the goal for his 16th of the season. Wheeling upped their attack as the period progressed and tallied two goals in two minutes to tie things up at four. Andrew Ammon tapped home a backdoor feed at the 11:30 mark of the third period, and Garret Meurs’ 14th of the year knotted the game with less than seven minutes remaining. With the game stuck in a 4-4 stalemate, rookie Henegar cracked it open with his quick-strike marker with less than five minutes on the clock.
