EP.148.0 10-09-2011 QMJHL Saint John Sea Dogs VS Victoriaville Tigres

Audio provided by Tim Roszell News 88.9 The Saint John Sea Dogs beat the Victoriaville Tigres 6-2 Sunday in a highly entertaining, physical affair between two competitive rivals. The Tigres had topped Saint John 7-0 in Victoriaville last weekend to add another chapter to the rivalry that has seen the Dogs eliminate them in the past two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs. The Sea Dogs responded with an inspired effort Sunday, led by first star Jonathan Huberdeau, who enjoyed his second multi-point game in as many nights, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Second star Ryan Tesink scored twice, while Zack Phillips, Nathan Beaulieu and third star Charles Roussel tallied a goal and an assist each. Stephen MacAulay chipped in two assists and Mathieu Corbeil made 25 saves for the win. Stefan Fournier and Pierre-Luc Pelletier scored for the Tigres and David Honzik made 27 saves in the loss The win was Saint John's fifth straight at home, as the Sea Dogs improved to 7-4, while Victoriaville fell to 8-4. The Dogs opened the scoring on a 4-on-4 at 5:39 of the first period. Roussel made a nice move to cut in from the right point and around a defender, then ripped a wrist shot off the crossbar that bounced right to Huberdeau for his first of the year. Phillips recorded the other assist. Beaulieu, who was in the box during the 4-on-4, jumped out just in time to join the play and tuck in a rebound to make it 2-0 at 7:32. Danick Gauthier and Tomas Jurco assisted on the goal, Beaulieu's second of the season. Roussel, the 20-year-old defenceman who made his Sea Dogs debut Saturday, gave the crowd a taste of his open-ice hitting ability on the following shift, levelling Francois Godin in the defensive zone to set up a chance for Gauthier at the other end. Gauthier tangled with Victoriaville captain Phillip Danault with eight minutes to go in the first, one of two fights in the frame, and three on the night. Huberdeau had a chance short-handed on 3-on-1 with less than three minutes to go, but lost the handle. Fournier scored later in the power play, at 17:54, to cut the lead in half. Beaulieu and Tigres scoring leader Yanni Gourde then engaged in fisticuffs at centre ice with 90 seconds to go in the opening frame. Phillips had a chance to restore the two-goal margin in the first minute of the second period, ripping a wrist shot off the post from low in the left-wing circle. He would not be denied a few minutes later, however, as he dangled to his forehand in tight and roofed a shot to Honzik's glove side to make it 3-1. Huberdeau had the lone assist on the goal, the fourth of the year for Phillips. The posts were a magnet for Sea Dogs shots on this afternoon, as Pierre Durepos fired a wrist shot off the iron shortly after the Phillips goal. Saint John then faced a tough test, as Ian Saab was ejected for boarding and fighting Simon Darveau, leaving his teammates to kill a full seven-minute power play. The Dogs didn't just survive the penalty kill, they thrived, with Huberdeau feeding Tesink a beautiful backhand saucer pass to set up a short-handed goal at 7:31. Kevin Gagne picked up the other assist. The great penalty killing continued, including big shot blocks by Tesink and Jason Cameron, and many in the crowd of 3,141 gave their team a standing ovation for the outstanding effort. Victoriaville cut the lead to 4-2 at 17:54 of the second. Corbeil appeared to have the puck frozen, but there was no whistle, and Pelletier was allowed to knock it in as the goaltender lifted his glove. Corbeil came up with a huge save early in the third, stopping Vincent Marcoux from point-blank range. On the same shift, the Dogs went the other way and scored, with Beaulieu unloading a low shot from the left point that Tesink got a piece of to make it 5-2. MacAulay picked up the other assist on the goal, Tesink's second of the night and third of the season. Roussel rounded out the scoring with his second in as many nights at 18:02 of the final frame, with assists from MacAulay and Pierre Durepos.

They sit one win short of the record of 58 established by the Sorel Eperviers in 70 games in 1973-74 and matched by the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs in 72 games in 1978-79. The Dogs also ran their home record to 31-0-1-1 and could become the first team in QMJHL history to go undefeated at home in regulation time. Kelly, who skated on a line with Jason Cameron and Marshall Worden, drew Saint John's third power play of the game on the trio's first shift at 6:28 of the first period. Head Coach Gerard Gallant left the line on the ice for the power play and they rewarded him with the game's first goal, Kelly's sixth of the season at 7:30. Kelly converted the rebound of a shot from the right point by Durepos. Worden, making his Sea Dogs debut after being recalled from the Miramichi Timberwolves, drew the other assist. Galiev made it 2-0 with his 35th of the year at 17:54. After misfiring a pass on a 3-on-0 with Danick Gauthier and MacAulay. Galiev went back to his own end to collect the puck. The Russian forward showed off his high-end skill, rushing through the defense and finishing with a tight stickhandling move and high shot to the short side. Durepos had the lone assist on the play. Beauregard then made it 3-0 at 18:07 after some great work behind the net by Tesink. The feisty Saint John native won the puck and passed it out front to Beauregard who surprised Hayes for his 11th of the season, with MacAulay recording the other assist. MacAulay rounded out the first period summary with his 15th of the year at 18:46, establishing a new Sea Dogs record for the three fastest goals (52 seconds). Tesink's hard work was a factor again as he found MacAulay in front despite being down on the ice. Kevin Gagne had the other assist. The Eagles switched goaltenders to start the second, but the Dogs picked up where they left off as Gauthier ran the lead to 5-0 at 5:59 of the middle frame. Tomas Jurco and Eric Gelinas recorded the assists on the goal, Gauthier's 11th of the season. Worden continued to earn the accolades of the Harbour Station fans, dropping the gloves with Cape Breton's Blake Millman at 8:20 of the second. Shaw got the Eagles back within four with his 25th of the year on a power play at the 14-minute mark. The Dogs erased any doubts about the outcome with two more goals early in the third. Galiev notched his second, and 36th of the year, at 4:03, with assists from Zack Phillips and Jonathan Huberdeau. Anthony made it 7-1 with his 23rd of the season on a power play at 6:46, with helpers from Nathan Beaulieu and Gauthier.

On a night that started with the Sea Dogs receiving the Brunswick News Rivalry Cup for the first time, Stanislav Galiev capped it with the overtime winner 16 seconds into the extra frame. Danick Gauthier, Michael Kirkpatrick, Jonathan Huberdeau and third star Mike Thomas also scored as the Dogs remained undefeated on home ice in regulation time. Nathan Beaulieu had two assists and was named first star. Mathieu Corbeil's 23 saves were enough for the win before a sellout crowd of 6,428, as the Sea Dogs improved to 52-6-1-2 (including eight wins over the Wildcats and a 29-0-1-1 home mark). Second star Ted Stephens led the Wildcats with two goals and an assist, Marek Hrivik had a goal and two assists and Cole MacMillan added a single. Brandon Thibeau made 31 saves as the Cats fell to 30-22-3-7. Brunswick News editor-in-chief Rob Warner presented the Brunswick News Rivalry Cup to the Sea Dogs before the game. The teams then exchanged four rebound goals in the first 12 minutes of a scrambly first period. Gauthier opened the scoring with his 10th of the year, from Alexandre Beauregard and Ryan Tesink, at 2:06, then MacMillan made it 1-1 at 4:12. Kirkpatrick's 29th put the Dogs back in the lead on a power play at 8:23, with assists from Beaulieu and Huberdeau, but Hrivik's 34th drew Moncton back even on another power play at 11:51. Huberdeau's 37th came on yet another man advantage at 14:21. It was the prettiest of the period, and sent Saint John into the intermission with a 3-2 lead. Beaulieu made an incredible move to keep the puck in at the left point, then fired a precise pass across the zone through two defenders to Huberdeau down low. Saint John's leading scorer buried for his second point of the night, giving him 93, just two short of Chris DiDomenico's single-season Sea Dogs record. The first half of the second period was scoreless, but once again a power play proved to be the difference, with Stephens scoring on a long shot that eluded Corbeil at 12:06. But Thomas put the Dogs back in front, as he took advantage of a Moncton turnover in the zone and roofed a wrist shot high to Thibeau's glove side to make it 4-3. The goal, the 14th of the year for Thomas, was unassisted. The Thomas goal looked like it might stand as the winner, but Stephens fired home his second at 15:37 of the third to send the game to extra time. With everyone on both benches standing for overtime, Galiev scored his 32nd of the year on the first shift, just 16 seconds in, with assists from Simon Despres and Tomas Jurco.

SEA DOGS IMPROVE TO 17-0-0-1 AT HOME WITH 5-3 WIN OVER MOOSEHEADS The Saint John Sea Dogs wrapped up their opening-half home schedule by earning a hard-fought victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Halifax Mooseheads by a score of 5-3 to improve to 17-0-0-1 at Harbour Station and a 27-4-0-2 overall on the season. Jonathan Huberdeau (2), Zack Phillips, Mike Thomas, and Kevin Gagné all scored for Saint John in their fifth win of the year over Halifax, with overage goaltender Jacob DeSerres making a season-high 43 saves in picking up the 11th victory of his season. At the other end of the ice, Trey Lewis, Luca Ciampini, and Darcy Ashley found the back of the net for the Mooseheads while Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Mathieu Corbeil stopped 30 shots in a losing effort for the Maritime Division's sixth-place team. Saint John drew first blood on Sunday as sophomore sniper Zack Phillips one-timed a spectacular feed from Steven Anthony to the back of the Mooseheads' net in the 13th minute of play to register his 23rd goal of the season. Phillips then set a side-of-the-net-lurking Jonathan Huberdeau up for a tap-in tally a moment later, doubling his team's scoreboard advantage in the process. Veteran defenseman Kevin Gagné put the hosts up 3-0 five minutes into the second period, ripping a wrist shot past Corbeil from the slot area to make the fourth goal of his season of the power play variety. The Mooseheads responded with a man-up marker of their own at the 14:34 mark of the middle frame, with Darcy Ashley shoveling home a rebound produced by a Carl Gelinas point shot. A long-range slap shot off the stick of Trey Lewis reduced the visitors' deficit to one at the 5:09 mark of the third period, but Huberdeau's second tally of the match gave the home team a two-goal cushion ten minutes later. Team Captain Mike Thomas then added a short-handed empty-net marker to give the Sea Dogs a three-goal lead in the final minute of play, with a relatively meaningless offensive strike from rookie forward Luca Ciampini following shortly thereafter to make the final score Saint John 5 -- Halifax 3.

After neither team managed to find the back of the net over the course of a back-and-forth opening thirty minutes of play, sophomore defenseman Gabriel Bourret beat Terenzio on a long-distance wrist shot midway through the second period to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Second-year sniper Zack Phillips doubled Saint John's advantage one minute later, wisely electing to shoot on an odd-man rush and rifling his first goal of the year past Terenzio's flailing glove hand. The Sea Dogs went up 3-0 courtesy of dynamic offensive specialist Jonathan Huberdeau, who took a feed from wily playmaker Michael Kirkpatrick deep in Mooseheads territory and proceeded to slide a nifty backhand shot across Halifax's goal line to make the third marker of his season of the man-up variety. Karel St-Laurent came up with a big pad save in the 35th minute of play, denying import winger Martin Frk from point-blank range to keep his team's three-goal lead in tact. Rookie forward Ryan Tesink put the hosts up by four a moment later, beating Terenzio blocker-side on a bullet of a wrist shot to improve his 2010-11 goals total to three. Star centre Michael Kirkpatrick put the Herd's comeback attempt on ice at the 57:55 mark of the match however, converting on a breakaway after being set up nicely by linemate Ryan Tesink. Kirkpatrick (1G-2A-3P), Tesink (1G-2A-3P), and Huberdeau (1G-1A-2P) ended up combining to produce eight points on the evening in leading their team to a hard-fought home victory.

EP.57.0 SEA DOGS VS WILDCATS

SEA DOGS EARN 3-2 COMEBACK WIN OVER WILDCATS The second game of the 2009-10 Brunswick News Rivalry Cup Challenge was staged at Harbour Station on Saturday night, with another thrilling contest between the Saint John Sea Dogs and Moncton Wildcats taking place as the regional adversaries each gave a 110% effort throughout what was a thoroughly entertaining hockey game. After battling to a 2-2 deadlock over the course of sixty minutes of intense back-and-forth action, star Sea Dogs winger Mike Hoffman netted an instant-victory-clinching goal on the first shot of overtime to send the nearly five thousand fans in attendance into a frenzy as the Port Citys major junior squad captured their second extra-time home win of the year versus their archrivals. Jonathan Huberdeau and Gabriel Bourret also scored for Saint John on Saturday, with Matthew Bissonnette and Alex Saulnier responding for Moncton in a losing effort. Marc-Antoine Gelinas picked up his sixth win of the year between the pipes for the home team, making 18 saves in a relief appearance while not allowing a single goal in 40+ minutes of action. Louis Dominigue, meanwhile, suffered his fifth loss of 2009-10 between the pipes for Moncton, surrendering three goals on 34 shots faced. In addition to capturing two Rivalry Cup points in recognition of their outstanding on-ice performance, the Sea Dogs picked up and additional 1.5 points on the night. The crowd of 4,720 earned Saint John 0.5 while Fleaburns victory over Wild Willie in a first intermission mascot race tallied another. Saint John now leads the season-long competition 5.5 - 2 overall. After rookie forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Alex Saulnier exchanged goals to kick the evening off, Moncton took a 2-1 lead late in period number one when Matthew Bissonnette beat starting Sea Dogs goalie Karel St-Laurent after taking a pass from import winger Kirill Kabanov in Saint John territory. Marc-Antoine Gelinas took over for St-Laurent at the start of the second period, coming up with some big saves throughout the stanza to appropriate a significant amount of momentum for his team. At the 17:40 mark of the middle frame, Gabriel Bourret wired a shot the beat Domingue high, glove side to register the first goal of his QMJHL career at a highly-opportune time. Nick Petersen and Kevin Gagné both picked up assists on the timely offensive strike, which evened the score up at two apiece as Saturdays intraprovincial contest reached the second intermission. Neither team managed to break the deadlock throughout what was a gritty third period, resultantly sending the showdown into overtime. On the very first shift of the extra frame, overage forward Mike Hoffman beat Domingue on a wrist shot to send the Harbour Station faithful home happy as Saint John leapfrogged the idle P.E.I. Rocket to take second place in the QMJHL Atlantic.
