Yanks needed win -- historic outing seals one Green's perfect 3-inning, 6-K save ends with immaculate frame against Mets Chad Green reared back and dotted the top of the strike zone, a heater that Jonathan Villar waved at. The Yankees reliever pounded his right fist into his glove, perhaps not realizing that he’d just completed an immaculate inning, but well aware that it had been an important performance. Following an afternoon in which the Yankees blew a late lead and weathered one of their most deflating defeats of the season, Green helped restore order. The right-hander’s three perfect innings sealed a 4-2 victory over the Mets, as the Yanks took the nightcap of Sunday’s Subway Series seven-inning doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. With fireworks echoing around the South Bronx, Green struck out Michael Conforto, pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil and Villar on nine pitches in the breezy seventh. According to STATS, Green became the first pitcher in the Modern Era (since 1900) to pitch three perfect innings, strike out six batters and have an immaculate inning in the same game. Green tossed two pitches in Game 1 of the twin bill, before yielding to closer Aroldis Chapman, who blew a save opportunity in a 10-5 loss that saw the Mets bat around for six seventh-inning runs. The Yankees bounced back, as Gio Urshela slugged an opposite-field three-run blast off Corey Oswalt that provided most of their offensive production, supporting a strong spot start by Nestor Cortes Jr. Described by Boone as someone who “pitches without fear,” Cortes’ funky, unpredictable delivery kept the Mets guessing into the fourth inning. “This was huge,” said Cortes, who struck out four in 3 1/3 frames of one-run ball. “We had to come out and salvage this series. It’s super important that we got the job done.” Dominic Smith chased Cortes with a one-out double in the fourth, and Pete Alonso greeted Darren O’Day with a two-run homer, his second long ball of the doubleheader. But O’Day escaped without further damage. Brett Gardner dashed home on a fifth-inning wild pitch for an important insurance run. Boone explained that he preferred Chapman in the Game 1 save situation because he believed Green would be needed for length, a blueprint that worked perfectly. The Mets did not get a ball out of the infield against Green, who could be considered as a fill-in closer while Chapman tries to figure out his ongoing issues with fastball command. "Chad Green did an amazing job,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said. “That guy pitching both games, that's something special. That doesn't happen often now in baseball."

Subway Series 2019 New York Yankees vs NY Mets Game 2 6/11/19
Subway Series 2019 New York Yankees vs NY Mets Game 2 6/11/19

June 11, 2019 NEW YORK -- When asked earlier this week what’s been different during Jason Vargas’ recent run of success, Mets manager Mickey Callaway bristled at the question. Callaway’s point was clear: few gave Vargas much of a chance, despite his recent history containing far more promising starts than poor ones. Perhaps they should have. In holding the Yankees to three runs over six innings Tuesday during a 10-4 Mets win in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, Vargas contributed his third consecutive quality outing. He has averaged more than seven innings per start during that stretch, with a 1.64 ERA. Longer term, Vargas has produced a 3.76 ERA over 105 1/3 innings since the 2018 All-Star break. If those numbers don’t pop off the page, they should given how contrary they run to Vargas’ reputation. As recently as mid-April, many were calling for the veteran’s rotation spot, urging general manager Brodie Van Wagenen to replace him with free agent Dallas Keuchel. The Mets never showed much interest in that, giving Vargas a public vote of confidence and largely ignoring Keuchel, who went to the Braves. Now, Vargas is rewarding their faith. After the Mets staked the left-hander to a six-run lead on Alonso’s three-run homer in the first inning and a trio of RBI singles off James Paxton in the third, Vargas cracked only a little. He allowed the first four Yankees to reach base in the bottom of the third, and the first three of those to score. Vargas then retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced to help the Mets salvage a doubleheader split; they lost Game 1, 12-5. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "2019 MLB FOOD FEST" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psGPvsE8T0c -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

thank you to IG: yanks.edits for the front row seat. May 28, 2019 NEW YORK -- The bullpen door opened. Yet another soggy Padres reliever trotted from the left-center-field warning track to the Yankee Stadium mound. This time, it was Craig Stammen, the sixth San Diego pitcher in a stretch of eight batters. The skies had opened. The Yankees’ offense had come to life. A once-sleepy ballpark turned electric. If Stammen and the Padres had wilted, they would’ve had any number of reasons to excuse their late-inning mAfter 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball from Eric Lauer, the Padres led, 5-1, entering the seventh inning. That’s when things spiraled. Brad Wieck, Phil Maton and Robbie Erlin all allowed the first hitter they faced to reach base. Trey Wingenter, who recently returned from a shoulder strain, was unavailable on back-to-back nights.meltdown on a rainy night in the Bronx. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "2019 MLB FOOD FEST" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psGPvsE8T0c -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
