Sergio Aguero can help Gabriel Jesus succeed him at City - Pep Guardiola

FacebookTwitterFacebook MessengerPinterestEmail MANCHESTER, England -- Sergio Aguero can help Gabriel Jesus succeed him when his new contract expires in 2021, according to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. The club's record goalscorer signed a one-year contract extension on Friday and has already claimed a hat trick this season with the defending champions two points behind leaders Chelsea. Jesus, who signed a two-year extension himself in August, is 158 goals behind Aguero's all-time record of 204 goals for the club. But, at 21, he is nine years younger than his teammate and Guardiola believes he can get better.Fantasy Play ESPN Fantasy Soccer  Pick your eight-man team and compete in the Champions League, Premier League, La Liga or Liga MX, then go head-to-head in leagues against your friends or people around the world. Everybody can improve," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of Saturday's game at Cardiff City. "It's a good model to learn, especially how Aguero moves in the 18-yard box." Gabriel has only one goal from seven appearances this season and has looked short of confidence after a disappointing World Cup when he failed to score as Brazil were dumped out in the quarterfinals. He started City's surprise midweek defeat at home to Lyon in the Champions League, but Guardiola says he is pleased with his early season form. "He's happy. [He's been] good," the City boss said. "His movement, his high-pressing is the best in the world, but he's still young and when they are young players they have a gap to improve. "We are going to help in the final third, to take decisions, to find spaces. But the most important thing for Gabriel is to show the desire to improve and pay attention in the training sessions and he will get it. "The World Cup I was not there, but they are young and that's the challenge, about what you have done and if you are able to overcome those situations." Aguero is likely to be back in the starting lineup for the trip to Wales after recovering from an ankle knock that forced him off in last Saturday's victory over Fulham. Guardiola could also start Leroy Sane, who suffered an ankle injury in last season's FA Cup win over Cardiff after a terrible tackle from Joe Bennett. Afterward, the City boss was unhappy with the physical approach of Neil Warnock's side. "It's a new game and that's all," Guardiola said, when asked if he was concerned about a repeat performance. "It was months ago, a different competition, the FA Cup, now it's a Premier League game. "We are goi

Gonzalo Higuain scores again but Fabio Borini, Milan underwhelm in Luxembourg

FacebookTwitterFacebook MessengerPinterestEmail AC Milan failed to impress but secured three important points as Gonzalo Higuain scored the only goal of the game away at Luxembourg's F91 Dudelange in the Europa League on Thursday night. The Rossoneri were lacklustre for the most part, but they will be pleased to start their European run with a win. Positives Gennaro Gattuso made countless changes to his lineup, giving others an opportunity to impress. The Milan coach got some positive results from certain individuals, namely Samu Castillejo and Mattia Caldara, and that will give him more confidence in using them as the season goes on. Negatives Similarly to their draw with Cagliari on Sunday, Milan started slowly and struggled to dominate a game against inferior opposition. While they improved in the second half to control proceedings, they seem to have taken a step back from the side that played so well against Roma earlier this month. Manager rating out of 10 6 -- Gattuso was right to make several changes and rotate and rest key individuals. However, he perhaps has to accept some responsibility for Milan making it more difficult than it should have been and some of his selections remain puzzling, particularly starting Ignazio Abate, Andrea Bertolacci and Fabio Borini. Player ratings out of 10 (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating) GK Pepe Reina, 6 -- Rarely called upon but was vocal in organising his defence throughout and was alert to any danger around his penalty area. DF Ignazio Abate, 5 -- The veteran continues to struggle to make a positive impact on games as he looked hesitant pushing forward, was rushed in possession and often gave the ball away. Defensively sound for the most part, but not good enough as a backup option. DF Mattia Caldara, 6 -- Finally a debut for the summer signing as he continues to adjust to playing in a back four. Overcame a nervous start to put in a solid display and grew in confidence as he has certainly made a case to displace Mateo Musacchio against Atalanta on Sunday. DF Alessio Romagnoli, 6 -- The Milan captain put in a good performance as he led by example with his pressing and defensive leadership. Picked up a sloppy yellow card, but overall did his job well in marshalling the backline. DF Diego Laxalt, 7 -- Not always accurate with his distribution, but a very positive display from the Uruguay international. Played with plenty of urgency, energy and intensity on and off the ball to emerge as one of the top performers. He has surely given Gattuso a selection headache for the weekend. MF Andrea Bertolacci, 5 -- Anonymous against Dudelange, it's questionable as to how many more chances he'll get. The game seemed to bypass him throughout as he struggled to make any impact at all. If Bertolacci can't dominate a midfield battle at this level, it's a concern for Milan as to what would happen against the top sides. MF Jose Mauri, 6 -- The combative midfielder put in a decent performanc

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the double against Vorskla Poltava
Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the double against Vorskla Poltava

Europa League • Arsenal 4-2 Vorskla Poltava • Aubameyang 32 56, Welbeck 48, Özil 74  There was something inherently Arsenaly about the way Unai Emery’s team turned a 4-0 cruise so gentle Alexandre Lacazette was almost horizontal watching from the substitute’s bench into a choppy, slightly unnerving finish. FC Vorskla, fifth in the Ukranian Premier League, roused themselves to score two screamers in the closing stages of this Europa League group game, which left Emery pondering the defensive itch he is unable to scratch out of his squad yet. Arsenal have not kept a clean sheet all season.  This explains why it is so necessary to take the Europa League seriously. In their current defensive shape they don’t look robust enough to easily regain a footing in the top four of the Premier League.  The late goals evidently took some sheen off an otherwise positive evening, which allowed Emery to give game time to experienced players in need of minutes and a chance to shine. Across the pitch were players keen to make an impact. Bernd Leno made his debut and impressed with his footwork but was understandably dismayed to twice pick the ball from his net after searing shots he could do little to repel. Lucas Torreira finally got a starting berth and showed why that ought to be a regular occurrence. Danny Welbeck snuck a goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got his mojo back, which Arsenal will hope helps him into some serious form after an indifferent start to the campaign.  Due to a quirk in the rules so outmoded it has been abolished, Aubameyang was not allowed to play a single minute of Europa League football last season after his mid-season move from Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal. They needed him then, but he needed the Europa League now. The striker clearly enjoyed stretching his legs against the minnows from Poltava and scored twice to widen his smile.  Emery saw both the promising and worrying all in one game – not for the first time as he noted. Having felt the impact of late goals conceded against Chelsea and Newcastle, Arsenal exposed their own shortcomings when they switched off in the closing stages and that is a habit Emery wants to break. “It is our disappointment today,” he said. “We need to improve in this. The last minute in Newcastle, the last 20 minutes here. Our challenge is to be competitive for 90 minutes in each match.”  If there were bits of the performance he wants to improve, he was certainly pleased with the result. Arsenal have won four matches in a row now, and getting off to a winning start in the Europa League was imperative.  It holds a special place in Emery’s heart given that he has won it three times, and although the path to the final in this competition is long, the Arsenal head coach took this opening group game seriously enough to pick a strong team.  Arsenal’s goals were smartly taken. The first arrived thanks to a counter-attack based on a welcome flash of pace and precision. Henrikh Mkhitaryan charged forward and picked o

Fear of fans stopped Germany players thanking Mesut Ozil - Jerome Boateng

FacebookTwitterFacebook MessengerPinterestEmail Jerome Boateng has said he was disappointed by his Germany teammates' reaction to Mesut Ozil's withdrawal from international football. In the wake of the controversy surrounding a photo taken with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May, Ozil retired from international football following the World Cup and cited racism at the top of the German FA and in parts of German society. While criticism of Ozil's attacks on the German FA was strong by his old teammates, only a handful of players including Boateng thanked him for his services for the Germany team. "Where were the teammates who thanked Mesut? Apparently, they did not dare to make any comments because they thought it would not go down well with the Germany fans," Boateng, himself a target of racist insults in 2016, told Suddeutsche Zeitung.Fantasy Play ESPN Fantasy Soccer  Pick your eight-man team and compete in the Champions League, Premier League, La Liga or Liga MX, then go head-to-head in leagues against your friends or people around the world. It's about a great player who has won the World Cup with us," Boateng said. "Who has won a lot of caps, who changed German football a bit. A No. 10 with a migratory background. "You must thank him. To abstain, I think that's sad!" The photo showing Ozil and teammate Ilkay Gundogan was published only hours before the announcement of Germany's preliminary World Cup squad. Both players were selected by Bundestrainer Joachim Low, and, following a meeting with German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German FA hoped to end the discussions, but to no avail. "It was an annoying issue which caused a lot of unrest," Boateng said. "At first, everyone underestimated it and then we took it to the World Cup. It was a burden for everyone, also for the two players." Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Ozil's agent Erkut Sogut hit out at Germany internationals Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos, calling their response to the Arsenal star's withdrawal from the national team "either naive or scheming."

U.S.'s Weston McKennie gets start, assist in Schalke draw with Porto

FacebookTwitterFacebook MessengerPinterestEmail Schalke 04 marked their return to the Champions League after a three-year absence with a 1-1 draw at home to Porto in their Group D opener on Tuesday. United States international Weston McKennie got his first Champions League start for the Bundesliga side, becoming the sixth American in history to feature for a team from Germany's top flight in the competition. Schalke went into the game having lost all three domestic league matches so far this season, but forward Breel Embolo put the hosts ahead in the 64th minute before Otavio levelled with Porto's second penalty of the evening 11 minutes later. With eight Champions League debutants in Schalke's starting lineup, Domenico Tedesco's side needed some time to settle in. Porto, who won the 2004 Champions League title in the same stadium, got a 13th minute penalty when Alex Telles' deep throw-in landed on Naldo's arm. But keeper Ralf Faehrmann picked the right corner and spectacularly palmed Telles' penalty to safety. The Schalke captain came to the rescue again two minutes after the restart with a sensational reflex save to keep out a point-blank Felipe header. The home side gradually grew more adventurous and, after twice failing to score on the break, Embolo found the net after a fine assist from McKennie. But another Naldo foul in the box gave the Portuguese the chance to level from the penalty spot and Otavio this time sent Faehrmann the wrong way to grab a point for the visitors.

Enduring Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben on a par with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi | bundes

Arjen Robben. One of the most consistent and electrifying performers of his generation, albeit one of the most under appreciated.  The statistics speak for themselves. On Matchday 1 of the 2018/19 Bundesliga campaign - Robben's 10th in Germany - the 34-year-old stepped off the bench to bring up his 96th goal, on his 190th appearance, as Bayern Munich kicked of their title defence with a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim. Together with his 68 assists, he has now had a direct hand in a goal every 82 minutes that he's played in the Bundesliga. It's a mind-boggling ratio: streaks ahead of English Premier League upstarts Eden Hazard (120 mins) and Kevin De Bruyne (142 mins), and only bettered at league level - of his fellow 30-something contemporaries - by Lionel Messi (61 mins) and Cristiano Ronaldo (74 mins). Hindered by a chequered injury history, Robben doesn't get the same level of acclaim as world football's top two - but he certainly deserves it. Watch: Nine years and counting of Robben brilliance at Bayern  Since making his professional debut for hometown club Groningen in 2000/01, Robben has racked up 682 appearances in all competitions for club and country. He has won, among others, the Eredivisie, two English Premier League titles, La Liga and is a seven-time Bundesliga champion.  Further bespangling a decorated resumé, the Dutch Destroyer also landed Bayern their fifth European crown with the winning goal in the final of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium, and collected a runners-up medal at the FIFA 2010 World Cup and bronze in 2014. "Arjen is a perfect example of how an older player can still learn and develop, and refuse to be satisfied with what he's already achieved," former Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer said in 2014, the year Robben finished third behind Ronaldo and Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the UEFA Best Player in Europe stakes. "He's world class. I can only encourage every young player to watch and learn from him." Robben made a telling contribution as Bayern won a Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Cup treble in 2013. © gettyimages  Sound advice. Despite only breaking the 30-game barrier in one of his 18 campaigns to date due to injury – hamstring troubles, for the most part - Robben is a player who has continually defied expectation. He has become quicker with age and more deadly. His 2016/17 return is a prime example. Largely injury-free, the Bedum-born ace scored 13 times and produced 12 assists, with only Robert Lewandowski proving more effective in front of goal in a Bayern shirt. Quite the tally for a midfielder, albeit nothing out-of-the-ordinary for Robben, who has hit at least 15 goals and assists combined in all but three of his nine full Bundesliga seasons to date. Arsenal's Nacho Monreal leaps to defence of Mesut Ozil

Nacho Monreal has defended Arsenal team-mate Mesut Ozil following his start to the new season, insisting the player has not had a bust-up with new boss Unai Emery.  Reports of a fall-out between the pair surfaced after Ozil was omitted from the squad for last month's 3-1 win over West Ham, despite Emery's claim that the German was ill. And Monreal insists talk of issues between Emery and Arsenal's highest paid player Ozil are nothing more than a fabrication.  "People have been a bit unfair with him," Monreal said ahead of Spain's UEFA Natio
