In 1983, Roberto Cabañas scored one of the great goals in the history of the North American Soccer League with a flying scorpion kick against the Tulsa Roughnecks. The Cosmos return to the playing field for the first time in nearly 30 years on Aug. 3 at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium when they face their old rivals, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. On Aug. 17, 1977, Giorgio Chinaglia scored the equalizing goal against Gordon Banks to help the Cosmos advance over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the NASL Division Championship. The Cosmos would go on to win the NASL Championship that year, beating the Seattle Sounders in Soccer Bowl '77 in Portland in Pelé's final competitive game.
