Into the Mehtaverse: Braden Birch joins New Jersey Devils Front Office as Assistant GM + Mock Drafts
Zach Berman opened the episode by announcing that New Jersey Devils General Manager Sunny Mehta made his first major hire of the offseason, bringing in Braden Birch as Assistant General Manager and as General Manager of the Utica Comets, the Devils’ AHL affiliate. This move marks the beginning of Mehta’s efforts to strengthen the Devils’ front office, starting by recruiting talent from his previous organization, the Florida Panthers, where Birch played a pivotal role in their recent Stanley Cup successes. In detailing Birch’s background, Zach Berman highlighted his 12-year tenure with the Panthers, most recently as Director of Hockey Operations and salary cap management. Birch's experience includes significant involvement in contract negotiations for key players and maintaining Florida’s excellent salary cap health, something the Devils have struggled with in recent years. His hockey roots include playing professionally and earning a master’s degree in sport management, further underscoring his blend of on-ice and management expertise. Zach Berman provided examples of Birch’s impact in Florida, referencing his hand in savvy contracts and cap management for top players like Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Sergei Bobrovsky, and Sam Reinhart. He also noted Florida’s ability to replace key departures internally and find valuable contributors through their farm system or waivers, contrasting this with New Jersey’s struggles to develop homegrown talent or depth. The hire of Birch is positioned as Mehta’s commitment to instilling a more proactive, organized, and effective approach to team building in New Jersey. To conclude, Zach Berman speculated about future front office moves, suggesting that Bryan McCabe could be another addition if not intercepted by the Maple Leafs, and addressed the current uncertainty regarding other Devils executives. He emphasized that Birch’s arrival should significantly improve the Devils’ farm system—considered among the league’s weakest—and that player development is critical to reducing reliance on expensive acquisitions. The episode closed with the assertion that Mehta’s moves signal an exciting, less predictable era for the Devils, promising ongoing updates and further discussion of mock drafts and organizational changes. “Want to See an Upset”and Steve Kerr Admits He’s Rooting Against OKC as SGA and Co. Look to Emulate
Steve Kerr says he’s rooting for an upset against the Oklahoma City Thunder as Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander and Co. try to replicate the Warriors’ dynasty. The Thunder have dominated for two straight seasons, with a 68–14 record and +12.8 Net Rating in 2024–25, then 64–18 and +11.1 Net Rating in 2025–26, leading the West and allowing 107.9 PPG (second-best). Kerr told ESPN that, as a sports fan, when a team dominates too much you want to see an upset, recalling the Warriors’ Finals narratives and his own experiences. The piece compares OKC’s run to a dynasty on par with Michael Jordan’s Bulls and Kerr’s Warriors, noting they’ve posted 80%+ win rates over two seasons, though Warriors still have an edge in longevity and titles. Kerr, a 1996–1998 Bulls member, understands dominance and hopes an upset might crack OKC’s winning formula. Like 👍 Subscribe 🔔 and stay informed. Visit NHENews.COM for more top headlines.
How The Celtics Built Their CORE
The Blueprint: From Assets to Banner 18 The Celtics' current starting five all have direct or indirect roots in the assets acquired from Brooklyn. The Foundational Duo (Brown & Tatum): Jaylen Brown: Drafted #3 overall in 2016 using a Brooklyn pick. He eventually became the 2024 NBA Finals MVP. Jayson Tatum: Acquired after Boston won the 2017 Draft Lottery via a Brooklyn pick swap. They traded down from #1 to #3 to select Tatum, who became an All-NBA First Team cornerstone. The Trade Tree Expansion (Holiday, Porziņģis, White): Jrue Holiday: Boston acquired Holiday in 2023 by trading Robert Williams III, who was drafted with the final 2018 Brooklyn pick. Kristaps Porziņģis: Acquired in a three-team deal involving Marcus Smart. While Smart was drafted in 2014, his selection was made possible because the Celtics could prioritize guard depth knowing their future wing positions were secured by upcoming Brooklyn assets. Derrick White: Traded for in 2022 using a package that included Romeo Langford (drafted with a pick from the Kyrie Irving trade, who himself was originally acquired using a Brooklyn asset). Why It Worked While the Nets pursued a short-term "win-now" window with aging stars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, the Celtics used the unprotected picks to bypass a traditional "bottom-out" rebuild. By the time the Nets' veterans left just two years later, Brooklyn was at the bottom of the league, and their top-tier lottery picks were flowing directly to a resurgent Boston team.
