Why F1 cars now split apart in crashes more than they used to
When the Monaco Grand Prix television coverage cut to the images of Mick Schumacher’s crashed Haas, with the gearbox separated from the car, it looked like a massive accident. It was shocking to see the gearbox, complete with rear suspension, wheels and rear wing, completely detached from the car. So why is such separation happening so frequently, not just to Schumacher but F1 cars in general given there have been partial separations in the case of Yuki Tsunoda’s crash at Imola last year, and Lance Stroll at Mugello in 2020? Jos Verstappen's outburst and Sergio Perez's new contract give Red Bull a problem
For the first time in many years, Red Bull has two Formula 1 drivers in competition. It’s a scenario the team had almost certainly not planned for, and there are already signs of it causing problems. Sergio Perez’s victory in the Monaco Grand Prix came on the weekend he was genuinely faster than team-mate Max Verstappen for the first time. Have we just seen F1's last Monaco Grand Prix?
We hope you savoured every moment of the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix because there’s a chance it will not be on the Formula 1 calendar next year. A return to full fan capacity and a packed roster of VIP guests meant that last weekend Monaco was in greater public demand than it has been for many years. Forget failed Red Bull protest - Ferrari must blame itself for losing F1's Monaco GP
Ferrari only has itself to blame for throwing away what seemed like a certain victory in the Monaco Grand Prix after turning a one-two in the early stages into second and fourth place for Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. Leclerc didn’t even finish on the podium having started from pole position and then led the first 17 laps, thanks to two strategic errors by the Ferrari pitwall. As for Sainz, he had to argue against the incorrect strategy the team tried to put him on - something that might have saved Ferrari from itself but for an inconvenient backmarker getting in the way. Ferrari has a car capable of fighting for the championship, but the lack of sharpness meant that in changeable conditions in Monaco it was out-manouevred by Red Bull. The signs Daniel Ricciardo's McLaren F1 contract could be cut short
Daniel Ricciardo’s move to McLaren in 2021 seemed a match made in heaven between a proven race winner hungry for a shot at the world championship and a legendary team working its way back to being a title contender. The reality has fallen dramatically short of that. Ricciardo struggled last year but hopes things would be different in 2022 have so far proved wide of the mark. How escaping Red Bull has transformed Alex Albon's faltering F1 career
Alex Albon is a completely different driver in 2022 to the one who looked hopelessly lost during his final months with Red Bull Racing two seasons ago. There was an element of risk for Williams in signing him, as despite Albon being highly-regarded as a driver with tremendous ability, he struggled when up against Max Verstappen at Red Bull. The hope was always that Albon’s blend of F1 experience, top-team know-how and determination to reignite his F1 career would coalesce and he’d finally fulfil his prodigious potential in F1. What's really behind F1's weird Lewis Hamilton/Sebastian Vettel/FIA feud
Open defiance from Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel in the wake of an FIA rules clampdown has put a weird Formula 1 feud in the spotlight. The two most decorated drivers on the F1 grid have been the most prominent objectors to the FIA suddenly enforcing long-standing rules on jewellery and flameproof underwear. Hamilton now appears to be locked in a stand-off with the governing body that could result in him eventually being hit with a fine of more than $250,000 every time he drives the car.
