Athletes Village - 28th Winter Universiade, Almaty, Kazakhstan

Almaty - Capacity: 5000 The Athletes’ village will be opened to athletes and officials on January 23, 2017 until February 10, 2017. Total area: 24,41 hа. Total built-up area: 23 977,66 m2 Athletes Village – consist of 14 buildings and 3 blocks placed in the form of letter “U” (Universiade). According to architectural idea, all objects form an image of sun god known from the ancient rock paintings. The main administrative center is located between 14-storey residential buildings which includes operational block where during the Universiade – FISU office, dining room for 1000 people, resting room will be located. It will also include Museum of traditional musical instruments with the use of interactive technologies. Day 3 Finals 2 - 4th World University Rowing Championship 2016 - Poznan

POZNAN - Sunday 4 September the 14th World University Rowing Championship on the Malta Regatta course in Poznan came to an end. The medallists of 15 categories have been decorated with medals. Host team Poland end first in the team medal classification with 9 medals, including one gold, six silver and two bronze medals. Italy ended second and Czech Republic third. Sunday’s session was initiated with mix quadruple sculls – a competition that has been organised for the first time in the history of this WUC. This inaugural race was won by the Czech crew (Kristyna Fleisnnerova, Lenka Antosova, Adam Sterbak and Matyas Klang) who beat the Polish hosts (Marta Wieliczko, Katarzyna Wełna, Maciej Zawojski, Szymon Płośnik). Bronze went to France (Chloe Poumailloux, Flavie Bahuaud, Bastien Quiqueret, and Hugo Quemener). In the B Finals, Poland was represented by two crews. Syliwa Zimnicka has firmly won the B final of lightweight women’s single sculls, Michał Baran and Mateusz Drab were 5th in the B final lightweight men’s double sculls. In the grand final for lightweight women’s sculls Australian Amy James was medalled with gold. After a fantastic finish the silver medal was won by Austrian Anja Manoutschehr, with bronze going to Canadian Patricia Mara. The title of World University Rowing Champion in lightweight men’s sculls has been claimed by Federico Gherzi. The silver medal went to former Summer Universiade Champion (2015) Jerzy Kowalski (POL). Hungarian, Daniel Matyasovszki got the bronze. In the final of lightweight Men’s double sculls German crew Johannes Ursprung and Cedric Kulbach, rowed to 1st place, followed by Slovaks Peter Zelinka and Richard Vanco, leaving bronze for French crew Francois Teroin and Luke Epain. Unfortunately, the challenge of defending their world title has become a failure for Martyna Mikołajczak and Monika Kowalska in lightweight women’s double sculls. The Polish crew were placed 4th. Italians Federica Cesarini and Valentina Rodini secured the championship. Silver medal went to Russians Anastasija Lebedeva and Anastasiia Ianina while Germans Kathrin Morbe and Katrin Thoma finished 3rd. In the women’s quadruple the Germans (Clara Redetzki, Friederike Reissig, Charlotte Reinhardt, Conastanze Duell) took the gold. Silver went to Cecilia Bellati, Benedetta Bellio, Stefania Gobbi, Kimi English Hawke. The third crew to cross the finish line were the British rowers Rebecca Edwards, Annie Withers, Catherine Sheehan and Gillian Cooper. The women’s singles World University Champion title went to German Julia Leiding, who was ahead of Austrian Lisa Farthofer and Irish Monika Dukarska. The men’s single final was dominated by this year’s junior World Champion Michal Plocek (CZE). Dominik Czaja won another medal for Poland Maximilian Fraenkel secured third place. The medal rivalry in the women’s double sculls was won by Czechs Lenka Antosova and Kristyna Fleissnerova. The silver medal was taken by Olga Michałkiewicz and Katarzyna Zillmann (POL). Bronze went to Rosa Bas and Roos De Jong (NED). In men’s double sculls the world champion title went to Germans Timo Piontek and Stephan Krueger. The Polish crew (Dawid Grabowski and Adam Wicenciak) ended second. Third place was claimed by Czechs Adam Sterbak and Matyas Klang. In the men’s eight race, the first place was secured by the British rowers. Second place was taken by the French. The podium was completed with the Polish crew. A Swedish final day - 20th World University Orienteering Championship 2016 - Miskolc

Miskolc - Since the beginning of the 20th World University Orienteering Championship, Sweden was regularly favourite for the events held in the Hungarian forest, and on this closing day, this reputation was proved as deserved. In the men’s competition, Andersson, Sjöberg and Runesson, all medallist in the individual event won the men’s relay with not far from 3 minutes difference on the Swiss team. Meier, Hägler and Schneider concluded their WUC with an additional medal for Switzerland while Finland (Simosas, Heinaro and Siren) grabbed the bronze medal, first one for the Finnish males. In the women’s competition, here again, no major surprise. Tjernlund, Karlsson and Forsgren (SWE) took the gold medal one minute ahead of a Czech team including Indrakova, Knapova but especially Kosova who won her fourth medal in five races. Behind those two teams, the battle for bronze saw Norway (Alexandersen, Benjaminsen and Myhre) beat Russia and Great Britain in a final sprint. The event was then concluded by the closing ceremony attended by the deputy minister of sport of Hungary and followed by a race of the team and competition officials. Day one - 10th World University Karate Championship 2016 - Braga

Braga - The 10th World University Karate Championship began yesterday with Kata’s trial, in which over 50 athletes stepped in the Tatami looking for the decisive final matches in the category. On the individual Kata competitions, Hiroki Kubo (Japan) and Mohammed El-Hanni (Morocco) were the ones who caught the passport for the male final as well as the female athletes, Misaki Tanaka (Japan) and Sakura Kokumai (USA): the decisive matches will take place on Friday afternoon at 5.30 pm. Also, Portugal, Czech Republic, Egypt and France will fight for the 3rd place on Friday afternoon at 3 pm. On the male category, the match that will decide the 3rd place will be disputed by athletes of France, Spain, Slovakia and Russia. During the afternoon, the UMinho Sports Hall held the individual Kumite eliminatories, as well as the semi-finals and repechages. On the male side, the ‘karate kids’ competed as full grown men, showing determination and emotion, as well as a big respect for the opponent on the Tatami. In all five individual Kumite challenges (-84kg, +84kg, -75kg, -67kg and -60kg) there were 88 athletes looking for a place on the podium. On the female side, the same aim. About 80 athletes were on competition this Wednesday, trying to get the best result on the competition for their countries.
