And yet ... ... well, before we get to it, we should rewind. We should examine how and why pitchers became so famously bad at hitting. We should remember how the designated hitter came to the American League, but not the National League, and take note of Colon mostly occupying one half of that divide. And before we dig into Bartolo's mostly pitiful, sometimes hilarious career at the plate, we should establish how great he is at his *actual* job, even into his 40s. This is a different kind of moment in history, but to appreciate how amazing it is, it deserves the deep rewind treatment. Steph Curry’s overtime prayer in one of the best regular season games ever needs a deep rewind
A deep rewind of a regular season game? Have we run out of ideas? Nope, don’t worry, it’s just that this regular season game simply ruled. With Kevin Durant’s free agency looming, the OKC Thunder were more or less desperate to prove they were title threats ASAP. And the Thunder were doing pretty well, at the time of this game, late February, they were the best rebounding team in the league and the second highest scoring team in the league. Who was the highest scoring team? You’re really gonna make me answer that? Fine, it was the Warriors. The very team that was reportedly the top contender to land Durant if he left OKC in free agency. In the 2016 season, the reigning champion Golden State Warriors were on a tear better than all other tears before it. They were 52-5 in late Feb. So yeah, it’s a regular season game, but there are stakes involved. For the Thunder, a win would make them a title threat and could go a long way in convincing KD to stay. For the Warriors, a win would suggest they don’t have any real competition in this league. An overtime war that came down to the last seconds. Welcome to a moment in history. Kobe Bryant's final shot needs a deep rewind
On April 13, 2016, Kobe Bryant could have mailed in his last ever regular season game. Instead, it became one of the most prolific, exciting nights of his career. Before we watch Bryant's FIFTIETH SHOT -- his 26,200th as a Laker -- we should reflect on everything that made it so important. It's worth taking a moment to reflect on the fact that Kobe made it through a record-setting 20 seasons in Los Angeles, somehow surpassing some of the greatest players in NBA history atop franchise leaderboards. Those twenty seasons included numerous championships, but also infighting, scandal, trade requests, and more losing than you might remember. Of course, by the time 2016 rolled around, those losing days had returned. To appreciate what Kobe gave us in his final game for a fallen team, it's worth remembering some of his most prolific scoring (and shooting) nights in prior down times. Let's rewind. Kevin Garnett's beef with the "snake-like" Wolves owner got even worse without Flip Saunders around
Kevin Garnett loves Minnesota. That's where he spent most of his legendary playing career, and he still loves the city, the fans, and many of his former teammates. But from the time Garnett became a Timberwolf until well after he retired, one man owned the franchise, and Kevin Garnett does not like that man. At all. Glen Taylor is a billionaire, one of Minnesota's richest people. He bought the Wolves in the early '90s, and brought in the regime that made the Wolves relevant, including Garnett and his first, beloved head coach, Flip Saunders. But making the Wolves "relevant" wasn't really enough with a generational talent like Garnett on board. How the Jacksonville Jaguars came moments from the Super Bowl, then blew up in record time
It's easy to forget how close the Jacksonville Jaguars came to reaching the Super Bowl for the first time ever. Their 2017 season was an impressive, unexpected ride as the defense turned in an incredible performance and the offense rushed through everyone in their way. But even when so much falls in place for a team, the Jags are a cautionary tale that sometimes EVERYTHING must go right to be successful in the NFL. There were issues in free agency, from an extension to Bortles to picking the wrong receiver to just totally screwing up potential deals. Infighting between players and a leadership role that went unreplaced led to further disfunction. And when the man in charge of the entire operation is, essentially, an ass, everything gets cranked up a notch. Paul Pierce and LeBron James' beef started with spitting and escalated to family drama
Do you ever find yourself in a situation where you thought you’d put all the past relationship drama behind you, but for whatever reason you find the other person still clinging onto the history you had together? And does this drama come out publicly whenever you turn on the TV? No? Well, LeBron James does. Despite having not suited up in the NBA for over three years now, in his new role as an ESPN analyst, Paul Pierce finds a way to trash LeBron James at any given opportunity. Envy leads you to say some absurd things — whether it’s saying that LeBron isn’t a top five player in NBA history, how it was him alone who made LeBron go to the Miami Heat in free agency, or just the thought that if the two were the same age he would have stopped LeBron from earning his NBA titles. While Paul Pierce continues to hate, LeBron just keeps his head down and hoops. This is a situation that goes way beyond Pierce trolling on TV. It spans multiple teams, family members, and even a preseason spitting incident. This beef really has some history to it. The Ben Simmons-Donovan Mitchell beef over Rookie of the Year became a feast for fans and brands
In April of 2018, Ben Simmons said he’d “100%” choose himself as rookie of the year. This is a good, normal amount of self-confidence for a player who has been putting up triple-double left and right all season. Nothing wrong with that. Sure, he did then go on to add that no other rookies had done so much as caught his attention that year ... Meanwhile Donovan Mitchell was a breakout rookie sensation. For example he won the dunk contest, had multiple games over 40 points, and was leading Utah to the playoffs in the competitive West. When he heard Simmons' comments, he decided to get his attention— by wearing a hoodie that questioned Simmon’s status as a rookie in the first place. You see, Ben Simmons was drafted in 2016, but was injured all season, so according to NBA rules, he counted as a rookie in 2018. According to Mitchell’s hoodies, one emblazoned with the dictionary definition of the word “rookie”, one that simply said “rookie?”, Simmons’ status wasn’t so clear cut. Both players insisted any and all taunts, digs, or hoodies were lighthearted. So, the media, the shoe companies, and most importantly, the fans took it upon themselves to pump bad blood through that light heart. Leaving us with a beef that took on a life of its own, one in which Simmons and Mitchell were merely avatars representing the two sides. They might not have really hated each other, but there was still plenty of hate to go around.
