Could the Lakers be the best defensive team in the NBA this season? Anthony Davis is excelling on both ends of the floor as he’s averaging almost 30 points per game and just had a 40 rebound, 20 block game against the Grizzlies. Could AD win MVP? If LeBron James and Anthony Davis get some consistency from the Lakers’ guards, this team will be hard to beat especially if Dwight Howard continues to play at a high level. LeBron James and Anthony Davis have both been very good to start this season. But what about the rest of the Lakers starting five? Avery Bradley and Danny Green have plugged in nicely, but Javale McGee has been underwhelming at the center position. Dwight Howard might take his starting spot. The Lakers’ bench has been inconsistent, but overall pretty good. Look for that unit to improve once Rajon Rondo and Kyle Kuzma get back and healthy. The Los Angeles Lakers’ season is three games in now after they defeated the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are beginning to look like the powerful duo that everyone expected them to be, but the Lakers are still missing a big piece of their offense. Kyle Kuzma has been sidelined with a stress reaction in his ankle, but progress is being made in his rehab. Kuzma is now competing in 4-on-4 scrimmages and may be moving onto 5-on-5 soon. Boogie Cousins was signed to a one-year deal as a free agent this past summer, but he tore his ACL in a scrimmage during the offseason. Lakers’ head coach Frank Vogel has said that he is not closing the door on a potential return for Cousins near the end of the season. It may be a long shot, but if DeMarcus Cousins can get back to his old self before the playoffs roll around for the Lakers, this team could find themselves with a new big three of Anthony Davis, LeBron James and DeMarcus Cousins. However, they might have to wait. Davis injured his thumb in the first quarter of the second game vs. the Brooklyn Nets and was diagnosed with a grade 1 thumb sprain. Anthony Davis is set to receive an MRI for more details on what is wrong but worst-case scenario Davis could miss around a month. The Lakers will look to bounce back in a big way when they face the Golden State Warriors today. Steph Curry and Co. are 1-1 this preseason, with a loss to the Lakers and a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Steph Curry looked like, well, Steph Curry against the Timberwolves, accounting for 40 points.
