The California State Prison System is a system of prisons, fire camps, contract beds, reentry programs, and other special programs administered by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Division of Adult Institutions to incarcerate approximately 117,000 people as of April 2020. CDCR owns and operates 34 prisons throughout the state and operates 1 prison leased from a private company.

There were also 8 prisons, 23 juvenile facilities, and 211 pre-trial facilities in 2019.Prisons in Russia are administered by the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN).

The management and administration of prisons falls exclusively in the domain of the State governments, and is governed by the Prisons Act, 1894 and the Prison manuals of the respective state governments.

Prison

A prison , also known as a jail or gaol , penitentiary (American English), detention center (or centre if outside the US), correction center (American English), correctional facility, lock-up or remand center, is a facility in which inmates (or prisoners) are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state. Prisons are most commonly used within a criminal justice system: people charged with crimes may be imprisoned until their trial; those pleading or being found guilty of crimes at trial may be sentenced to a specified period of imprisonment.

Prison officer

Corrections officer is the term for a uniformed official, responsible for the supervision, safety, and security of prisoners in a prison, jail, or similar form of secure custody. They are responsible for the care, custody, and control of individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial while on remand or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a prison or jail.
