Croatia 0-0 England: Three Lions held on a quiet night in Rijeka. England should have secured their first Nations League victory after Gareth Southgate's men dealt with the quirks of playing behind closed doors and had the best chances against Croatia. Just 93 days after the Three Lions lost to Zlatko Dalic's men in the World Cup semi-finals, the countries met in surroundings that could scarcely have been more different to July's huge encounter at the packed Luzhniki. The virtually-empty Stadion HNK Rijeka hosted England's first-ever match behind closed doors as Croatia completed a ground ban imposed by UEFA for having a swastika on the pitch during a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy. Eric Dier and Harry Kane hit the woodwork on a night when Marcus Rashford wasted two great chances, meaning the opportunity to exact World Cup revenge went begging as the Group A4 encounter ended 0-0 on a strange night for all involved. Every shout, kick and challenge was audible in the match played out in front of a few hundred officials and journalists. You could even hear the beeping of an ambulance reversing behind one of the goals. There were regular, distant cries from a small group of hardy England fans that had found a vantage point high above one of the stands, but those efforts were rewarded with a poor first half in which Dier hit the post late on. England improved after the break as Kane hit the woodwork before Rashford missed two fine chances, while Ante Rebic curled just wide for a Croatia side that had lost their Nations League opener 6-0 in Spain. Southgate's men face their own Spanish test on Monday without the suspended Jordan Henderson and John Stones, but there are certainly promising moments to build on.
Match report and player ratings as Spain beat Wales 4-1 in Cardiff. Spain produced a Cardiff masterclass to stun Wales 4-1 and send a warning shot to Nations League rivals England. Luis Enrique's stylish side strolled to a 4-1 victory on a night when Wales returned to the 74,500-capacity Principality Stadium for the first time in seven-and-a-half years. Paco Alcacer, with a brace, and Sergio Ramos scored inside 29 minutes before substitute Marc Bartra added a fourth with a towering second-half header. Sam Vokes headed a consolation a minute from time but it was a sobering evening for Ryan Giggs' side ahead of their Nations League game against the Republic of Ireland. Wayne Hennessey: Could do little about Spain's first-half scoring blitz that ended the game as a contest. Looked on as Wales' defence was shredded. 6 (out of 10) Chris Gunter: Attempted to utilise all his experience of 90 international caps to push Wales off the back foot, but it was a lost cause far too early. 5 Ashley Williams: An uncomfortable night for the Wales captain, who allowed his opposite number Sergio Ramos the freedom of Cardiff for Spain's second goal. He did not appear for the second half. 4 Ben Davies: Often uneasy at the back as Spain looked as though they could cut Wales open when they felt like it. A first half re-run would not offer pleasant viewing. 4 Connor Roberts: Unquestionably one of Wales' brightest future stars, he will probably learn more from Spain's masterclass than many games he wins. 6 Joe Allen: Tried to get himself into the thick of it, yet Spain's pinpoint passing meant he had little time on the ball. High work-rate, though. 6 Ethan Ampadu: Forced David De Gea into a save - a rarity in itself - and was not overawed either by the occasion or Spain's majestic midfield unit before he limped off early in the second period. 7 Declan John: Could make little impact on the contest, spending much of the game chasing Spanish players who at times had the ball on a metaphoric piece of string. 5 Harry Wilson: The 21-year-old was a busy, lively presence for his team, providing a rare shaft of light. Plenty to enthuse about during his 45-minute stint. 7 Aaron Ramsey: Started in an advanced midfield role, before gradually tracking back for possession in an attempt to assert authority. Took over as captain after Williams departed. 6 Sam Vokes: Kept a lonely vigil up front at times. Ran hard, and although he only had crumbs of possession to live off, scored a late goal. 7 Substitutes James Chester (for Williams, 46 mins): Took over from Wales skipper Williams for the second half. 5 David Brooks (for Wilson, 46): Started the second period, but had few opportunities to shine. 5 Andy King (for Ampadu, 50): Summoned off the bench after a hobbling Ampadu left the action. 5 Matthew Smith (for Allen, 61): Among three Wales substitutes sent on after 62 minutes as coach Ryan Giggs looked for overdue impetus. 5 Tom Lawrence (for John, 62): impressed against Ireland earlier this month, and he was soon in the action. 6 Jazz Richards (for Davies, 62): featured for the final 28 minutes, but could only look on as Spain added a fourth goal. 5
Confirmed: Leeds United lineup v Brentford at Elland Road. Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United will face Brentford at Elland Road in the Championship this afternoon. Leeds United will be looking to pick up all three points this afternoon when they take on Brentford at Elland Road in the Championship. The West Yorkshire outfit will head into the match against Brentford at home on the back of a 1-0 victory over Hull City away from home. The Whites are at the top of the league table at the moment with 22 points from 11 matches, level on points with second-placed Middlesbrough. Leeds are going strong in the Championship and will fancy their chances of picking up all three points from the encounter against the Bees. Brentford, though, will not be easy pushovers, as they are in the top six of the Championship table at the moment. This is how Leeds will line up against Brentford at Elland Road in the Championship this afternoon: | #LUFC Starting XI presented by @Ladbrokes:-Peacock-Farrell, Ayling, Dallas, Cooper (c), Jansson, Phillips, Klich, Alioski, Harrison, Saiz, Roberts pic.twitter.com/tIqz2zFKeN Meanwhile, Leeds winger Stuart Dallas has given his take on his former club Brentford. The 27-year-old Northern Ireland international joined the Whites from Championship rivals Brentford in the summer of 2015. Dallas told Leeds Live about Brentford (14:26): “One of the best footballing sides in the league. Know we’re going to be in a tough game. “They thrive on coming to big stadiums and atmospheres. Full of confidence and there or thereabouts. In the top-eight, I think. “Great manager there with a striker bang in form. If we’re not on form we could be in for a tough afternoon.”
Former Celtic striker slams two Hoops players after Salzburg collapse. Scottish Premiership champions Celtic fell apart in the second half of Thursday's Europa League clash, with Dedryck Boyata and Jack Hendry under fire. Not for the first time this season, bad defending has cost Celtic dear. Brendan Rodgers’ side were a goal up and flying in Thursday’s Europa League clash away at Red Bull Salzburg, Odsonne Edouard giving the visitors a second-minute lead. But Celtic left Austria with a 3-1 defeat after a second half performance in which their problems at the back were exposed once again. In the injury-enforced absence of Kristoffer Ajer and Filip Benkovic, Dedryck Boyata and Jack Hendry lined up at centre-back at the Red Bull Arena. But the Belgian and the Scot were taken to the cleaners in the second half as the prolific Munas Dabbur netted twice. Speaking on BT Sport’s live coverage (4 October), former Celtic and Rangers striker Kenny Miller has taken aim at the two Bhoys defenders. “They never defended the balls into the box properly. The positions of the centre-backs were not right from the outset, particularly for the second goal,” Miller said. Celtic fans would struggle to disagree. Boyata might be one of the best defenders in Scottish football, but his limitations have been frequently exposed in Europe and he floundered again last night, making a mockery of the big bids that were made for him this summer. Hendry, meanwhile, continues to toil in Celtic colours, having failed to convince since his £1.5 million move from Dundee in January.
Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa sack manager Steve Bruce. Steve Bruce has been sacked by Sky Bet Championship club Aston Villa following their 3-3 draw with Preston, according to Sky sources. Villa are currently 12th in the Sky Bet Championship after winning just three of their first 11 league games this season. Bruce had come under increasing pressure after Villa's poor start to the season and had a cabbage hurled at him during that draw with Preston. The 57-year-old, who has won promotion to the Premier League twice with two different clubs - Birmingham and Hull - replaced Roberto Di Matteo at Villa Park in October 2016. "Aston Villa can confirm that manager Steve Bruce and his assistants Colin Calderwood, Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Gary Walsh are leaving their posts with immediate effect after having their contracts terminated. The process to appoint a new manager is under way," the club said. A further statement issued on behalf of the board added: "We would like to place on record our gratitude to Steve and his team for their hard work and commitment. We wish them well for the future. "The process of recruiting a new manager has begun. In the meantime, Kevin MacDonald, Aston Villa Under-23s manager, will be in charge of the team for our trip to Millwall on Saturday."
Sporting Life Accumulator: Tuesday treble for EFL enhanced with Sky Bet. We have a midweek treble for the latest round of matches enhanced to 25/1 with the EFL title sponsors Sky Bet. Pompey sit top of Sky Bet League One after going unbeaten during their opening ten games. They've picked up 13 points out of a possible 15 away from home and face a Coventry side who have lost as many as they have won in front of their own fans. Some may fancy Sunderland here, but there is value in backing an away win. Posh are the only side to better Portsmouth's record on the road as they've won five from five, scoring 17 goals in the process. Jason Cummings and Matt Godden are battling each other for the top goalscorer title and could strike here. Walsall's strong start to the season sees them sit just outside the play-off places in Sky Bet League One. They've beaten struggling Gillingham and Plymouth at home this season and welcome a Shrewsbury side with just two points from five away games. Odds correct at 2325 BST on 01/10/18
Neil Harris blasts Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa a 'disgrace' after Saturday incident. Leeds earned a late 1-1 draw against Millwall on Saturday. Millwall manager Neil Harris has told London News Online that Leeds United were a "disgrace to English football" in their celebrations after Jack Harrison had scored a late equaliser at The Den. Leeds were destined to suffer their first league loss under Marcelo Bielsa with Millwall 1-0 to the good thanks to Jed Wallace's second-half strike. But new signing Jack Harrison scored a late equaliser from 20 yards. Tempers flared on the touchline, with Bielsa directing his celebrations at the Millwall dugout after Harris and his coaching staff had failed to retrieve the ball quickly earlier on with Leeds looking for an equaliser. With both sides having chances to win the match in South London, a point apiece was a fair result but Harris has since blasted the Leeds boss despite stating that the duo had worked things out after the match. “I think Marcelo has already apologised in the press for his bench. And I’ve already stated that my staff could’ve given the ball back slightly quicker, make it more accessible to get the ball. “But their reaction to the goal is completely over the top and a disgrace in English football," Harris said. Tyler Roberts made just his third appearance for Leeds as the Whites' attacking spearhead with both Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe injured, and he missed three golden chances to open his Leeds account. Steve Morison also should have scored against his old side in the first half, but his tame effort was saved by Bailey Peacock-Farrell. Leeds remain at the top of the Championship, after Middlesbrough lost to Norwich. Leeds are next in action against Preston North End and at Elland Road on Tuesday night, having already suffered a 2-0 loss to Alex Neil's side in the Carabao Cup this term.
