Believe it or not, the Minnesota Timberwolves were once really good. In 2004, the LA Lakers dynasty crumbled, and a vacuum opened for a new Western Conference power to emerge. With coach Flip Saunders, superstar power forward Kevin Garnett, and a new veteran core that had just challenged LA in the Western Conference Finals, the Wolves looked like a strong contender to take over the West. They did not do that, and this episode of Collapse explains why. Building a contending team took time, and keeping it together required some politics and financial maneuvering on which Minnesota GM Kevin McHale didn't exactly stick the landing. The team's performance slipped following its Conference Final berth, and McHale reacted by gradually replacing parts, only to hurt the roster with each move. It took bad firings, bad trades, bad draft picks, and more to turn an excellent team led by Garnett into a terrible team with no Garnett and nothing to show for having lost him. Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane are both Irish soccer sensations.Mick saw greatness playing for Ireland, and then became a respected manager while Keane’s stacked up accomplishments with Manchester United, proving himself to be one of the greatest to ever play the game. For the 2002 World Cup, McCarthy was Ireland’s manager, and Roy was Ireland’s star. What could go wrong? Apparently, so so much. While Ireland defied the odds and earned point after point in their difficult World Cup qualifying group that included The Netherlands and Portugal, behind the scenes, things between star and coach were rocky. Keane technically quit and rejoined the team one night! And what do you know, things escalated from there into a huge blow up in front of the team that included obscenities and accusations. The pairing of McCarthy and Keane could have lead to nothing but success for Ireland — but it didn’t. Because these two are like oil and water. Which just so happen to be two key ingredients for a savory slab of beef. Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen as his wingman on the dynastic Chicago Bulls, but away from the court, one of MJ's closest friends was a rival: Charles Barkley. What did this mean for Pippen and Barkley? Not that much ... until Jordan was removed from the equation. In 1999, after the NBA lockout and Jordan's second retirement, Pippen left the rebuilding Bulls for the Houston Rockets. There he joined Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon to form a team of aging superstars in pursuit of one more ring. Or, in Barkley's case ... a ring. His first ring. Despite several trade demands over the years, Pippen had never played anywhere but Chicago, and the situation he found in Houston was not to his liking. He didn't get the ball enough, he fretted over the preparation and conditioning of the notoriously distractible Barkley, and ultimately he experienced nothing close to the success to which he'd grown accustomed. So after one disappointing season, Pippen demanded another trade. Charles wasn't happy and he called some names. Scottie returned the favor. So not long before they retired, two legends had themselves a very childish, very public feud. Think of this like a beefy sequel to "The Last Dance." What stood in the way of Allen Iverson earning a ring? It's tempting to simply say “practice,” but that oversimplifies all the factors ...
JaVale McGee and Shaquille O’Neal are two NBA big men of different styles, shapes, and generations. You might not think they’d have beef as they rarely saw each other on the court, but as Shaq moved into his role as analyst with a big personality, their adversarial relationship developed. They have a sort of a big brother-little brother relationship. Not in the sense that Shaq looked out for JaVale or anything like that, no certainly not. More in the sense of... Shaq teased JaVale until it became a real fight so vicious Mom had to step in. Seriously their moms got involved. What spurred this beef? 2.75 words: Shaqtin A Fool JaVale McGee was featured on the blooper segment more than any other player, ever. And guess what? He didn’t like that. This is a classic tale of a joke gone too far. And because this joke went too far on national television, year after year, it’s only natural that things blew up into a hearty cut of well-seasoned beef. As far as basketball goes, Kobe Bryant had what he needed by 2010. Without Shaq sharing his spotlight, Bryant won consecutive NBA championships, proving ...
I don't understand sports memorabilia collecting. We all are fans of different things, so the value is all over the place and feels like an extremely questionable investment. I know some people collect just because they like the stuff - but for the person who tried to spend $15,000 on a bag of air there's no way they saw that as anything other than an investment they could flip later. Or they just had too much wine and stumbled around eBay for a while (looking at you, mom). After Kobe Bryant's final NBA game, someone posted a Ziploc bag to eBay that allegedly contained air from Staples Center. That's all. Nothing more. Not like Kobe farted into the bag or graced it with his lips to blow a breath into the super trusty and unlikely to be punctured container. It was just air, from a stadium, full of rowdy fans watching a dude play a game for the last time. And yet, it took off. Why? How? Who? Won't someone think of the children?
