Het tijdperk Van Aert - Van der Poel op WK veldrijden sinds 2015
De voorbije 6 jaar hebben Wout van Aert en Mathieu van der Poel de koek netjes verdeeld op het WK veldrijden. 3 keer croste Van Aert naar goud, 3 keer Van der Poel. Duik mee terug de tijd in. Tabor 2015: de prille twintigers nemen over Wout van Aert en Mathieu van der Poel zijn amper 20 jaar jong of ze de delen de lakens al uit bij de elite. Op een bevroren omloop in Tsjechië pakt Van der Poel uit met zijn handelsmerk: meteen het gaspedaal opendraaien. Zo dwingt de Nederlander Van Aert in de fout. Ook Van der Poel blijft niet foutloos. Hij verslikt zich in een balk en ziet de conurrentie weer aansluiten. Van Aert zit weer waar hij moet zitten, maar lang duurt dat niet. Na kettingproblemen en een val hinkt hij weer achterop. De jonge Belg zet zijn frustratie om in een pure power. In de laatste rechte lijn krijgt Van Aert Lars van der Haar nog te pakken, maar leider Van der Poel is al over de streep gereden. Op het podium staat Van Aerts gezicht op onweer. Zolder 2016: de twee haken in mekaar Op en rond het autocircuit van Zolder verwacht iedereen een onemanshow van Mathieu van der Poel, maar het WK kiest voor een ander scenario. Halfweg de cross rijdt Van der Poel zich vast in de Limburgse grond. Van Aert haakt in de machinerie van de Nederlander en de twee staan te voet. Van der Poel gooit de handdoek, Van Aert niet. Hij spreekt zijn V12 aan om de achtervolging in te zetten op leider Lars van der Haar. Met succes. Samen duiken ze de laatste ronde in. Van der Haar valt aan, maar op de laatste klim countert Van Aert hem. Zijn eerste wereldtitel is binnen. Van der Poel bolt pas als 5e binnen. Bieles 2017: tubes en tranen 4 jaar geleden in Luxemburg speelt de bandenkeuze een beslissende rol. Niels Albert laat zijn poulain Wout van Aert oerdegelijke, maar zware tubes opleggen. De voormalige wereldkampioen vreest voor een festival van lekke banden op de ijzige en verraderlijke ondergrond. Albert krijgt gelijk. Mathieu van der Poel mag dan wel de sterkste renner zijn, met de ene leegloper na de andere slaagt hij er niet in om zich voor de 2e keer tot wereldkampioen te kronen bij de profs. Van der Poel heeft het er moeilijk mee. Op het podium en in onze studio rollen de tranen over zijn wangen. Valkenburg 2018: 3e wereldtitel "zonder te ademen" Op de Cauberg in Valkenberg, bekend van de Amstel Gold Race, voert Wout van Aert een kabinetstuk op. Met een demonstratie van start tot aankomst snelt hij naar zijn 3e wereldtitel op een rij. "Een van mijn beste dagen op de fiets", noemt Van Aert zijn prestatie achteraf. Iets wat hij later nog zal herhalen op de weg. Geen tranen bij Mathieu van der Poel deze keer. Hij legt zich sportief neer bij de overmacht van zijn grote rivaal. "Ik ben op mijn waarde geklopt", dixit Van der Poel, die ook Michael Vanthourenhout voor zich moet dulden. Vader Adrie van der Poel reageert ietwat dubbelzinnig tijdens onze uitzending. "Wout ademt niet", zegt hij. Een dag later kadert Van der Poel senior zijn uitspraak. "Ik bedoelde dat als een groot compliment. Het is een teken dat de conditie goed zit en dat alles goed loopt." Bogense 2019: een oerschreeuw aan de finish Met een 3-1-tussenstand trekt het circus naar Denemarken, waar Mathieu van der Poel als man van het seizoen de topfavoriet is. Van der Poel moet niet alleen afrekenen met Wout van Aert, ook Toon Aerts wil een woordje meespreken. Dat doet hij ook, maar na een slipper op een schuine kant is Van der Poel een eerste keer ribbedebie. Van Aert spreekt zijn vechtlust aan, boekt een morele overwinning door Van der Poel vast te grijpen, maar gaat op dezelfde plek als Aerts in de fout. De Nederlander en de regenboogtrui zijn definitief weg. In de achtergrond moet Van Aert nog afrekenen met Aerts in de strijd voor het zilver, maar dat gebeurt allemaal in de schaduw van de Nederlandse laureaat. Zijn schreeuw aan de finish verraadt hoeveel druk er van zijn schouders valt. Dübendorf 2020: "buitenaardse" Van der Poel Mathieu van der Poel heeft in het seizoen 2019-2020 maar één cross "verloren" voor aanvang van het WK. Er is maar één topfavoriet in Zwitserland en dat bewijst de Nederlander al na een halve ronde. "Dit verhaal wordt met de pen van de eentonigheid geschreven", zeggen onze commentatoren. Een spannend WK wordt het geenszins en dat is de verdienste van Van der Poel. "Chapeau. Wat hij doet, is buitenaards", vult Sven Nys aan. Een legertje Belgen vecht voor zilver en brons, maar ze worden afgetroefd door de jonge Brit Tom Pidcock. Voor Wout van Aert wordt het zelfs een WK om snel te vergeten: hij eindigt voor het eerst niet op het podium.
