Russell Westbrook, Lakers Suffer 3rd-Quarter Collapse in 107-83 Loss to T-Wolves The Minnesota Timberwolves outscored the Los Angeles Lakers 40-12 in the third quarter en route to a 107-83 road win in Staples Center on Friday evening. L.A. led 49-44 at halftime before Minnesota turned a close game into a blowout. Karl-Anthony Towns outscored the Lakers 18-12 in the third quarter alone, hitting four three-pointers along the way. He finished with 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting and seven rebounds. The Lakers got little production outside Anthony Davis (22 points) and Russell Westbrook (20), with the rest of the team combining to score just 41 on 15-of-58 shooting. L.A. continued to play without LeBron James, who missed his fifth straight game with an abdominal strain. The 4-7 Timberwolves broke a six-game losing skid. The 7-6 Lakers' two-game win streak ended. Notable Performances: Timberwolves C Karl-Anthony Towns: 29 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals Timberwolves PG D'Angelo Russell: 22 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds Timberwolves G Patrick Beverley: 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists Lakers PF/C Anthony Davis: 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals Lakers PG Russell Westbrook: 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists Lakers Post Historically Bad Third Quarter and Second Half With 11:17 remaining in the third quarter, Davis hit a 19-foot jumper to give the Lakers a 51-47 lead. From that point forward, the Lakers did not make another basket for nearly eight minutes of game time when Avery Bradley knocked down a three-pointer with 3:44 remaining to cut the Minnesota lead to 73-56. That three was moot. Minnesota had engineered a 27-2 run between the Davis and Bradley buckets, with the Lakers' only points coming on a pair of AD free throws. Towns had seven points of his own in that stretch, and that was before he closed the quarter with 11 more points in the final four minutes to finish the frame with 18 and give Minnesota a 23-point edge going into the fourth. On the other end, the Lakers missed 14 straight shots and committed three turnovers. By the time the quarter (and game) were over, this Lakers team found itself on the wrong side of history. Despite the loss, the sky isn't completely falling in L.A. Yes, 7-6 isn't where the Lakers want to be, but James isn't on the court. It appears he may be back soon, per head coach Frank Vogel's pregame comments (h/t Lakers reporter Mike Trudell). Sure, losing by 24 at home to a 4-7 team isn't ideal, but it's only November. The Lakers have time to work out their issues, although a multitude of them exist after 13 contests. So Z Nation, what did you think about the Lakers disappointing loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves??? And who is to blame for the Lakers loss tonight??? Lakers Lose To The Warriors In Preseason | Dwight Howard Hot Off The Bench | Russell Westbrook Debut The Los Angeles Lakers fell to 0-3 in the preseason after losing to the Golden State Warriors, 121-114. LeBron James and Russell Westbrook made their preseason debuts after not featuring in the first two contests, and the rust for both was evident immediately. Westbrook tallied six turnovers in the first quarter alone, with many coming against Golden State’s zone defense. Both teams had a sloppy start to the game but gradually acclimated to things as the clock progressed. The Warriors won the second quarter by 14 points to take a 59-49 lead at halftime and eventually pushed the lead to over 20 in the third. Los Angeles responded with a furious comeback in the final quarter led by Talen Horton-Tucker, Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard, but L.A. didn’t have enough to pull it off. Here are three takeaways from the game: LeBron James and Russell Westbrook have work to do. It wasn’t surprising that the two debutants struggled to find a rhythm right away, and it highlighted the work that must be done. Westbrook and James shot a combined 5-of-19 overall, and they couldn’t solve the Warriors’ zone defensive schemes with the spacing issues. But this is why preseason games are important. The Lakers specifically need these two stars to figure things out as soon as possible, and games like this allow them to watch the film and see where they can improve. Having Anthony Davis back, who didn’t play for rest purposes, will also be an adjustment process. Dwight Howard can still be an effective backup Dwight Howard is a great center to have at minimum value. The future Hall-of-Famer understands his strengths and seeks to stick to them at all times. When he’s not fouling, he can be extremely effective. That was the case against a much smaller Golden State squad. Howard dominated with 23 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block on 8-of-11 shooting with a 7-of-11 clip from the free-throw line. Howard missed an open dunk during the fourth-quarter comeback, but he’ll be imperative off the bench going forward. Talen Horton-Tucker is coming along The Warriors had a difficult time slowing down the 20-year-old guard. Horton-Tucker made his first appearance in the third quarter but left his mark on the game. He displayed flashy dunks, one-legged fadeaways, rim penetrations bursts and more en route to a 17-point outing in 20 minutes. He didn’t play any minutes with James or Westbrook, but he’s turning heads with every passing game. So Z Nation, what did you think about the Lakers performance against the Warriors??? Lakers Fall To The Suns In Preseason | Malik Monk Continues To Improve | Melo Debuts With Lakers The Los Angeles Lakers faced the Phoenix Suns in Game 2 of the preseason but lost 117-105. The scoreline looks more respectable than the game actually was because the Suns breezed through L.A. after the first three quarters. Phoenix led 102-74, but L.A.’s bench won the fourth quarter 31-15 to cut into the deficit. LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Trevor Ariza and Dwight Howard didn’t play, and Devin Booker didn’t play for Phoenix. Carmelo Anthony and Anthony Davis, however, did make appearances, with the former making his debut in the purple and gold. It wasn’t pretty for the Lakers until Talen Horton-Tucker and Malik Monk picked up the pace towards the end of the third quarter, even though it wasn’t enough. Here are three takeaways from the game: Continuity matters With the Lakers bringing in 11 new faces for the guaranteed roster, it was logical that the players wouldn’t gel immediately. That was extremely evident against the Suns, which deployed the same starting five from the playoffs a year ago. The Suns didn’t look like it missed a beat, even with the acquisitions of JaVale McGee and Landry Shamet. Finding chemistry fast will be a key aspect for any success the Lakers hope to have, as the difference in continuity and chemistry manifested. Having LeBron James and Russell Westbrook may accelerate the process, but it still needs to happen quickly. Small-ball lineups need to rebound better The Lakers were once again out-rebounded by the opposition. Phoenix won the rebound battle 52-40, and 12 of those came on the offensive glass for the Suns; for comparison’s sake, the Lakers managed just four. Rebounding plagued the Lakers against the Brooklyn Nets, but in this game, much of it came down to the small-ball lineups. With who L.A. had out, L.A. frequently deployed lineups comprising one big and four smaller players. DeAndre Jordan grabbed seven in 20 minutes, but he missed plenty as well by ball-watching. The smaller guards also have to do better at boxing out and following up on any missed shot. Malik Monk shines again After leading the Lakers with 15 points against the Nets, Malik Monk dropped a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting (4-of-7 from deep). The shooting guard battle is headed in Monk’s favor at this point, but he still has plenty of work to do on defense. Cameron Payne and others usually had no issue blowing past Monk on dribble-penetration drives, but Monk’s scoring prowess can’t be overlooked. So Z Nation, what do you think about the Lakers performance against the Suns in game 2 of the preseason??? And how are you like Malik Monk’s performance as of late??? Lakers To Workout Kenneth Faried With One Roster Spot Open | Kenneth Faried Lakers 2021 The Los Angeles Lakers still have a few roster spots left heading into training camp later this month, and the team may be looking to fill one of them with another big man. According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, the team will be working out veteran center and unrestricted free agent Kenneth Faried this week Faried last played in the NBA during the 2018-19 season, when he averaged 10.4 points and 6.4 rebounds in 37 games split between the Houston Rockets and Brooklyn Nets. He most recently played for the Portland Trail Blazers in Las Vegas Summer League, where he averaged 5.7 points and 8.3 rebounds on 39% shooting in 18.6 minutes per game. The 6’8 small-ball center will turn 32 years old this season. Given that Faried’s stock around the league is low enough that he was out of the league last year, played in Las Vegas Summer League and is still unsigned, it is at least possible that the Lakers may be looking at him more for a camp invite or non-guaranteed contract than for an iron-clad spot on their roster. Teams can bring 20 players to training camp, and the team currently has three open spots for camp, even though they can only offer two more guaranteed contracts, one of which they reportedly want to save for the buyout market. So would the Lakers really give what is essentially their de-facto last guaranteed contract until midseason to Faried? When they already have two centers on their roster AND Anthony Davis? It’s possible, but until that happens, color me dubious. This is likely due diligence as much as anything. But if the Lakers do sign Faried, it could be taken as an indication that they very much plan to go back to their 2019-20 identity of playing Anthony Davis alongside two centers, and want one more for break-glass-in-case-of-emergency situations. That would be notable if it were to happen, but the team also could be looking for an additional body and more roster flexibility, à la Troy Daniels during their title season. Daniels didn’t make it the whole year, but waiving him allowed the team to free up a roster spot after the trade deadline that they didn’t have all year, so the Lakers could want to add a cheap insurance option that they could move on from if someone better becomes available. And if Faried (or anyone else on a similar type of deal) were to play well enough to make cutting them a source of genuine hesitation, well, that would be a good problem to have for a team with limited means to add depth at this point in the summer. So Z Nation, should the Lakers consider signing Kenneth Faried to the remaining roster spot???
