Turnover (basketball)

In basketball, a turnover occurs when a team loses possession of the ball to the opposing team before a player takes a shot at their team's basket. This can result from the ball being stolen, the player making mistakes such as stepping out of bounds, illegal screen, a double dribble, having a pass intercepted, throwing the ball out of bounds, three-second violation, five-second violation, or committing an error such as traveling, a shot clock violation, palming, a backcourt violation, or committing an offensive foul.

Turnover number

Turnover number has two different meanings: In enzymology, turnover number is defined as the maximum number of chemical conversions of substrate molecules per second that a single catalytic site will execute for a given enzyme concentration [ E T ] {\displaystyle [E_{T}]} . It can be calculated from the maximum reaction rate V max {\displaystyle V_{\max }} and catalyst site concentration [ E T ] {\displaystyle [E_{T}]} as follows: k c a t = V max [ E T ] {\displaystyle k_{\mathrm {cat} }={\frac {V_{\max }}{[E_{T}]}}} (See Michaelis-Menten kinetics). For example, carbonic anhydrase has a turnover number of 400,000 to 600,000 s−1, which means that each carbonic anhydrase molecule can produce up to 600,000 molecules of product (bicarbonate ions) per second. In other chemical fields, such as organometallic catalysis, turnover number (abbreviated TON) has a different meaning: the number of moles of substrate that a mole of catalyst can convert before becoming inactivated.

Turnover-pulse hypothesis

The turnover-pulse hypothesis, formulated by paleoanthropologist Elisabeth Vrba, suggests that major changes to the climate or ecosystem often result in a period of rapid extinction and high turnover of new species across multiple different lineages. Changes may include climate change, tectonic plate shifting, and catastrophes, among other things.
