The 2016/17 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season begins later this month. Here is a preview of 5 of the 6 teams in the Maritime (Atlantic Division). Charlottetown Islanders, Moncton Wildcats, Saint John Sea Dogs, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and Acadie-Bathurst Titan. There will be a Moosehead preview coming as well. The teams have not yet finalized their rosters for the coming season but John Moore spoke with the coaches and general managers about the type of team they hope to ice later this month. Wyllum Deveaux is preparing for his first season with Tri City Storm of the United States Hockey League. The Nova Scotia native was with Don Mills Flyers last season and is home for the summer and has committed to Harvard pursuing NCAA opportunity. John Moore caught up with the Bedford, NS native.
Lac St-Louis Lions forward Mathias Laferriere has had a tremendous post season and is a top prospect for the 2016 QMJHL draft. Laferriere was the top scorer at the 2016 Telus Cup and was also named the tournament MVP. His offensive numbers just kept improving all season long. During the regular season in the Quebec AAA Midget Hockey League he averaged .5 points a game, during the regular season, he jumped to 1.5 points per game and at the Telus Cup, it was 2.1 points per game. Saint John Vitos winger Anderson MacDonald is projected to be a 1st round pick in the 2016 QMJHL draft in Charlottetown in June. The Saint John Vitos forward lead his team in scoring and helped the Vitos capture a silver medal at the Telus Cup. UNB Varsity Reds captured the 2016 University Cup in Halifax Sunday night. Moments after the Varsity Reds won the Cup, Captain Cameron Critchlow led Jesse MacFarlane onto the ice to celebrate with the team. Summerside native, MacFarlane was involved in a near fatal car accident 2 summers ago and suffered a severe brain injury. He has made a remarkable recovery since coming out of a coma. He continues to rehab in Fredericton and many believe he is close to speaking for the first time since the accident. He did not miss a UNB playoff game this year and the team has rallied around the former hockey player. It was an emotional moments for the player and the Prince Edward Island native. He is greeted and hugged by the players including Gardner MacDougall's son, Taylor.
UNB Varisty Reds are the 2016 University Cup champions as they defeated St FX 3-1 before 10,000 plus at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax NS. Here are highlgihts and post game on ice interviews with captain Cameron Critchlow and Randy Gazzola.
St. FX X-Men advance to the University Cup final after Michael Clarke scored a power play goal in triple overtime, giving the team a 2-1 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Drew Owsley finished the game with 55 saves.
Cody Donaghey's first game as a Moncton Wildcat was against his old team, the Halifax Mooseheads at Scotiabank Centre. Donaghey was dealt to the Wildcats for Michael O'Leary and 2 draft picks.
