Meet The NEXT Kawhi Leonard! Popovich's Final Project...

Following a dramatically franchise-altering move.. Have the Spurs already set themselves up with the next Kawhi Leonard? And furthermore, has he been solidified as Pop’s final project as he approaches the twilight of his coaching career? Twitter ➤ @theklayallen https://twitter.com/theklayallen Instagram ➤ @basketballpoet https://instagram.com/basketballpoet Edited by: TdotJordan ➤ https://www.youtube.com/MontegaJordan Music Credits: ➤ Japan (Prod. Ty Rose) https://bit.ly/2La0jVm If the messy and unprofessional Kawhi Leonard break-up came to be what ultimately defined the great Gregg Popovich’s final years of coaching, it would be a truly disappointing ending to perhaps the most storied and decorated stretches in the history of professional sports. For over two decades, San Antonio has always fielded a competitive club. Over the past 22 seasons under Gregg Popovich, the Spurs have brought home 5 championships, while the trio of Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili stand alone as the most winningest trio in NBA history. No dynasty can last forever but in San Antonio it has always felt different. From the top down, they’ve built a culture of perpetual selflessness, dedication and loyalty. Whether you were an All-NBA superstar or a role player, in order to put on a Spurs jersey, you must first leave your ego at the door – and the results speak for themselves. Hence the shock we collectively felt as NBA fans when Kawhi decided to do what he did, and more significantly, the WAY he did what he did. The sloppy and disrespectful manner in which he handled the entire situation was something we could have never foreseen after crowning him as the prototypical Spurs star, the quintessential Tim Duncan successor, a player who seemed to embody every last one of these aforementioned traits.. Well, I guess that wasn’t entirely the case. From David Robinson to Tim Duncan to Kawhi, the Spurs have worked themselves into a position to consistently do the unthinkable in the NBA: seamlessly remain competitive as they transition from generation to generation, from one superstar to the next, without going through the dreaded and normally inevitable rebuild phase. After the Duncan-Ginobili-Parker trio had long expired, the Spurs were meant to belong to Kawhi.. At least that’s what was supposed to happen.. That’s who he was supposed to be.. But his perspective seems to have shifted drastically. And just how telling is it that today, the qualities he’s come to represent seem to have flipped into the opposite of what that dynasty was founded upon. And now with a retired Duncan, Tony in Charlotte and a 41-year old Ginobili on his last legs, Kawhi’s departure for Toronto has created a riff in the Spurs long-term plans and future. For the first time ever, the Spurs dynasty is on the brink of falling. Has the time finally come? Will their hand be forced straight into that complete rebuild they’ve managed to elude now for over two decades? Between the endless off-court drama from the Kawhi saga to his wife, Erin, passing in April, this past year has been one of the toughest for Pop to endure. After 5 championships, 3 Coach of the Year awards, 4 All-Star Appearances and 21 consecutive playoff appearances, it would truly be a tragedy if Pop’s magnificent run as the mastermind behind the Spurs dynasty came to an end at the hands of a disgruntled Kawhi rather than ending with the huge bang his greatness more than warranted. As he returns for another season, he now faces perhaps the biggest challenge of his career. But this is Pop we’re talking about, after all, and he always seems to have some tricks up his sleeve. Whenever an iteration of a Spurs squad is considered “too old” or “washed up”, they always seem to prove doubters wrong anyway and exceed expectations. I mean, just a quick glance at this past season’s team, with Kawhi missing 73 games, it wasn’t necessarily a roster packed to the brim with talent. Yet, the Spurs still managed to convincingly win 47 games in the unrelenting Western Conference. Pop’s magic tends to be that he gets the best out of any given roster and year-in-year-out, finds a way to create a great culture AND get each and every player, from stars to role players to inactive backups to even the two-way players who spend a large portion of the season away from team, to buy into the culture he’s created. He, along with a developmental staff that’s widely regarded as one of the best in the league, has had a direct impact in taking players – whether they be established stars or very raw prospects – and molding them into the best possible versions of themselves. So who is Pop's next, and perhaps final, project as an NBA coach?

Cavs Getting Swept?, Can Houston Win Game 2?, New Michael Jordan Doc | Out of Bounds
Cavs Getting Swept?, Can Houston Win Game 2?, New Michael Jordan Doc | Out of Bounds

On today's episode of #OutofBounds, sports announcer and commentator Mauro Ranallo joins Gilbert Arenas, Adam Caparell, and Pierce Simpson to discuss the Celtics beating the Cavs despite a monster game from LeBron James to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. With King James clearly giving his all — returning from a scary head shot to post a 42-point triple-double — the panel points fingers at the teammates who need to step their game up. One player who would be excused if he were underperforming is Celtics guard Marcus Smart, who revealed that his mom is undergoing chemotherapy treatments for bone marrow cancer but wants him to remain focused on basketball. Mauro — who had to do a broadcast after losing a close family member — and Gil talk about trying to perform at your best when you're enduring a personal tragedy. Looking ahead to tonight's Game 2 between Houston and Golden State, OOB asks if the Rockets can “withstand” Kevin Durant going off, as head coach Mike D'Antoni said they could after he torched them for 37 points in Game 1. Are the Rockets capable of shutting down one or more of the Dubs' other stars? Plus, the panel makes their picks for the game. Then, with the NBA Draft Lottery over and the Suns now in possession of the first overall pick, the crew debates whom Phoenix should draft at No. 1. Also, Gil explains why the NBA's new draft lottery format designed to eliminate tanking won't actually stop the league's annual race to the bottom. After ESPN Films and Netflix announced Tuesday that they will be releasing a 10-part documentary series on Michael Jordan in 2019, the guys ask if it will reveal anything we don't know about MJ or just show younger generations why he is the GOAT over LeBron and Kobe. Plus, Gil lets Mauro know why Jordan's return to play for the Wizards wasn't the typical case of an athlete being unwilling to move on from their playing career. With his own documentary, Bipolar Rock 'N' Roller, premiering next Friday, May 25, on Showtime, Mauro explains the motivation behind the project, which candidly discusses his mental health issues. Plus, Gil opens up about his battle with depression and how he learned to be himself. Finally, with philanthropic hedge fund manager and outspoken Trump critic David Tepper expected to buy the Panthers for a record-setting $2.2 billion, OOB asks if he is precisely the kind of owner the NFL needs now. Does politics even matter when it comes to the bottom-line business of NFL ownership?
