Vernon Philander and Pieter Malan both hit centuries and shared a record stand in a dominant second day of the 4-Day Domestic Series for the Cape Cobras against the Dolphins in Cape Town on Tuesday. The pair put on 228 for the sixth wicket – smashing the previous mark of 176 by Ryan Canning and Owais Shah set in 2010/11 – as the hosts reached stumps on 317 for eight, a lead of 92. Proteas all-rounder Philander continued an impressive return from injury with his third career century, a patient 104 (228 balls, 13 fours), while Malan, who is turning out to be a run machine again this season, eventually fell for 153 (296 balls, 21 fours). They batted for almost the entire day together and wrestled away the strong position held by the visitors at the start. The Durbanites had the log leaders at their mercy early on after reducing them from their overnight 45 for four to 65 for five by the sixth over of day two. However, it was one-way traffic from there as the Dolphins struggled to break through the stubborn Malan-Philander stand that lasted well over 70 overs. It eventually was broken in the 94th over of the innings when Kerwin Mungroo (2/94) struck, with the same bowler then nabbing a second wicket by getting Dane Piedt (4). Having completed his 29th first-class century, the resilient Malan eventually fell to Okuhle Cele (3/49) in the penultimate over of the day, although the home side was still powerfully placed at Newlands. Action from day one of the 4-Day Franchise Series match between the Cape Cobras and the Dolphins at Newlands in Cape Town. Mthiwekhaya Nabe claimed a career-best and maiden five-wicket haul for the Cape Cobras before Robbie Frylinck’s three-for helped the Hollywoodbets Dolphins storm back at the end of day one of their 4-Day Domestic Series clash in Cape Town on Monday. Rising young fast bowler Nabe claimed five for 60 as the visitors were bowled out for a seemingly below-par 225, but veteran Frylinck’s three for 20 sent the hosts tumbling to stumps at 45 for four. It meant the log leaders still trailed by 180 when an early close was drawn due to bad light at Newlands. For the KwaZulu-Natal side, their strong fightback represented good character after the doom and gloom they found themselves in early on day one. After throwing away a good opportunity to win their first match of the season when they went down to the Warriors in Durban last week, they again started poorly in the Mother City. The returning Proteas Test star Vernon Philander (2-34), fit again after being sidelined with an ankle injury since the tour to Sri Lanka back in July, struck in the third over by removing Vaughn van Jaarsveld for six. Top scorer Cody Chetty, who made 71 (10 balls, 14 fours), fought back with Sarel Erwee during a 75-run second wicket stand, but that ended on 90 when Nabe nabbed his first wicket by trapping the latter leg before wicket for 35. It was a regular loss of wickets from there as Nabe proved the thorn with his best figures since his four for 48 for Western Province against KwaZulu-Natal Inland in three-day cricket. He was well supported by Philander, who sent down 14.3 overs, Dane Piedt (1-25), Dane Paterson (1-44) and Tladi Bokako (1-53). Frylinck then dismissed Janneman Malan (6), Zubayr Hamza (17) and the in-form David Bedingham (0) – the latter two in success deliveries – to rock the Cobras. Okuhle Cele (1-5) added the scalp of Aviwe Mgijima, also for a duck, with Pieter Malan (18) left fighting a lone battle at the close.

Shabnim Ismail and Trisha Chetty are in the Proteas Women squad for the first ever stand-alone ICC Women’s World T20 to be held in the West Indies from 9-24 November 2018. The sixth edition of the 10-team tournament will take place across three venues – Antigua, Saint Lucia and Guyana. The selectors have kept the bulk of the squad that recently completed a tour of the Windies, with the return of stalwarts Ismail and Chetty to finish off the dangerous-looking squad. Fast bowler Ayabonga Khaka has not sufficiently recovered from her shoulder surgery and was not considered for selection. Three of the four newest members of the team that toured the West Indies have also received the nod. Tumi Sekhukhune, Robyn Searle and Saarah Smith will make their World Cup debuts. It will be a doubly exciting tournament with the Decision Review System (DRS) being used in an ICC World T20 for the very first time. South Africa will play in Group A in St Lucia against defending champions West Indies, England, Sri Lanka and World Cup Qualifier winners Bangladesh. Group B comprises Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland. ‘Good luck to our Proteas Ladies as they head for the West Indies with high expectations for the ICC Women’s World T20,’ commented CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe. ‘They reached the semi-final of this tournament in Bangladesh in 2014 and came agonisingly close to a first appearance in a final in last year’s ICC Women’s World Cup in England. ‘The time has now arrived for them to take that next step forward and get into the championship match. They can take a lot of justifiable confidence out of their recently completed tour of the West Indies where they drew both the ODI and T20 Series against their hosts who are the defending champions for the ICC World T20. ‘They also had to make do without a number of key players. From CSA’s perspective, we have left no stone unturned in our support for Dane [van Niekerk] and her team to put them on the same level of preparation as our Proteas’ men’s team,’ concluded Moroe.
