The "Shaq-Kobe beef" has become kind of a meme, just a flat cultural reference point. How to Make a Basket: Shaq vs. Kobe endeavors to go deeper than that, to figure out why and how these two legendary partners didn't get along, and how they achieved such greatness in spite of that. Part 2 begins in 2000. After Shaq and Kobe won their first championship with the Lakers, it seemed like the feud between their two stars might be over. But while Shaq relished in finally reaching the mountaintop, Kobe was dissatisfied. He spent the whole summer working on his shot, hoping to become such an elite scorer that no one could deny him first-option status in the Laker offense. The Lakers kept winning, but Shaq didn't agree with Kobe's plan, and their conflicts in viewpoint inflamed the "work beef." Part 3 premieres 11/7. How to Make a Basket: Shaq vs. Kobe endeavors to go deeper than that, to figure out why and how these two legendary partners didn't get along, and how they achieved such greatness in spite of that. Part 1 begins in 1996, when both Shaq and Kobe became Los Angeles Lakers. Shaq wanted a sidekick. A little brother. Kobe, even as a teenager, was laser-focused on making the Lakers his team. They found success, but first they fought. Shaquille takes the brotherhood of big men very seriously. He has nothing but admiration for the NBA centers he views as true greats. Well, Bill Walton doesn't rank among those greats, according to Shaq, so over the years, when Walton has used his platform to criticize O'Neal ... Shaq has fired back. At times, it's gotten pretty beefy. It's no secret that Patrick Beverley despises Chris Paul. Pat Bev notoriously shoved CP3 in the back during the 2021 NBA Western Conference Finals and might have gained even more recognition when he went on ESPN and trashed Paul's game. Like, viciously went after him. CP3 is undoubtedly one of the best point guards in NBA history. Beverley is an inspiration in his own way. After being drafted and cut in 2010, Pat Bev spent years sharpening his skills in hostile European environments, before carving out his place in the NBA as one of the league's peskiest defenders. It's a feud that dates back to when Beverley was in college. Both of these dudes are in their mid-to-late 30s, but no matter the time that's passed their beef is still piping hot and has shown no signs of ever cooling down. The mid-2010 Toronto Raptors had nightmares about LeBron James. From 2016-2018, Toronto matched up with Bron and the Cavs in three straight postseasons. In 2016, the Raptors advanced to their first-ever conference finals in franchise history. Unfortunately, the organization's crowning achievement ended in six games, before LeBron & Co. went on to win Cleveland’s first-ever NBA title. Although Toronto lost the series in six, they had plenty of positives to take away. Experts viewed the Raptors as a team ahead of schedule, thankful to find themselves deep in the postseason. The following year, the Raptors established they weren’t just some team happy to be in the mix, but a legit threat in the East. They reached the Conference Semifinals for a rematch against the Cavs… but LeBron led the way smacking them in four games. For Toronto, this 2018 season appeared to be different. Besides their dynamic backcourt duo of DeMar DeRozan & Kyle Lowry continuing to drop buckets, the team leaned heavily on their adaptable young bench, which allowed head coach Dwane Casey the peace to never stress who was on the floor. With Lowry and DeRozan holding it down, the youngins making noise, and consistent veteran support, the Raptors had arguably the most complete roster in the NBA and went on to win a franchise-record 59 games, earning the top seed in the conference. Strapped with homecourt advantage throughout the postseason, these new and dangerous Raptors were prepared to make a deep run… until they once again ran into their playoff nemesis in the second round. After dropping the first two games to the Cavs, Toronto found themselves locked into a nailbiting Game Three with a chance to snatch a pivotal win on the road. Can they finally take one step closer to overcoming LeBron? To find out, we gotta rewind. Let's all remember the time that Kentucky got too smart for their own good and blocked a Georgia free throw attempt in order to try and win the game. Yes. Really. Trust me. In the '97 season Scottie Pippen was making $2.25 million, which sounds like a lot of money, I want that much money. But I'm not an elite NBA player (never given the chance). Compared to salaries of elite NBA players, or even regular NBA players, Pippen was quite underpaid. In fact, he was the 128th highest paid player in the league. While leading, along with Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman, the Bulls to a 5th title. Outrageous. As you can imagine this led to bad blood-- in the form of tipsy verbal assault, near trades, purposefully delayed surgery, etc. This is part two of the beef between Scottie Pippen and the people who paid him. AKA the beef between Scottie Pippen and the team he helped capture 6 titles. AKA Scottie Pippen vs The Chicago Bulls.
