Arsenal complete comeback win over Wolves with two goals in final 14 minutes A pair of late goals, one from Nicolas Pepe and another coming via a Jose Sa own-goal, earned Arsenal a late comeback win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Thursday night in north London. Hwang Hee-Chee had Wolves in front after 10 minutes with a tight-angle finish beyond Aaron Ramsdale, leaving the Gunners to chase the game for the next 72 minutes. - ESPN+ viewers' guide: LaLiga, Bundesliga, MLS, FA Cup, more - Don't have ESPN? Get instant access But Pepe would start the hosts' comeback efforts in the 82nd minute, controlling well to turn and shoot beyond the reach of Sa. A lengthy stoppage around the 90th minute, amid confusion over a Wolves sub, would see six minutes of stoppage time added. That would prove just enough time for the Gunners to snatch all three points. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Alexandre Lacazette shot from a narrow angle, and after a deflection, it found its way into the back of the net to secure Arsenal the unlikeliest of comeback wins. "I feel really happy, it is amazing to win this kind of game in the last minute," Lacazette said. "We really wanted this win because we know it is important to be at the top of the table. "A bit sad [the goal] is not gone down for me, I want to score but most important is to win." The result sees Arsenal leapfrog West Ham United in the table, moving up to fifth, while Wolves remain in seventh ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. If Arsenal do claim fourth place and return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, they may well look back on this victory as the pivotal moment. The Gunners are next in action on March 6, when they visit Watford in the league, while Wolves return to London on Sunday for a Premier League encounter with West Ham.
Bracketology: Wisconsin slips down to a No. 3 seed in updated bracket projection after upset loss to Rutgers This weekend must have been the calm before the storm. Only one team seeded among the top three seeds of a region in Friday's Bracketology projected bracket lost. And what an odd resume that has helped create. Wisconsin lost at home to Rutgers on Saturday, giving the Scarlet Knights their fifth Quad 1 victory of the season and their first away from home. Rutgers now possesses what can only be described as the weirdest resume of a team in contention for a spot in the bracket. The Scarlet Knights are now 5-3 in Q1 games, but also 4-5 against teams in Quads 2-3. Rutgers also has a home loss to NET No. 320 Lafayette. That is likely why the Scarlet Knights' own NET ranking is still in the low 80s. It is not likely Rutgers would be in the tournament if it started today, but the committee would have fun trying to sort them out. The Scarlet Knights will seek a sixth Q1 win on Wednesday when they host Big Ten leader Illinois. Wisconsin, meanwhile, is scuffling a little bit. The Badgers are 4-3 over their last seven games, which include two home losses, one as part of a road-and-road split with Michigan State, and another close call in a two-point win over Penn State. The Badgers have a relatively favorable schedule down the stretch by Big Ten standards, but three of the next four games are on the road. Baylor won on Saturday and replaced Wisconsin as a No. 2 seed, but the win was costly for the Bears. Forward Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua was lost for the season with a knee injury in the victory over Texas. The Bears are at Texas Tech on Wednesday with second place in the Big 12 on the line.
DETROIT -- — Thomas Greiss made 32 saves to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Philadelphia Flyers for the second time in the four days, 4-2 on Saturday. Rookie Moritz Seider scored a big power-play goal in the third period as Detroit won for the third time in four games overall. Tyler Bertuzzi, Filip Zadina and Michael Rasmussen also scored for the Red Wings, and Dylan Larkin had three assists. Greiss hadn't played since Jan. 9. He was in COVID-19 protocol for more than a week last month. “I thought the game was loose at times, but Greiss played really, really well,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. “Obviously, he’d like the one back in the third, but he made up for it right away with a huge save. He came back well after being off for so long. He controlled the game and pucks were sticking to him.” Keith Yandle scored his first goal of the season for Philadelphia. Scott Laughton had a goal and an assist, and Carter Hart stopped 20 shots. The Flyers lost 6-3 to the Red Wings on Wednesday night at Philadelphia. Back home in Detroit, the Red Wings got off to a fast start. Bertuzzi scored his 23rd goal off a Robby Fabbri pass 5:36 into the first period. Zadina made it 2-0 with his sixth goal midway through the second. Larkin carried the puck from his own zone into Flyers territory and dropped it off to Zadina, who wristed a shot from the slot for just his second goal in his last 24 games. Zadina was moved to the first line with Larkin and rookie Lucas Raymond after the All-Star break with the aim of making him more productive. “I played with him last year and he always works hard,” Larkin said. “He’d be the first to admit he has struggled this year but he’s worked hard with us and it is paying off.” The Flyers broke through with 7.5 seconds left in the second on Yandle’s power-play goal, a blast from the point. Philadelphia was 0 for 5 on the power play on Wednesday. Seider fired in a shot from the point at 9:05 of the third during Detroit’s first power-play opportunity. “He’s had a massive impact, and he’s getting better as the season progresses,” Blashill said. “There’s a part of me that wants to underplay his impact, but he’s been a huge part of our success.” Laughton answered less than a minute later with his ninth goal on a rebound. “We skated a lot better, supported the puck and got out of our zone a lot quicker,” Laughton said of the rematch. “Obviously, it's not the result we wanted, it's tough to lose like that but guys were skating and working together. At this point, we've got to keep building on that and hopefully, get something going.” Rasmussen scored an empty-netter to clinch Detroit's victory. “We put ourselves in a position where we could have come back and won this game,” Philadelphia interim coach Mike Yeo said. “We responded all night long, we just didn't find a way to get that tying goal, unfortunately
No Philly Special: Seton Hall falls short at No. 15 Villanova as 3-game winning streak ends PHILADELPHIA -- For Seton Hall, there was no second straight Philly Special at Wells Fargo Center. Want to bet on college basketball? See the best NJ Sports Betting sites Tray Jackson went for 16 points and Kadary Richmond 16 points, five assists and three rebounds but Seton Hall saw their three-game losing streak snapped with a 73-67 loss at No. 15 Villanova before 17,803 fans. The Pirates were attempting to win their second straight in the arena but instead fell to 15-8, 6-7 in the Big East. Alexis Yetna tallied 15 rebounds and six points in the loss and Myles Cale had 11 points. I’m proud of my guys, I’m not frustrated at all,” Pirates coach Kevin Wilard said. “They battled. The atmosphere was great. I thought that’s the loudest I’ve ever heard this building since I’ve been here.” Said Cale: “Coach wasn’t even mad at us when he came back into the locker room. “He said it comes down to that we have two good, great programs going against each other and it comes down to the last few seconds.” Villanova shot 15-of-16 from the foul line while Seton Hall was 8-of-9. “We didn’t get in the bonus,” Willard said. “I haven’t been in the bonus in three games against them.” Villanova (19-6, 12-3) has now won five straight against Seton Hall since Myles Powell and the Pirates beat the Wildcats, 70-64, on Feb. 8, 2020 at Wells Fargo in their first win at Villanova since 1994. The Pirates were looking for their fourth win this season over a Top-25 opponent after previously beating then-No. 4 Michigan on the road in November, then-No. 7 Texas at home December and No. 25 Xavier on Wednesday at home. The Pirates visit No. 24 UConn Wednesday, giving them another golden opportunity to boost their NCAA Tournament résumé. After dropping to a 12 seed on various mock brackets during their recent skid following a COVID-19 pause, the Pirates are currently a 7-seed per ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, and a 9 according to to Mike DeCourcy of Fox. Seton Hall continues to play without Bryce Aiken, who missed his seventh straight game while in concussion protocol. The Pirates are now 4-3 without Aiken. “Obviously, we miss him,” Willard said. Villanova coach Jay Wright said once Seton Hall gets Aiken back, watch out. “They can beat anybody in the country -- and they have,” he said. The Pirates led 32-29 at the break after shooting 7-of-14 from deep. Richmond had 11 points at the break and Cale was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc for nine points. Villanova scored 14 points off nine Seton Hall turnovers. The Pirates were 10-0 when leading at the half. “We just felt like this is going to be grind, like this is going to be a Villanova-Seton Hall game,” Wright said. “But they were really good.” With Villanova up 45-41, the Pirates rattled off an 11-0 spurt -- capped by a 3-pointer from Jamir Harris -- to go ahead 52-45. But the Wildcats answered right back with a 9-0 run capped by a traditional 3-point play from Jermaine Samuels (16 points) to go ahead 54-52. Jackson hit back-to-back threes to turn a 62-57 deficit into a 63-62 lead with 3:16 remaining. A Justin Moore three put the Wildcats up 67-65 with 2:10 remaining. After Jackson hit two free throws to tie it at 67, Brandon Slater (10 points) got free for a layup off a Collin Gillespie pass to make it 69-67. Seton Hall turned it over when Jared Rhoden touched the ball going out of bounds and Moore hit two free throws to stretch it to 71-67 with 16.5 left. “They made two huge plays on the offensive glass,” Willard said. “Give them credit, they made two huge offensive plays.” Richmond was then whistled for a travel on Seton Hall’s next possession. Moore (16 points) hit two more free throws to make it 73-67. “I’m proud of this team, I love their effort,” Willard said. “You have to give them credit, they made two huge plays.” The Pirates now head to visit Dan Hurley and UConn on Wednesday (8:30 p.m., CBSSN). The Huskies first visit St. John’s Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust. Please consider supporting NJ.com with a subscription. UP FOR THE CUP Ecuador 0-1 Brazil LIVE SCORE: World Cup qualifying chaos with TWO red cards and overturned penalty – Stream, TV channel ECUADOR have had a nightmare start on a huge day for them against Brazil. The Ecuadorians sit in third place and are close to World Cup qualification. But Casemiro bundled Brazil ahead early on as they look to maintain their unbeaten record. And to make matters worse, Ecuador's goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez has been sent off for a high boot on Matheus Cunha. But in a moment of stupidity for Emerson Royal, things were evened up as the Brazilian got a second yellow for a clumsy challenge. Minutes later, Alisson thought he was the match's third red card for a high boot, but after a VAR review the referee changed his decision to a booking. Alisson continued to struggle in the second half when he fumbled the ball, allowing the hosts to smash it into the net. However, he was saved by the referee's whistle as the linesman had already flagged to say the ball had gone out of play. VAR was then called into action a third time when referee Wilmar Roldan awarded Ecuador a penalty, but after review the decision given against Raphinha was overturned.
