While Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton engaged in a fierce on-track rivalry last season, most of the off-track drama was provided by their respective team principals Christian Horner and Toto Wolff which included quite a few verbal jibes. Wolff has now looked back at this rivalry while speaking to Formula 1 Magazine Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxHoUKxmAZbAue_BJC6JKEEIvv8PsnMV_0 0:00 - Why Toto Wolff “Really” Regrets Verbal Spats With Christian Horner 1:10 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Why Toto Wolff “Really” Regrets Verbal Spats With Christian Horner Wolff began by pointing out how things got really personal between the two “I really regret it. I always try to stay professional, approach things professionally. However, at some point it became very personal between the two of us” He then looked at what he felt was the peak of this rivalry “At one point [following the flexi-wings controversy] he said that I should keep my mouth shut. Then I responded by saying he was a windbag and talked too much for the cameras” He signed off by explaining why he shouldn’t have made such statements “I shouldn’t have said that because it’s a professional relationship and you know that even your worst enemy has a best friend” “So you have to respect that person, even if you fight a hard duel” Fast Feed Mike Elliott, technical director of Mercedes, feels that “the overall performance of the new cars probably won’t be much different from the old cars” [Mercedes AMG F1] “The cars will look very different. They will perform quite differently and that is going to be interesting to watch” “All of this year’s cars will look fairly similar [to each other]. The differences will all be subtle changes in the aerodynamic shapes particularly underneath the car” Former F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne has stated that “you didn’t see everything that happened behind the scenes, all the politics” during his time in F1 at McLaren [Dernière Heure] “It’s not easy to drive at your best when you know that the team is negotiating with other drivers behind your back” Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko feels that “[Carlos] Sainz was unlucky to debut at the same time as [Max] Verstappen” [Autorevue] “He was immediately fast and good. We already saw in the first tests at Silverstone. He was as fast as Verstappen” “Sainz certainly belongs among the top drivers. He has proven that” Alpine’s Fernando Alonso has divulged that “last year when [he] was testing the old Renault on [his] comeback to the sport, [he shared] a couple of days with [Guanyu] Zhou in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.” [F1i] “It’s good for Formula 1 in general, I think, [and] for China, for Zhou” “We are all looking forward to race with him, and [to] welcome him in the best way possible” In a note sent to the media on Monday, Mercedes moved to rubbish the report published over the weekend that stated that the Brackley squad’s chassis had failed a side-impact test [F1i] Red Bull team principal Christian Horner feels that sprint qualifying “wasn’t perfect but if you don’t try something then you don’t know” [WION] “I think there are things that could be done to make it more exciting, to make it more interesting” “But it’s getting quite late now and we’re going to need to have a decision pretty shortly” Did you enjoy the bickering between Toto Wolff and Christian Horner last year?
Lewis Hamilton will have a new teammate in George Russell next year. This has sparked plenty of debate in recent times on how the two will co-exist. Hamilton has now revealed to Autosport how he would like his future teammate to progress alongside him Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugkxld70l9IQaaGqLVl7LITAAqdjtAEqwl-s 0:00 - Lewis Hamilton Reveals How He Wants To Influence George Russell At Mercedes 1:26 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Lewis Hamilton Reveals How He Wants To Influence George Russell At Mercedes Lewis began by speaking about mutual respect “I think you saw that George is hugely respectful. He's a super-talented young man and I think there’s a huge amount of respect coming in already. There’s just a nice balance at the moment” He then accepted that Russell will want to win “He will want to be fast. He’ll want to win, and all those things you do when you’re new somewhere. I remember when I was competing against Alonso, of course I wanted to beat him in the first race” He further elaborated why he expects this mentality from George “So I appreciate and expect George to have that mentality, otherwise he’s not a winner, you know? I expect him to have that mentality” He then explained why he wants Russell to succeed “I want to see him to succeed. There comes a point where I don’t continue in this sport. He is my teammate and he will be the next Briton I want to see win a world championship” He signed off by expressing his desire to have a positive influence on George “So I really hope that as we go into battle and I want to win on the track, that I can have a positive influence on how he behaves within the team” Fast Feed McLaren’s Lando Norris is “over it. Of course, when people remind me of it, it’s still very disappointing because it was that first opportunity to win a race in F1” referring to the race in Sochi [BBC] “We made the wrong decision but I wouldn’t say I regret anything I did from my side. I did what I thought was best at the time” “I never feel I can say it’s the team’s fault, but… I could have advised them better but if you just think of it in simple terms of me and Lewis had the same mentality of what we thought was best, and that was to stay on track” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has stated that “fighting for two world championships is exactly what we worked hard for” [Red Bull Racing] “We’re going into the last few races and it’s very exciting. In previous years we would have bitten your arm off to be in this position at this point in the championship” Retired F1 driver turned pundit Martin Brundle has suggested that “if you look at laps led, races won so far and all of that, and I think [Max Verstappen's] been a little bit more unlucky with the tyre in Baku, the result of the contact in Silverstone, being skittled in Hungary” [Autosport] “Then Lewis got a little bit lucky [like] with his shunt in Imola. But it kind of feels like, season long, Max has had the best season so far, if you look at the numbers” “I think either of them deserve it, but it just feels as if it’s been Max’s to lose, through bad luck or bad judgment or whatever” Retired F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has stated that “there were rumours that Red Bull were planning an engine change. Funnily enough, I just got a phone call: There will be no new engine this weekend” [Sky Germany] “You want to take advantage of the lead you have and not have five places taken away. You may still react after the weekend. That’s the plan at the moment” Reigning Formula E World Champion Nyck de Vries feels that “it’s very good to stay involved with a team like Mercedes and function in it. So definitely [he would like to continue as their reserve driver]” [GP Blog] If Max Verstappen does need a new engine where should he take it?
🔔 Join our Discord to be a part of the F1 Watchalong in Abu Dhabi! https://bit.ly/3lkO5gJ There are 8 points between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton heading into the final 2 races - things are tight, and things are exciting. So let’s have a look at who the momentum is with, and who I think will win. But first, let us know in the comments who you think will take the driver’s championship - and why. Both Hamilton and Verstappen are driving incredibly well. The stats speak for themselves, 12 times this year they’ve been 1-2. They’ve both destroyed their teammates - Verstappen’s 9 wins to Perez’s 1. Hamilton’s 6 wins to Bottas’ 1. In fact, the times they’ve not been 1-2, either or both had retired, had penalties or there’s been something unusual going on. In Monaco Hamilton was a bit steady. Azerbaijan, Verstappen got a puncture. In Austria, Hamilton had some floor damage. At Silverstone they both absolutely sent it - and we all know what happened. Hungary, Max was taken out by Bottas, AND Lewis was on inters all by himself (lol). Spa wasn’t really a race. At Monza, Verstappen absolutely sent it again - and tried to squash Hamilton. And at Turkey, Hamilton had a 10 place grid penalty. We’ve seen some very hard racing this season between the two. I think this goes down as a classic year - no matter who’s side you sit on. Mercedes had a pretty good weekend in Turkey despite the Istanbul Park being touted as one of those tracks that would favor Red Bull. Mercedes have been able to either match or outpace Red Bull in the last few races and Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has a theory regarding this as he has now explained to Sport 1 Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgxCD8XFFVj7cVrcgIV4AaABCQ 0:00 - Helmut Marko Alleges Something Weird At Mercedes 1:17 - Fast Feed I'm your host Tyler and first up on Formula World: Helmut Marko Alleges Something Weird At Mercedes Marko began by pointing out how Hamilton had the pace to even win the Turkish GP “Had he got past there faster, he might even have won the race. Because if he had made it behind Bottas, there would have been a change of place for sure” Red Bull had recently appealed to the FIA regarding a supposed trick Mercedes were using in their power unit. Even though the appeal was dismissed Marko feels that something unusual has been happening “I don't think Mercedes did anything illegal. But something has been weird since Silverstone. So, it is now up to us to research why they are suddenly so fast” He summed up his words by stating that if they cannot figure out why Mercedes are so fast now, Red Bull could be in trouble “Is it just the engine or something else? We now have to work day and night to uncover its secret and then counter it. As quickly as possible. It is up to us. If the differences in performance remains the same as in Istanbul, we will have a problem” Fast Feed Alpine’s executive director Marcin Budkowski thinks that they “could and should have put both cars into Q3, if not for Esteban’s traffic issues in Q3 [in Turkey]” [Racer] “In these conditions we seem to have performed reasonably well. It’s a circuit that would suit us. I think Austin should as well”, he added “It’s frustrating to qualify so well and to have such a good pace on Friday and Saturday and only end up with one point and lose ground to our competitors”, he concluded Formula 2 championship leader Oscar Piastri feels that his “chances of being in F1 next year are extremely low, I think basically none” [Oscar Piastri Website] “I know [Guanyu] Zhou has been very heavily linked to that seat [at Alfa Roneo] and also [Antonio] Giovinazzi is there at the moment”, he expanded “I don’t think I’m going to be in that seat at all, I think it is the only opportunity for next year. I’d be happily surprised if it was me in that seat for next year” FIA race director Michael Masi feels that “every driver is entitled to their views and comments, either internally or to the media” referring to Alpine’s Fernando Alonso alleging that the stewards are biased towards certain drivers based on nationality [Motorsport] “The rules are applied equally for everyone. We judge each and every incident, looking at the actual incident and what occurs”, he added “We are very fortunate that we have a very good group of stewards throughout the year. And no, I can tell you that does not place any additional pressure whatsoever on them”, he reiterated Alpine’s Fernando Alonso is of the opinion that George Russell and Max Verstappen “are the two drivers who are special, who make the difference and who get more [than] the actual performance of their cars” [F1 Insider] “The rest of the drivers only get the results that match the performance of their cars”, he elaborated “Lewis and Max are doing great in their teams. So, there's no clear answer to [who has the advantage]”, he summed up Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had “no problem at all with tough conversations on the radio” with Hamilton in Turkey [Mirror] Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, added that “don't ever expect me to be all polite and calm on the radio when I'm racing” “We are all very passionate and in the heat of the moment that passion can come out, as it does for all drivers”, he expanded "My heart and spirit are out there on the track, it's the fire in me that's got me this far but any angst is quickly forgotten and we talked it through, already looking ahead to the next race” Did Lewis Hamilton go overboard with his radio messages in Turkey?
