Episode Forty-Two: Recovery Saves and Blocks This two part drill see's the goalkeeper work on low diving recovery saves. The exercise helps to highlight the need to get up from the floor quickly and moves the goalkeepers position to then make the diving save. Reiterate the importance of good footwork (Short and Sharpe) and when diving, leading with both hands to attack the ball. It will be easy to lead with one hand to make a save but make it understood that the catch is the desired outcome. Once you are happy with the drill, progress to a scenario based exercise. Place a ball 5 yards in front of the opposite marker that the goalkeeper is lying at. This will be used as a 50/50 ball for the goalkeeper to challenge the coach once they have made the initial save. I like to use the marker for the goalkeeper to touch first as this changes the angle of approach. This can be removed which means the goalkeeper goes straight for the 50/50 after the initial save. I feel using the marker can act as a green light, meaning the coach can not run until the goalkeeper has touched the marker. Feel free to use both options and let me know what works best for you? The 50/50 ball is then used for the goalkeeper to determine whether they attack the ball by diving at the coaches feet or stay big and wide and block the shot. Hence, the scenario of saving the initial shot and getting up from the floor to save the rebound.
