After injuring her ankle against the Atlanta Dream in last summer’s WNBA bubble season in Bradenton, Fla., Ionescu returns this year with renewed purpose. The 2020 top overall pick wants to bring a winning culture back to one of the league’s original franchises. She and the Liberty tip off that campaign — the WNBA’s 25th — Friday night against Eastern Conference rival Indiana Fever. It’s the first game for the Liberty at their new home at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Ionescu never got a chance to face the Fever last season as her professional resume included just two games before she sustained a Grade 3 ankle sprain early in the team’s third game of the 2020 season against the Dream. But she’d been waiting for this moment to announce her return. Two days before her second debut, Ionescu decided to head to her new home arena to watch the other team occupying the Brooklyn mecca, the Nets.
