Motte-and-bailey castle

A motte-and-bailey castle is a fortification with a wooden or stone keep situated on a raised area of ground called a motte, accompanied by a walled courtyard, or bailey, surrounded by a protective ditch and palisade. Relatively easy to build with unskilled labour, but still militarily formidable, these castles were built across northern Europe from the 10th century onwards, spreading from Normandy and Anjou in France, into the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century.

MOT test
MOT test

The MOT test is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in the United Kingdom for most vehicles over three years old used on any way defined as a road in the Road Traffic Act 1988; it does not apply only to highways (or in Scotland a relevant road) but includes other places available for public use, which are not highways. In Northern Ireland the equivalent requirement applies after four years.

Mott–Bethe formula

The Mott–Bethe formula is used to calculate electron scattering form factors, f e {\displaystyle f_{e}(q,Z)} , from X-ray scattering form factors, f x ( q , Z ) {\displaystyle f_{x}(q,Z)} . Following the first Born approximation, f e ( q , Z ) = m e 2 32 π 3 ℏ 2 ϵ 0 ( Z − f x ( q , Z ) q 2 ) {\displaystyle f_{e}(q,Z)={\frac {me^{2}}{32\pi ^{3}\hbar ^{2}\epsilon _{0}}}{\Bigg (}{\frac {Z-f_{x}(q,Z)}{q^{2}}}{\Bigg )}} Here, q {\displaystyle q} is the magnitude of the scattering vector of momentum transfer cross section in reciprocal space (in units of inverse distance), Z {\displaystyle Z} the atomic number of the atom, ℏ {\displaystyle \hbar } is Planck's constant, ϵ 0 {\displaystyle \epsilon _{0}} is the vacuum permittivity, and m 0 {\displaystyle m_{0}} is the electron rest mass.
