Australia’s cricket team has flown into Pakistan on their first tour of the country in nearly a quarter of a century – and into a security bubble that will envelop them throughout their six-week stay. Pakistan have struggled to attract visiting sides since a fatal terror attack on the visiting Sri Lanka team’s bus in 2009. Australia pulled out of a tour five years earlier after a suicide blast at a Lahore church. They last played in Pakistan in 1998, winning a three-Test series 1-0 and blanking the hosts in the three one-day internationals. “They have landed,” a Pakistani security official said while Australia batsman Steve Smith posted a picture on Twitter saying the team had arrived. Australia will play three Tests, three one-day internationals, and one Twenty20 match before leaving on April 6. Having been forced to play their home games abroad – mainly in the United Arab Emirates – Pakistan appeared to have reassured international cricket authorities last year, with both New Zealand and England scheduled to tour. But the Black Caps hastily departed in September just minutes before their first match was due to start, citing security fears. England postponed tours by their men’s and women’s teams soon after. The decisions incensed Pakistan cricket authorities, who felt they had done everything possible to ensure safety and security. They say they are again leaving nothing to chance, with nearly 4,000 police and military personnel guarding the team hotel in Islamabad and the cricket stadium in the nearby garrison city of Rawalpindi. The Australian men's cricket team has landed in Pakistan for the all-format series, scheduled to start from March 4. According to details, the Aussies reached Islamabad during the wee hours of Sunday morning via a special plane and were escorted to their hotel from the airport under tight security. After spending a day in isolation, the Kangaroos will be able to train from Monday. Meanwhile, Australia's Test captain Pat Cummins will do an on-arrival virtual presser at 10.00 a.m. It must be noted that the Australian squad is in Pakistan after a gap of 24 years. The last time they toured the country was back in 1998 under the leadership of Mark Taylor. three Tests, three ODIs and a T20I from March 4 to April 5. The hidden reason Olympic sledding is so dangerous
The hidden reason Olympic sledding is so dangerous

“Sled head” is about more than just crashes. Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO In recent years, the sliding community — made up of skeleton, bobsleigh, and luge athletes — has experienced a spate of brain injury-related tragedy. At first glance, the reason why seems obvious: Sleds regularly reach speeds that top 90 miles per hour, and crashes are unfortunately very common. But there is growing research that shows it might be the act of sledding itself that is the main driver of brain injury. With every run, athletes are exposed to immense force and vibration, causing micro-concussions that can ultimately add up to major damage. Those concussions are mild enough that they can go undiagnosed. But among sledding athletes the symptoms that indicate a micro-concussion — headaches, dizziness, etc. — are so common they have a special nickname, “sled head.” There’s a lot science still doesn’t know about sled head and the brain in general. But from what we can tell, it’s pretty clear that sliding sports put the brain health of athletes at risk. Further reading: When researching this piece, I spoke with the German skeleton team’s coach, Mark Wood. He’s working with Christina and Peter to push for research and regulation that might protect sliding athletes in the future. He wrote a great essay sharing his perspective on the sport and its dangers here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/head-first-safe-the-sport-skeleton-mark-wood-mbe/ Peter, Christina, Mark and neuropsychologist Aliyah Snyder are currently developing a survey surrounding sliding athlete's concussion and injury histories. It's not yet available, but if you’re a current or former sliding athlete looking to find out more, email asnyder@mednet.UCLA.edu For a review of the literature on sled head see: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fneur.2018.00772/full Matthew Futterman at the New York Times is one of the only reporters writing extensively on sled head.
