Providence College Friars explode in win over Villanova, 2:14.18
Biggest win of the season for Ed Cooley & the Friars before a deliriously happy, sold-out crowd at Dunkin Donuts Center, topping 3rd ranked Villanova, 76-71. PC needed a win like this to keep its NCAA hopes alive - & they got it - improving to 17-9 overall. Via Projo’s Kevin McNamara PROVIDENCE – Four days after their worst loss of the season, the Providence Friars found a way to come up with their biggest victory. Providence controlled the pace all night and then held off the expected charge from No. 3 Villanova to post a 76-71 win that brought the Friar crowd onto the floor in celebration. The win is the first for the Friars at home over a top five ranked team since an upset of No. 1 Pittsburgh in 2009. This was a win the Friars (17-9, 8-5) badly needed after dropping a home game to DePaul in ugly fashion last Saturday. The Friars now own wins over Villanova and Xavier, two teams currently pegged to receive one or two seeds in the NCAA Tournament. “Coming off the way we played over the weekend,” Cooley said, “and the turn-around emotionally that we just went through. For our players to respond the way they did, it’s almost like a Dad. You see your kids and they’re hurting. You don’t want to be negative, you pick `em up and you tell them how proud you are because now today is a proud moment.” Five Friars scored in double figures with Kyron Cartwright leading the way with 17 points. Rodney Bullock and Alpha Diallo added 14 and Jalen Lindsey logged all 40 minutes and scored 13 points. Villanova (23-3, 10-3) lost for the second time in three games. Jalen Brunson struggled all night, turning the ball over seven times and fouling out with 68 seconds left. The potential national Player of the Year finished with 14 points and five assists. Mikal Bridges fouled out with 1:12 left after posting 19 points and seven boards. Villanova shot 3-of-30 from the 3-point line and is now 17-of-71 from downtown over the last three games. The Wildcats were also plagued by 19 turnovers. “It’s body-on-body when you play Villanova,” Cooley said. “They’re so talented but playing on the road is tough. I don’t care who you’re playing. You come into an environment like this, it’s tough.” The Pink Out sellout crowd of 12,887 wouldn’t let their troops fade whenever Villanova looked ready to pounce. The first half played out well for the Friars despite offensive mistakes that piled up quickly. The home team would end the opening half up 27-23 despite shooting 31 percent from the floor and not scoring for just over six minutes. PC started 1-of-10 from the 3-point line and finished 3-of-14 from downtown in the half. The good news was Villanova’s offense was slightly worse. While the Cats shot 39 percent, they didn’t make one of their seven 3-point tries and couldn’t manage a field goal over the final 5:17 of the half. That opened the door for the Friars to score eight of the final 10 points and enter the locker room on a high. Both offenses settled down and produced better in the second half. The catalyst for the Friars was Cartwright as he banged in a 3-pointer, hit a tough jumper and then made a 27-footer for a personal 8-0 run to give PC a 39-31 lead. He scored again to make it 41-34 but then was called for a soft push-off foul to pick up his fourth foul with 14:09 to play. Cooley went to Maliek White at the point but Cartwright never really left the flow of the game. PC led 49-39 with 11:27 left and was still up by a comfortable 65-56 with 4:29 left after a great driving layup to the rack by White. Brunson picked up his fourth foul at the 3:34 mark while he was losing the ball for a sixth time. Diallo hit two free throws for a 69-62 lead with 1:12 left but then things got a little crazy. First Brunson fouled out with 1:08 left and then Lindsey made two free throws to make the Friars a perfect 11-for-11 in the half and a 71-64 lead with 45 seconds left. But Cartwright opened the door ever so slightly when he went 1-of-2 from the stripe on three straight trips to the line. “It was a great crowd tonight and we appreciate that a lot,” Diallo said. “I was just basically in awe of the fans and how they gave us so much energy.”

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl UCF vs Auburn Recap Highlights
ATLANTA -- McKenzie Milton threw two touchdown passes and ran for 116 yards with another touchdown, leading No. 10 UCF to a 34-27 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl win over No. 7 Auburn on Monday that capped the Knights' perfect season. UCF led 34-20 before having to stop a late Auburn comeback. Antwan Collier's interception in the end zone with 24 seconds remaining clinched the win. After Auburn took a 20-13 lead in the third quarter on a 4-yard run by Kerryon Johnson, Milton threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Otis Anderson to tie the game. Milton, under pressure, zipped an 8-yard scoring pass to Dredrick Snelson early in the fourth to give the Knights the lead. Chequan Burkett's 45-yard interception return for a touchdown pushed the lead to 14 points. UCF (13-0) won in its final game with coach Scott Frost, who stayed with the team through the bowl game after accepting an offer to become the new coach at Nebraska, his alma mater. The Knights thought they deserved a higher ranking after winning the American Athletic Conference and leading the nation in scoring, and they made a strong statement by beating Auburn (10-4). The Knights sacked Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham six times. Auburn had only one sack. UCF led 13-6 at halftime despite behind held under 14 points at the break for the first time this season. With 6:58 remaining, Auburn's Derrick Brown blocked a 25-yard field goal by Matthew Wright that would have given UCF a 10-point lead. Auburn couldn't take advantage of the opportunity to tie the game. After the interception return by Burkett gave UCF a 34-20 lead, Auburn's Eli Stove had a 7-yard scoring run with about four minutes remaining. By that time, many Auburn fans in the sellout crowd of 71,109 already had left the stadium. With 2:18 remaining, UCF's Matthew Wright missed a 38-yard field goal, giving the Tigers an opening for their last-gasp drive, which ended with the interception. The Knights, who lead the nation with 49.4 points per game, continued their streak of scoring more than 30 points in every game this season. The Knights passed every test, including on the line of scrimmage, as they proved they could match speed and strength with the Tigers. Milton overcame a slow start after completing only 3 of 17 passes for 30 yards in the first half. He completed 16 of 35 passes for 242 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Tigers couldn't maintain momentum after opening the second half with two touchdowns for a 20-13 lead. Auburn insisted motivation would not be a problem after the crushing loss in the SEC championship game, but the Tigers had no answer when the Knights regained momentum. Stidham completed 28 of 43 passes for 331 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Knights will begin a new era with coach Josh Heupel, the former Missouri offensive coordinator.

STANFORD — Getting the chance to face North Carolina at Maples Pavilion for the first time since Michael Jordan’s days was not enough for Stanford.Not nearly enough, not after a 96-72 defeat.“To lose a game by that much, we’re just disappointed right now,” said Cardinal forward Reid Travis after falling to the No.9 Tar Heels on Monday night.“We came into the game with the mindset we wanted to knock them off.” The defending national champions were far too good for the Cardinal (3-2), but coach Jerod Haase hopes his players benefit from the model they saw.“We will learn examples of championship habits and championship traits.They have such a fantastic program,” said Haase, who was part of that program for six years as an assistant to Roy Williams, his college coach at Kansas.Stanford announced a sellout crowd for the occasion, but perhaps half of the fans were decked out in Carolina powder blue.It did not go unnoticed by Travis, who led his team with 21 points.“It puts a chip on my shoulder,” he said.“I bought the guys together before the game and said, ‘Take a look at all the blue in the gym.’That kind of lights us up.” Haase, in his second season, is unapologetic about saying he wants Stanford fans to someday feel that level of passion.“Having Carolina in the building is a special deal, to have a crowd that’s excited,” he said.“I wish we put together a better effort so the fans who came out will be more inclined to come back.“While it’s not going to happen overnight, we’re going to build this thing into a monster.” The Tar Heels (3-0) were the monsters on Monday night, especially guards Kenny Williams and Joel Berry II.Williams, who totaled 20 points in UNC’s first two games, scored that many in the first 10 minutes, including six 3-pointers, to pocket a career-high.He took just one shot in the second half and finished with 20.“I thought Kenny was absolutely sensational,” his coach said.“The best thing about it is he wasn’t not selfish for one minute.I can’t say enough for what I thought he did for us.” Said Kenny Williams, “When I first went to the bench I told the guys, `Man, I’m just throwing it up there and it’s going in.’“ Stanford (3-2) was impressed, but unhappy with its defensive work on the perimeter.“It was a defensive lapse.He shouldn’t be able to get those looks,” said Stanford freshman guard Isaac White, who scored a season-high 20 points.Berry, the most outstanding player in last year’s Final Four, did not play in Carolina’s season opener after breaking his hand by punching a wall when he lost a video game.He shot 1 for 11 in the second game, but came alive to score 29 against the Cardinal, 18 in the first half.“That is a concern that we’re going to need to defend the 3-point line better,” Haase said after UNC made 11 of 26 from deep.That wasn’t Stanford’s only shortcoming.The Cardinal missed 11 of its first 18 free throws and turned the ball over 19 times.“Clearly, there’s room for growth,” Haase said.“I do believe the experienc
