Fußball bringt Menschen zusammen, heißt es. Doch die Gesellschaft zu einen, ist nicht das Ziel der Nationalsozialisten. Im NS-Regime werden Juden, Oppositionelle und andere Minderheiten gezielt ausgegrenzt und verfolgt. Als die Nazis im Frühjahr 1933 an die Macht kommen, hat das auch Auswirkungen auf den Fußball: Im Zuge der Gleichschaltung räumen Hitler und seine Anhänger alle Strukturen aus dem Weg, die ihnen nicht passen. Den deutschen Fußball nutzen sie für ihre Propaganda. Aber viele Vereine handeln auch in vorauseilendem Gehorsam: Bereits im April 1933 erklären sich mehrere Vereine „freudig und entschieden“ zur Hilfe bei der „Entfernung der Juden aus den Sportvereinen“ bereit. Hunderte Mitglieder dürfen aufgrund ihrer Religion oder Abstammung nun nicht mehr Fußball spielen, Funktionäre wie der Vereinsvorstand des FC Bayern München, Kurt Landauer, müssen ihre Ämter aufgeben. Jüdische Sportler werden deportiert und ermordet. Nennenswerten Widerstand scheint es innerhalb der Vereine oder des DFB, dem Deutschen Fußballbund, kaum zu geben. Fußballstadien werden zu Plätzen der nationalsozialistischen Ideologie: Überall hängen Hakenkreuzflaggen, die Teams machen vor dem Anpfiff den Hitlergruß. Selbst während des Krieges läuft der Sportbetrieb lange fast unverändert weiter. Coach Tomlin says it was never the intent but describes the addition as a win for the organization to have Flores apart of the coaching regime. Ryan talks about some of his former Steeler Teammates and asks the specifically noting that this will be the first time in 15 seasons that Tomlin has coached the Steelers he has always had Big Ben at the helm to run his offense and how the team will move forward. In a lighter moment, Channing asks about the infamous Jacoby Jones return interference which cost Mike T a 100K fine in 2013 as we get the play by play of what really happened that day. Admiring the legacy Tomlin has formed, Fred, Channing and Ryan all share something special they take from their conversation and the mutual respect they have for his impact on the game.
