GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Backup Kylil Carter threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, Timadre Abram intercepted a pass in the end zone as time expired and North Carolina A&T upset ECU 28-23 on Sunday for its 14th straight victory. The game was postponed Saturday because of two lightning delays. Defending MEAC champion N.C. A&T (2-0) beat an FBS program for the third straight season. ECU lost a season-opening home game to an FCS team for the second straight year, after falling to James Madison last season. ECU started a drive at the N.C. A&T 27 with 4:10 left in the game, but went four-and-out after electing not to go for a field goal. The Pirates got the ball back with 2:07 remaining at its 37 with no timeouts and drove down the field but wasted too much time before being forced into a Hail Mary play. Carter was 7 of 9 for 93 yards and two scores for N.C. A&T, which beat FCS power Jacksonville State last week. Carter connected with Zachary Leslie for a one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone to give N.C. A&T a 21-20 fourth-quarter lead -- it's first since 7-3. Elijah Bell caught a short pass, broke a tackle and ran for a 17-yard score for a 28-23 Aggie lead -- the third lead change of the fourth quarter. Reid Herring made his first career start for East Carolina and threw for 304 yards, and two touchdowns and two interceptions. Visit TheAmerican.org for more information.
TULSA, Okla. -- Luke Skipper threw two touchdowns and ran for another as Tulsa opened the season with a 38-27 victory over Central Arkansas on Saturday night. It had been a see-saw affair until a fumble on the kickoff resulted in a Tulsa touchdown two plays later to give the Golden Hurricane a double-digit lead. Cedric Battle failed to pull in the kick off and Bryson Powers recovered for Tulsa. Shamari Brooks, who finished with 129 yards on 27 carries, charged in from the 1 with 7:36 remaining to secure the win. Skipper had just hit Cole Neph on a 14-yard scoring strike to retake the lead. The Golden Hurricane kept Central Arkansas off the board for the final 11 minutes. Corey Taylor II rushed for 110 yards to give Tulsa two runners over the century mark. UCA's Breylin Smith threw for 165 yards.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Playing just the first half, Brady White threw for 358 yards and five touchdowns in his Memphis debut and the Tigers defeated Mercer 66-14 in the season opener for both teams Saturday. Memphis tied a program record with 56 points in the first half and White completed 22 of 28 passes. The Tigers scored seven touchdowns on their first seven possessions, and T.J. Carter had a 35-yard pick-6 intercepting Kaelan Riley. The Tigers set a school record with 752 total yards of offense, good for third on the American Athletic Conference single-game chart. Robert Riddle threw two late touchdowns for Mercer, which had 174 yards of total offense. White, a graduate transfer from Arizona State, played three games for the Sun Devils in 2016 before a foot injury sidelined him for the remainder of that year and all of 2017 and he has two years of eligibility. Memphis coach Mike Norvell was the Sun Devils' offensive coordinator when White began his college career at ASU.
