80s Michael Jordan vs 80s Ron Harper - The First Jordan Inspired Rival
80s Michael Jordan vs 80s Ron Harper - The First Jordan Inspired Rival

Michael Jordan vs Ron Harper was a great rivalry in the NBA back during the late 80's. This was pre-ACL injury (happened in 1990) Ron Harper. This was young Ron Harper. When the Bulls played against Ron Harper the story of the game would become Ron Harper's admiration for Michael Jordan's game. Many of you may remember this is exactly how Kobe Bryant eventually was introduced to basketball fans, when he entered the NBA. There were a number of players from Ron Harper to Grant Hill to Kobe Bryant all the way up to LeBron James who were brought in to the NBA, with Michael Jordan comparisons as part of their introduction story. Each guy shared stories of their Michael Jordan inspired journey, as part of their introduction. So, if any of you ever wondered to yourself... "I wonder when those started", well on an NBA level, it really was Ron Harper. Yes folks this was taking place all the way back in 1987. This is where it really started. With Ron Harper. The beginning of Michael Jordan's influence & impact on the sport itself, through inspiration. This inspiration would also eventually birth the "Be Like Mike" commercials. 80's Michael Jordan vs 80's Magic Johnson - Epic Shoot Out In Chicago Stadium Bulls vs Lakers
80's Michael Jordan vs 80's Magic Johnson - Epic Shoot Out In Chicago Stadium Bulls vs Lakers

80's Michael Jordan vs 80's Magic Johnson - Epic Shoot-Out In Chicago Stadium Bulls vs Lakers Michael Jordan vs Magic Johnson at Chicago Stadium in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's final game in Chicago. This was an incredible match-up of NBA legends featuring the world champions of the future against the Reigning World Champion Lakers! Watch 80's Michael Jordan & 80's Magic Johnson go toe to toe!!! Magic & Michael trade shots back & forth! At the beginning of the video you will hear comments from Michael Jordan about his frustrations with his teammates on the Chicago Bulls. Context is king when it pertains to these comments. First of all, Michael had every right to feel that way. This was a grind. Jordan was not happy about the Bulls trading away Charles Oakley, and Bill Cartwright clearly did not have top center talent. Draft picks Scottie Pippen & Horace Grant had produced inconsistent results, and Pippen was currently coming off the bench. And with the #1 overall pick that year, who did Jerry Krause draft to help Michael Jordan? He drafted Will Perdue 11th overall, which was a brutally bad 1st round draft pick. Imagine how Jordan felt as he spent months in anticipation for help, and Jerry Krause drafts... Will Perdue? Can anyone find film that exists where Will Perdue shows NBA talent? Michael Jordan was frustrated, after years of going to battle with inferior teammates. In context, this was not a championship caliber team & Jordan would be proven absolutely correct in his assessment that this team was not championship material, yet. He helped some of his teammates become championship material, through patience & hard work... but Michael was correct in his assessment at this moment in time. He didn't demand a trade. He didn't demand for teammates to be traded. He did absolutely, however, let teammates know, when he thought they weren't good. Jordan’s dislike for [Will] Perdue was palpable. He called him “Will Vanderbilt.” “He doesn’t deserve to be named after a Big Ten school,” Jordan would explain. So, that's the context behind Michael Jordan's comments, in the video. Jordan had been working hard at attempting to turn around the franchise, and maybe he felt by making these statements he could motivate his younger teammates to stop wasting time. Jordan wanted to win, NOW. This was such a fun game & there was some North Carolina Tar Heel vs North Carolina Tar Heel action featuring former NCAA National Championship teammates Michael Jordan vs James Worthy. Michael didn't just have Magic Johnson to deal with, he had his ex-teammate to deal with, in crunch time, as well. Enjoy! 80's Michael Jordan vs 80's Reggie Miller | Chicago Bulls vs Indiana Pacers

80's Michael Jordan vs 80's Reggie Miller & the Loaded Sharpshooting Indiana Pacers Hope you enjoy this fantastic match-up featuring the LOADED sharp shooting Indiana Pacers, including Reggie Miller, Chuck Person, Rik Smits, Vern Fleming, Wayman Tisdale, Scott Skiles, etc against the Chicago Bulls! The match-ups between the Pacers & the Bulls during Michael Jordan's career were physical & competitive! For individuals who are studying Michael Jordan's career, post-career, it may be impossible to accurately relay the message to you, as to how frustrating it was, in the 1980's, as a Chicago Bulls fan. In the late 80's we saw glimpses of brilliance from players like Horace Grant & Scottie Pippen, but no consistency. Scottie Pippen of the 80's was very inconsistent, and he folded like a cheap tent every year, to end the season, against Detroit. It was so obvious that Michael Jordan was better than Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Isiah Thomas... in the 1980's. One BIG problem..... Michael Jordan's supporting cast was immeasurably inferior compared to that of the other top stars. The other top stars were winning all the championships. You play to win the game, and Jordan wanted to win, but he couldn't win consistently against the top teams with his vastly inferior supporting cast. Will Perdue was Jerry Krause's highly touted 1st round draft pick (11th overall). During this game, you can even hear Bulls fans loudly cheer Will Perdue, because there were Bulls fans hoping that WILL PERDUE would live up to his #1 draft pick status. Spoiler alert, folks, Bulls fans quickly learned that Will Perdue was NOT great at pro basketball. This was further delaying the realistic possibility of Michael Jordan becoming a champion. Jerry Krause's saw great hope in Will Perdue. How could ANYONE see #11 overall talent in Will Perdue? Where does this film exist? Jerry Krause could have taken Dan Majerle, Rod Strickland, Vernon Maxwell, or Anthony Mason in the draft... but he takes Will Perdue instead. Michael Jordan eventually became frustrated. Jordan’s dislike for [Will] Perdue was palpable. He called him “Will Vanderbilt.” “He doesn’t deserve to be named after a Big Ten school,” Jordan would explain. These were the supporting casts Jordan was attempting to win championships with. These were the very difficult 1980's Bulls teams. There wasn't much great about these teams, consistently, past Michael Jordan. And it wasn't because Jordan "needed to trust his teammates"... it was because quite simply, his teammates performed poorly at basketball against the best teams, quite often, because they weren't very talented.... while Jordan was dominating everyone. Only Michael Jordan could have taken these teams as far, as he did. He also stayed as patient as possible with Pippen & Grant, never gave up on them, and allowed them to grow as future champions. 80's Michael Jordan Leads Bulls to 50 Wins for 1st Time Since 1974 in Stacked East
80's Michael Jordan Leads Bulls to 50 Wins for 1st Time Since 1974 in Stacked East

Rapid rise! If you were around to witness the early years of Michael Jordan's career you understand that the Bulls organization couldn't even maintain the arena properly, when MJ got there. Players would often complain about the awful flooring that the Bulls used, on top of the Blackhawks ice, and players would often slide & fall on the court. Forget running a winning NBA franchise, the Bulls couldn't even properly maintain the actual basketball court. The locker room was infested with drugs & players who didn't care about winning. Achieving 50 wins, this quickly, is one of MJ's most underrated feats!! Considering ALL the circumstances, this was one of the great sports turnarounds, EVER! The Bulls hadn't won 50 games since 1974. The Bulls wins & losses, during their first 50 win season since 1974, were directly dependent on Jordan's scoring & defense. When Jordan scored: Under 25 points: Bulls went 2-8 (20% win %) 25-29 points: Bulls went 7-6 (53.8% win %) 30-34 points: Bulls went 12-4 (75% win %) 35-39 points: Bulls went 16-10 (61.5% win %) 40+ points: Bulls went 13-5 (72.2% win %) For context, Shaq & Kobe had a 72.9% win % as a duo. When 1987-88 Jordan scored 40+ points he had the Bulls just shy of Shaq & Kobe's duo win %. That's insane! Peak Michael Jordan was like nothing we've ever seen. As for this specific performance, this should have been a gimme, the Celtics did not have McHale or Bird, who were both out due to injury. You would think that MJ's supporting cast would give him adequate help, and he'd be able to put on a cruise control performance. WRONG. Bulls were barely holding on to a slim 3 point lead, in crunch time, against Celtics backups. Once again, there was Michael Jordan, telling all his teammates to jump on his back... so he could once again will the Bulls to victory. This game also illustrated how far the Bulls still had to go, from the perspective of developing a supporting cast. They are trying to tell you that they didn't watch the Michael Jordan era, and there are much better things you could be doing with your time rather than listening to their takes on an era they didn't even watch. Would you go to someone for an opinion on Shakespeare if they had never seen the plays Macbeth, Hamlet, or Othello? Of course you wouldn't. Consider the source. Nobody who watched that era would trash the talent all around the league. Michael Jordan played in a great era with a great blend of fierce competitors, awe inspiring athletes, lock down defenders, knock down shooters, and ultra skilled ballers.
