Heading into the final season of his career, there was no doubt that Dwyane Wade would be recognized as the greatest Miami Heat player in franchise history. On February 27th, 2019, what appeared to be a basic regular-season game for Miami against the Golden State Warriors ended in a spectacular fashion. Down by two points with very little time remaining, D-Wade had the opportunity to be the savior for the Heat like he’s done several times before. Before we watch Wade’s last-second shot attempt, we need to understand what makes it so magical. It’s worth taking a moment to reflect on what Wade means to the Heat organization. When he was drafted in 2003, Wade was the spark to building a losing franchise into a true contender. He essentially helped build the franchise. Throughout his career in Miami, Wade made several All-NBA selections, won three championships, and earned a Finals MVP but his relationship with Miami wasn’t always smooth. Through several ups and downs, Wade at a time wasn’t a member of the Heat. But at this moment, he’s back in Miami to finish his career off where he started. To appreciate what D-Wade gave us in a magnificent finish, it’s worth remembering his legendary career with Miami, his ability to close out games in striking style, why his time in Miami ended, and how he found his way back to the Heat. “Who’s Dave Stieb?” you might be asking. Well, this is a guy who had never stepped on a pitcher’s mound in his life until age 20. Just four years later, he was the best pitcher in the American League. This is the beginning of the almost unbelievable story of the man who put the Toronto Blue Jays on the map. It's the 2017 NBA Playoffs. Rockets vs. Spurs in the final seconds of overtime of an extremely important Game 5. Needing a bucket, Houston's James Harden stares down the defending Manu Ginobili. This is a pretty cool matchup. The teams are neighbors trying to reignite a rivalry that's gone kinda dormant. And the players have more in common than you may remember, but some key distinctions that brought them to this point. Before we watch how James vs. Manu plays out, let's rewind! James Harden and Giannis Antetokounmpo are two extremely skilled hoopers with vastly different personalities. Harden is far more reserved and at a point dominated the league as he competed for MVP year after year. Despite finishing as the runner-up and even finally earning the MVP award in 2018, Harden’s playing style and his playoff shortcomings were heavily criticized by the media. As for Giannis, when he came into the league he was an innocent international prospect who was viewed more as a project and journalists were more enamored with his journey to the NBA rather than his performance. When Giannis made the leap into superstardom as a player, he also developed into a media darling. He was a cheerful dude who couldn’t resist slanging dad jokes during media interviews but on the court, he was a menace. During the 2018-19 season, Harden and Antetokounmpo battled neck and neck for MVP. So when Giannis was crowned the winner at the end of the season, Harden claimed he won because of “media narrative.” Harden had been hell-bent on proving he was the best player in the league and repeating as MVP certainly would have proved that, but there was Giannis stealing his shine. Now that the two were both on equal levels as players, playful exchanges between the two quickly turned personal and led to beef. When Dirk Nowitzki stared down the basket with a tied score and seconds remaining in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, he wasn't just staring down a potential victory. He was staring down a road win against the overwhelmingly brilliant Miami Heat Big 3. He was staring down yet another comeback for a 2011 Dallas Mavericks defined by them. He was staring down a shot at revenge for the team that stifled his Mavs back in 2006, and with it a chance to take control of his legacy. This final Mavs possession in Game 2 was a huge fork in the road. Before we watch Dirk attack, we should rewind. Pat Riley and Danny Ainge faced each other as part of the Lakers-Celtics rivalry. They were on either side of one of the NBA's biggest ever brawls. They coached against each other. None of that amounted to beef. But decades into their parallel careers, Riley and Ainge became rival executives -- for the Celtics and Miami Heat, respectively -- and once provoked, their mutual animus suddenly saw the light of day. Executive beef is a whole other flavor, the stuff of press releases and seemingly pointed transactions. This beef took a while to marinate, but for the brief period it flared up, it was pretty funny. Game 4 of the 1987 NBA Finals was a crucial juncture in multiple rivalries: the Celtics-Lakers rivalry dating back to the 1950s, and the Magic Johnson vs.
Few athletes have ever inspired a city like Michael Vick inspired Atlanta. Vick was a transformational athlete who forever changed how we think about the quarterback position, an apparent superhero who did things that, even years and years later, still seem impossible. His time in Atlanta met a heartbreaking, devastating end. But in the aftermath, against all odds, the Falcons somehow found a way to make us laugh. This is part five of a seven-part series.
