The Reds saved a get-out-of-jail card until the final minute of the match, celebrating wildly as TJ Harris steered a 12-man maul to the Hartpury line and touched down for the winning score. There was relief for the visitors in claiming the points from a match they could have won in the first half, but missed opportunities meant a far tighter conclusion that was harsh on the home side after a plucky effort. The game was another weather-affected affair, with wind blowing down the Alpas Arena accompanied for the most part by a steady drizzle. The conditions were in the Reds’ favour and enabled them to dominate territory and possession in the first half. Several opportunities involved penalties kicked to touch inside the Hartpury 22, but winning lineout ball proved elusive on occasions. A series of attacking phases eventually culminated in a try in the corner from Janco Venter as the ball was worked quickly out from Will Homer and Brendan Cope. Otherwise the Reds were unable to get points on the board, and their frustration was magnified in the closing stages of the half when Hartpury finally managed to get out of their half. Pressure on the Red defence eventually led to a penalty in front of the posts and a yellow card to Charlie Beckett for killing the ball. Josh Bragman slotted the kick, and was again on target soon after the break after Leroy Van Dam was pinged for failing to release the ball after running back a kick. Hartpury used the conditions to control the game during most of the second half. The home side rarely looked like scoring, but their one-point lead meant the onus was on the opponents to try and claim the next score. In fact it was another Bragman three-pointer that stretched the lead with five minutes to play, and to make matters worse the Reds were down to 14 men after Venter saw yellow for a clumsy no-arms challenge. But a collective determination in Jersey ranks was evident in the dying moments, retaining possession during a series of lineouts, mauls and penalties that eventually saw replacement Tom Jubb sin-binned for bringing down a maul. At the next lineout Hartpury appealed for a knock-on as Jake Upfield momentarily lost the ball after catching it at the lineout, but another penalty was the verdict as ex-Jersey back row player Seb Nagle-Taylor was ruled to have entered the breakdown from the wrong side. After a losing conclusion to 2019 when crucial lineout ball was lost in the dying moments of the home game with London Scottish, Harris held his nerve to help his side win four consecutive lineouts, including the last one which set up the winning score.

A desperately disappointing afternoon saw the Reds’ mood turn as nasty as the weather as London Scottish inflicted a first home defeat in the league this season. The Reds were hoping to move up the Christmas charts but ended up with just a losing bonus point by way of consolation. With bright and dry conditions giving way to wind and rain as the players warmed up, the Scots made a strong start and forced a stream of penalties from the home side, the third of which was kicked through the uprights by Will Magie. The Reds recovered and on their first serious visit to Scottish territory made ground from a maul. TJ Harris made a break for the line, and then another which saw him barge his way over for a try, well converted by Brendan Cope. Cope and Magie traded penalties during the closing stages of the half before the sides headed to the sanctuary of the dressing rooms. The Reds spent almost the whole of the third quarter in their opponents’ half but couldn’t come away with points, and Exiles’ fly-half Magie took advantage with some fine clearing kicks to put the home side on the back foot. Once they had gained a platform in the Reds 22, the Scots were ruthless, pressing forward in a series of phases before Bright spotted a chink in the defence as he picked up from the base of a ruck and cantered straight through to the posts. There were opportunities for the home side to win the game in the last 15 minutes, including several penalty awards, but possession was lost at two attacking lineouts and the visitors held out determinedly for the win Reds’ director of rugby Harvey Biljon said he was frustrated and disappointed by the outcome. “It was a very tough day at the office for both teams in those conditions, but we didn’t feel that we got the right reward from the breakdown and several critical decisions didn’t go our way,” he said.

Jersey Reds strengthened their grip on third place in the Greene King IPA Championship with a comfortable win over Richmond at the Athletic Ground. The visitors claimed six tries and after a few testing spells it was an eventually comfortable win, the fourth of the season over Richmond. The Reds looked to make an early impression, kicking a penalty to the corner and then launching a powerful maul. The hosts had no legal answer, and when the maul was 'sacked', referee Smales headed to the posts to signal a penalty try. Although the home side came back with a Rob Kirby penalty, a great run by Koch Marx made large amounts of ground and then the winger fed Mark Best who crossed the line (3-12). The Reds were beginning to get the bit between their teeth and really made their presence felt with two tries in the left-hand corner for Jason Worrall. One conversion by Penberthy meant it was 3-24, but Richmond clawed back seven points just before the break when Liston crossed from a maul. The home side had the lion's share of scoring chances early in the second period, but couldn't take them - Kirby missed a penalty and then saw what might have been a scoring pass intercepted by Jerry Sexton. Harvey Biljon began using his replacements after around 50 minutes, with Dave McKern, Jack Macfarlane and Sam Rodman coming on. McKern was prominent within minutes, winning a ruck turnover and then popping up on the wing where he drew a man and fed Will Homer. The scrum-half, playing as a wing after replacing Koch Marx, went over for his side's fifth try (10-31). Aaron Penberthy claimed his side's sixth try - his first five-pointer this season when he collected a Will Homer grubber and dotted down. The hosts grabbed their second try in the closing stages when replacement Josh McNulty crossed. But the Reds managed a strong finish, with Jack Macfarlane almost adding a score from a late maul, but the scoreboard remained unchanged.
